  1. I would never buy a condo in a tourist resort town like pattaya or phuket. One terrorist (e.g. southern insurgents in Thailand) bomb can ruin the market for years (see what happened in Bali); whereas a bomb in a capital city will not have the same effect since tourism is only a tiny part of the whole local economy.

Basically if you are buying to rent, go where the most people with the most money are- capital cities.

Thats a ridiculious post with insane assumptions <deleted>, what colour shirt are you wearing?? get my drift? :)

Didnt mean to be alarmist, but i saw condo/foreign property market plummet in Bali after the bombing and it still hasn't recovered years later. With all the risk in buying property, at least that's one less risk if you avoid holiday resort towns (in any country really, not just Thailand).

Personally im very bullish on Thailand, i see a very bright future economically in the medium-long term (which is why im looking to buy a condo here my self).

Bali is in a Muslim country, need I say more? :D:D:D:D:D

  2. Since Monday, police have set up 230 checkpoints around the capital from 10pm to 5am as a security precaution.

What does this mean? No checkpoints between 5 am and 10 pm? What's the point? The BiB will probably be asleep at their posts.

In a taxi yesterday I observed police with rifles(two at one place),we made eye contact and he laughed as I gave him a thumbs up. :):D :DIt was 3pm so I imagine 24hrs.

  3. "... if you have more than $10,000 in a foreign account, ...."

Believe it's actually if you have in the aggregate, $10k or more, so several bank accounts could add up to that amount.

BTW, it's a Dept of Treasury form and mailed to another address, NOT to be included with your 1040.

    Mac

Just sent mine off ,I do wonder if the letter will get there, you have no way of knowing if they receive it.No I won't send it registered but I will deal with that IF I ever hear from them. There is a heavy fine for not reporting,I have over $10,000 just for the retirement requirements. On your tax form there is a box to check yes or no if you have a foreign account. That is one way they catch you.The banks have your passport number and are required to report your account to the USA.The low interest means no big amount to report,I was here during the 12/15 % interest and the income was nice. :):D:D:D:D

  4. Thailand's banks are probably safer than most in the West these days- the reason why they werent really affected by the crisis in 2008 is because they manage their funds more conservatively than Western banks.

    WHAT?

    Are you serious?

This has to be the most inaccurate post of the DECADE!

Keep your money off shore in a term deposit in Australia, any currency except the Euro as its going to be downward for the next year or more.

Any currency that the Greeks or Gordon Brown have access too should be sold ASAP.

    Really?

Dozens of western banks went bankrupt as a result of the economic crisis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_acqui...inancial_crisis

How many Thai banks went bankrupt?

    There you go...

And nobody lost any money in the states.Safer than any other country. :):D:D:D:D:D:D

  5. I live in Bangkok and rarely return to the US. For tax purposes I have an address in Nevada. To avoid being chased by California I have my Retirement info and some other official stuff sent to that address. No problems so far. Changing my mailing address instantly put 14.000 cash in my hand the first year (2003).

I file state taxes in Calif.,because of the interest I receive from my credit union. My Calif pension is tax free and I don't pay any taxes but I have to file anyway. The US , IRS never forgives or forgets, that is why some fly planes into IRS offices. :D:):D:D

  6. I think it was P.J. O'Rorke who said "If you think health care is expensive now, just wait and see how much it costs when it's free."

He was wrong. The US system proves it. The only industrialized country without universal health care, the most expensive system in the world, leaving a out a huge chunk of the population from access to care, with poor results in disease rates and life expectancy.

The people of the US do not take care of themselves, this is the major reason for the costs.Get your facts straight before making comments. You can get the best medical care in the world in the states, but you have to plan for it,and it has to be paid for,the people that don't have health insurance, should not get proper care. :):D:D:D

  7. (France vs Ireland on Saturday would be a great 'try' out).

Are you going to take it to the pub with you ?

I have one for about 6 months,no complaints and the price is right. :):D:D:D:D:D The DVD movies are perfect too!!!

  8. In the first instance, I reckon go with PM the perpetrators, and then if that falls on deaf ears, do as you have done here with a very polite request before going further, and if that leaves you flat, then look at the nature of it to begin with, but if you still have a good cause, then start a website on it.

Just one complaint? They practice hear no evil here. :):D:D:D

  9. Vastly overpriced, I'd say. What's a lil' pain anyway? I'd have been much happier to have saved, oh, 3,600 baht:

You get what you pay for. You want it cheap and to hel_l with quality...that's your preference. It's not mine.

The one thing that never ceases to amaze me in this forum is how many people think of only "cheap".

Agree, this form is full of "Cheap Charlies".They should have planned their life better. :D:D:D:):D:D

  10. I'm expecting, these guys will get the same deal as the jet crew that was smuggling North Korean missiles and other arms bound for the Middle East until they had to land in BKK... Being sent home without any indictment here...because their home countries asked for their return.

Sounds just about right for the Turkish guys scamming credit cards... No harm to Thailand, no foul... Just pack them back to their home country, and all is well... :D

I blame the credit card company, they are too cheap to put your picture on the card. :):D:D:D:D
