  1. I've not noticed any local charges when transferring money in, but I always tick the 'all charges to sender' box on my sending bank.

Bank charges in Thailand are very reasonable anyway, even if they charge it will be a few hundred Baht.

Whenever I feel like it I go to Kasikorn and drop a check into my savings account.I really don't care that it takes a month to clear. They charge US $10.00 for the service so I write bigger checks(same charge). This is a great way to do it and you get a higher exchange rate so you get your $10.00 back. This is not for cheap Charlies on a budget.I also have an American Express Gold card and can cash a check(Bangkok Bank) for $2500.00 every 21 days if I want. That amounts to all the money a frugal person can ever want.Bangkok Bank charges 200 Baht and you get it back on the extra exchange rate.

SO what is your problem????? :D:D:D:D:D:D:):D:D:D

  2. My thoughts. I live in Thailand, l am English and have traveled all over the USA and thought it great, in fact if money was no object l would live in your country. BUT, it depends what YOU want from life, what are you looking for, why with all those states of America, totally different climates and way of life do you want to go else where. ?

Yes I retired in Thailand,it is all about your own standard of living, isn't it?I spent my first 46 years in the states and then was able to wake up.Keep the states, high taxes, crime, too many rules and regulations and too many American women. Need I say more?? :):D:D:D

  3. Interesting question. My wild guess would be no, because the bride's family wouldn't be expecting it. I think some families would even be insulted by it, unless it was presented as helping to pay for the wedding. But, I would love to hear from people who have firsthand experience or knowledge. :D

No sin sod but Farang wives are HIGH maintenance. You pay one way or another, but you pay. :):D:D:D

  4. This is for Thai immigration.Since the 90 day check in was so popular at the one stop, may I offer a suggestion?I am truly sorry that your staff had to work harder.May I offer a suggestion?I like many ex-pats are very disappointed with this convenient 90 day check in being cancelled. You are even moving me for the first time to check in by mail.I have a suggestion, set up a location near the center of Bangkok and charge 1,2 ,3 etc hundred baht to use it and you will make the ex-pats happy and make a lot of money too. Or add a person at the one stop to handle the business.I am truly sorry that your staff at the one stop had to work harder, aren't they there to work?????? :):D:D:D:D:D:D

  5. P.S. Missing in my collection is the original Nationality Act of B.E. 2508 (1965) without amendments. If anybody has it, in Thai and/or English, I would appreciate receiving a copy by PM.

I would also like a copy, if any one has it. Maestro, you might be interested in the attached presentation in Thai which shows in bullet points what was changed in all the Nationality Acts and amendments from the year dot. I think I found it on the website of the Local Administration Dept which is responsible among other things for district offices.

Will they revoke Thaksin's passport? :):D:D

  6. There has been hundreds of these threads and it always turns into a bitching contest of how much richer people ar nd how the <deleted> could some poor peasant live on a mere 200,000 bht, just spend what you think is right and dont worry what the Jones's next door are doing.

    wow 125,000 for rent

    that is ridiculous

:):D Only if you don't have it. :D

  7. This is actually a topic that concerns me when seeing young expats in Thailand. And by young, I mean under 40. Unless you've already made a bundle and are simply enjoying life here, then you are squandering your most productive earning years. Let's face it, if you've come to Thailand with little to no net worth, you're going to be in trouble later in life. It's rare to see a working expat who's making enough to actually save for the future (unless you're working for a foreign company/govt). And since no job will qualify you for a pension, you're pretty much on your own to build a nestegg of some sort. It's rather foolish to be working here at age 28 when you can be working in the west doing the same job for probably 10 times the pay. Maybe some of these young guys don't look past tomorrow, but I'd never come here to live unless I was already financially sound. A no-brainer, in my mind. Foreigners don't become rich in Thailand unless they bring it with them!

I aqree 100%,the reason for my post.I retired at 46 and am set for life. :):D:D:D:D

This is a very intrusive question and feel free to ignore. But can i ask ball park figure of your retirement income per month ? I m thinking about early retirement but am not sure what sort of figure to aim for. I have one friend who recently retired at 45 and his retirement plan consists of rental income from one property in Bangkok at 30,000 baht per month. Seems very risky and impossible for me to do, but hes happy.

My retirement(pension) is 120,000 baht a month, investments another 120,000 baht a month,I can live on one or the other.I never spend my monthly income no matter how hard I try=====PARADISE.

  9. You sound like a big looser yourself, why spend money that you can avoid to spend. To save it is better so you can plan your future. If you spend all your money like there is no tomorrow and don't care about rising prices then that doesn't sound really smart.

Looks more that your jealous some people can stay here and you can't. I make double (or more) of what i spend but i still don't like the low euro or rising prices. Not liking price hikes does not mean you can't afford it here.

I am retired in style. :):D:D:D:D:D

Ah then your a wrinkled old man who cant stand it that the teachers (who are younger and better looking) don't have to pay for their gf and now you start a moan on Thaivisa ? (this is more a joke then a flame just put it here to be sure internet is lousy at conveying the right emotion)

But even if you have loads of money surely you would not like all those price hikes ?.

Teachers shouldn't be playing with the students, and should be fired. :D:D:cheesy:

  11.  To all you ex pats living here, especially the younger ones. All I read is complaining about costs, visa runs etc.If you have problems why are you here?Maybe you should start thinking about your future.Maybe you should consider returning to your country and working for a retirement in style.

  12. Thailand might be able to "eliminate" rabies from the general Domestic Dog population, but the disease will NEVER be eliminated from the country. Rabies is hosted by and affects mammals. Species members of the orders Carnivora (Carnivores) and Chiroptera (bats) are the main hosts/reservoirs for rabies. Primate species can also host the disease. Rabies will continue to be harboured by native Thai species of mammals such as the wild dog species (spp.) (Dholes and Golden Jackals), civet spp., badger spp., mongoose spp., linsang spp., marten spp., ferret-badger spp., otter spp., Binturong, the eight native cat species, primate species, and the many bats species. You get the point. Even if the disease is eliminated in the Domestic Dog population, the disease will contuinue to infect some of these dogs in the future due to infection from all the other native host species found within the Thai borders. Also, there are very feral Domestic Dogs that live in remote wild areas. IMHO, these individuals will not be able to be captured, killed, given vaccinations, etc. so there will still be Domestic Dog hosts existing in remote areas. But, yeah, the general population of Domestic Dogs in LOS could be "rabies-free" if there was a very good, lengthy, concerted effort to eliminate the disease. Good luck with that. :)

How are they going to get all the Soi dogs? :D:D:D:D

  13. I don't see what there is to debate, if the origins of the money can be traced back to before Thaksin was PM then the state has no right to confriscate it. It has nothing to do with the case against Thaksin. Also she should be entitled to the interest that she would have earned during the time that her money has been frozen.

It was a conspiracy to releve the Thai people of their money.Take it all and give it back to the people, and while you are at it,get all the crooks. :):D:D:D

  14. Every time I see "Thai'French Beef" I have to put in my 2 cents worth of opinion. I live in SH, and have been to the source, purchased the offerings and consumed the products. Bottom line, nothing, and I do mean , nothing, special about this producer of Charlois beef, slaughter house, or their products. It's just the usual, skinny, poor diet crappy beef you get everywhere else. For example, the ribeyes are sold tail on with no fat trimming what so ever. that gives you less tan 25 percent meat resulting in a true cost of around 2000 baht a kilo. In addition, it is fresh, I mean fresh, killed today or yesterday and zero aged. Wet, mushy, and no taste. The only decent buy is the sirloin which I grind up into hamburger and serve bacon wrapped for flavor. If , what you see in KK is the "real thing", it is of no consequence what so ever. Buy Makro, it';s just as crappy and a lot cheaper.

I buy the Thai french in Bangkok at the Emporium and Villa markets,it is the best in Thailand.I assume you bought copies. If you want cheap go water buffalo. :):D:D:D

  15. Simple observation.

Most of the expats are old, and refuse to change/adapt; They refuse to learn the language, the culture , the landscape, etc... Close down the bars for a few weeks, and they will be leaving by the loads. Why do you think every other posts on here is about Sin sod, or in some form of fashion bashing thais i.e why don't they or why do they. Here is a question, why not stop and ask and individual on the street, that way you can attempt to interact other than sitting behind a lap top all day.

I agree with the OP, it's overpriced; If you do not know the difference then you really need to get out and about!

Thus the reason I call Sukhumvit the "Suck"

I could go on , and on , but really what would be the point : )

    :D

I don't know, maybe you can't afford to live on Sukhumvit, but yes it's somewhat overpriced but as Ts post makes very clear, it's also very convenient for nearly everything.

Also, a lot of people earn a living working on laptops thus enabling themselves the income to live on Sukhumvit :D

Why would I pay 30k+ for a unit, when I can have more square footage, at half the price any where away from the "SuCk", and spend those additional funds elsewhere (Seems like simple logic to me, but what do I Know). "Somewhat overpriced" > Keep your head buried in the sand!

Anyone who defends the "Suck", tells me more than I need to know about the individual.

    :)

Bottom line Sukhumvit not for CHEAP CHARLIES. :D:D:D:D
