  1. 1.7 million tablets. But NO charging stations. And most schools don't have enough plug sockets......1363873080529.jpg

    You are of course talking about the schools that have electricity.

    Funny the Government is so silent about the others.

    To be fair its ONLY 2000 schools with no electricity. I wonder how many DON'T have sufficient internet connectivity!

    diesel generators? - also can!

    I mean - we can also supply power diesel generators to your non-electrified 2000 schools.

    No problem at all.

    PM me! Everybody will be very happy.

  2. If you're really planning to use this as your day to day phone, the wireless charger is recommended. I am going to use this as a second phone so a bit on the fence on that for now.

    Also read about a rumored Nexus 5 to be introduced in 1 or 2 months. But it's supposed to have a 5" screen which I find too big anyway.

    Mine has not shipped yet, I guess the 8GB is in short supply.

    [PS: Another advantage of Shipito - the Oregon mailing address; no sales tax! :) ]

    Are you divorceing I-phone?

  3. Sorry, I mean we have about 17 of these at the moment sitting in the directors office gathering dust. We want to stick them into a single charging station where you could connect them all up to charge in between use. I know you can get similar systems for Ipads, but these have pretty bad power connection inputs so not sure if anything is available.

    Basically, we want to be able to charge them together, and have a unit we could move from room to room as necessary. If we can't find something commerical, at a reasonable price, then probably we will hook up a bunch of power stips and stuff it all within some sort of box with dividers.

    Any suggestions would be useful.

    I have found device you are looking for.It is ready made product — USB Charging Station - its name.

    Price is very reasonable.

    PM me if you are still interested.

  4. I think your problem is with director.

    Regarding charging station - I think,by now - somebody in another school already made it,and may be he can supply it.

    To make it on your own you need to puchase stabilized power supply 5v/10A;connect 20 USB cables to it ...and it will be ready to use.

    you will also need some table or shelve where you can position your tablets securely for charging or for use.So,it involves investment - power supply and USB cables,

    power supply you can find in any destop PC,cables in any comp. shop.

    Another way is to use small power adapters supplied with tablets.You have to purchase 5 power extension cords of good quality with fuze and surge protector.

    You have to fix them on sort of shelve or table with place for your tablets and ...thats it!You can move this table from room to room.

    Children will love you.

    You better create impression,that it was director's brilliant idea,children will love him too.

    May be even better idea is to move your children to another school?I do not think - that you can change director?

  5. Sounds like a handout from the DoEd. Where are investigative questions with reference to failure rate, battery life, % of students who have not received their tablets, why only 2 subjects?

    In computer section of Thai Visa you will find thread 17(seventeen!) pages,almost 500 posts:"which tablet?" - you will learn there about:

    failure rate,battery life,power requirements,where to buy in Thailand,how much etc. and anything you want to know.

    You do not need Nation for this sort of technical information.

    Read Thai Visa!.

  6. Sans a Clip+ is the best player ever.New one is so cheap,that looking for refurbished makes no sense.

    I bought half a dozen already and the only problem I had with them was - they are easy to lose,because they are very light

    and small.

    Read review in www.anythingbutipod.com

    They are very popular - very famous for its hi-fi sound quality and good,simple interface.They have memory slot - up to 32G,

    plenty of music in such tiny item.

    However! - you need good earphones to appreciate Sans a sound quality.Good earphones? - minimum 100 $! 2 times more,then player itself.

  7. Can anybody explain why a tablet needs 2 cameras - front and back?

    Scanning bar codes? On what? Are they bar-coding students now (not a bad idea)?

    Cant you use your common sense?

    front camera is low quality for communication,to take picture of yourself(Thai teenagers love it,look on Hi5 or Sanook)

    back camera is good quality,you can take pictures and shoot movies.

    what is the purpuse of digital camera in classroom in hands of student? - here you need your common sense and a bit of imagination:

    to take photo of blackboard with teachers writing on it;

    to record teacher's lecture;

    to record performence of school girls-only band;

    to record performance of school theater;

    to copy posters,pages from textbook;

    to record science experiments;

    and many other things.....

    I understand the need for one, but it shouldn't be that difficult to mount a revolving model to face either way with software adjustable resolution?

    BTW I would rather watch a cat cough up a hairball than venture into the mindless world of Hi5 or Sanook TYVM.

    BTW Australians might remember that we had a mixed-sex singing group (children's entertainment) called Hi5. The tasty Asian lass sung a song called "if you had 3 wishes, would you give me one?" I certainly would.

    Yes,your idea about camera is right.I had laptop where you could turn camera to face front or back.

    But today - small cameras are dirt cheap,they use them for video calls,as front.To use camera for taking pictures and to substitude scanner in school inviroment - you need 5M;it doesnt work very fast and it is not very cheap.To use them - you need to look on display

    During my last holidays I observed,that many people use ipads as their main cameras! at least they can compose their pictures nice and easy.

    but I would not count on such solution - with chinese tablets.

    @rubl - I did not see your link about Ethiopia and I did not know that story from the source.It is nice idea to teach and learn by play,but the results come usualy as a result of hard work.

    It's not really about what school children or students can do with tabletPCs. It's more an issue of what is useful and fitting within the curriculum defined for a certain school year. Even when standardizing to a single hardware platform I can imagine some functions to be disabled for early years and enable later on. wai.gif

    You underestimate the power of natural intelligence.there is that guy,who runs project OneLaptopForOneChild in Africa Nicholas Negroponte.

    He performed interesting and succesful experiment - distributing tablets to children without electricity,no help from teacher,

    no instruction manual and far from civilisation.

    Tablets from Acer,Taiwan came with some applications, memory card and solar charger.Card was used to record all activities on tablet and was changed every month.

    They studied - how tablet was used and they discovered,that kids figured it out very fast.

    At the end od experiment kids discovered how to hack google.All without any outside help if you do not count Sun energy.

    Another development in this field: Gov.Of India decided to follow Thailand example and they distribute similar tablets to their needy children on massive scale;

    but they charge 28$ for one child and also - 80$ for out of school public.Their tablets are made in India and they have simpler specification then Thai.

    Problem with software? - my 4yrs olds fall in love with "Talking Cat",try it yourself - it will inspire you.Software needs creative minds and is in making."TalkingCat" is available free.

    Ipads and Galaxys are great gadgets,but if destroyed by child - it will cause your liver to burst from pain,3000B loss is more easy to digest.

    Technological progress in this field is so fast,that there is leap every 3 month.

    there is not much sense in investing to much,to early.

  10. Buchholz! school bags with solar panel for every child in your poor school?Think about it!They are also ...Made In China.

    In fact - solar panels are big thing in China export.

    I agree.

    The Education Ministry should buy 900,000 solar-paneled school bags.

    That will go a long way in improving education in Thailand.

    coffee1.gif

    .

    I have better idea:

    Thai MinistryOfDefence should collect all dummy bomb detectors(30 000US$/piece X 900 pcs=27 000 000Us$?)

    and send all this rubbish to supplier and demand refund.

    It will pay for about 20 000 good quality diesel generators(Cummings will do?)for all villages without electricity.

    However,I have doubts if it is feasable - that British gentleman who pulled that trick is well to smart,he will not pay back.

    I have back - up plan in the same ministry:they have that rusting aircraft carrier and no money for her exploitation and maintenance.They should sell it!

    I know one party,which will pay double price!they have already bought 3 unfinished aircraftcarriers from Russia and Ukraine;they would love to have another one UK designed and UK build:

    China Ministry Of Defence!may be barter trade is possible?UK generators are much more reliable...

    Buchholz! - you have good relation with Thai Ombudsman Office?After they are finished with Taksin's passport

    they should go after this...?

  11. So all you need is to run the headmaster's Vigo outside during school day and run cables, eh ?

    So it was never one tablet per child but one per headmaster's Vigo.

    I wonder how my sister in law will get on as she is headmistress of a 500 pupil primary school in rural Udon province and only has an approx. 30 year old scooter that she could run all theses gadgets off. The thing hardly generates enough power to run itself. Tablets? Other basic teaching resources would be more welcome.

    are you saying that your sister's in law school is without electricity?could you provide its photo here?

    we had problem; picture of thai school not connected to national grid,without electric instalation.it is hard to find one.

    your sister can charge her smartphone from her scooter if she needs.What does she use? Blackberry?Galaxy?

  12. What are you suggesting, that an entire class just get up and go to a nearby Starbucks whenever a lesson they're working on could potentially benefit from Internet access? How many people do you think those cafes hold? And they're almost always full when I pass by anyway. "Sorry kids, the Starbucks is too crowded. We'll have to put the lesson on hold for today."

    I seriously doubt that cafe would appreciate hoards of students showing up every day just to mooch on their wifi. Those businesses put wifi in place to attract paying customers.

    http://www.thaivisa....ee-or-get-lost/

    @Attrayant! Are you in Thailand?

    you have not seen internet cafe in Thailand!

    Of course - there are some Starbucks in Thailand,but not to many.

    Schoolchildren do not go there,their mammas give them only 20 B for lunch,where is 150B for coffee?(icecream?)

    Thai internet cafe - it is rather internet saloon with raw of comps,basic chairs,it cost - 20B/hour;coffee is not available at all,

    sometime they have fridge with soft drinks/ice water and noodle shop outside on the street.It is full of quite young boys playing GTA and older girls writing "sick buffalo" emails to their multiple foreign boyfriends/husbands.

    @issanUSA,Attrayan

    are you going sometime to Singapore?

    there is that Starbucks there located over metro station CityHall(center of the town) - you should see this place!every table comes with power outlet,good wi-fi with all networks available there free and paid.

    this is students hang-out,there are half a dozen of colleges around and National Library;students are sitting around for hours sipping 5$ drinks;

    they are not poor buggers,they are rich kids from all Asia in Singapore schools.Everybody with comp/ipad/smartphone.

    In Thai Nakhonnowhere - you will not meet any of them.

    @Attrayan - internetcafe in Asia it is place which provide paid access to comps and internet,it has nothing to do with coffee.

  13. Only 700 schools out of 30,000 have Internet connectivity. A good example of how much infrastructure Thailand needs. How could they order all those tablets before setting up wifi nodes? What a backwards priority.

    It is little bit out of topic,but it answers you Noitom:

    couple of weeks ago there was interesting show in BBC about impact of hi-tech gadgets on life in the 3rd world countries.

    It was mostly about smartphones,laptops,iphones,ipads and tablets.

    You see people using them everywhere,even in very remote and rural places without electricity,far from electric grid.

    People need them ,they make biz more efficient,social life more fluid...

    And there was a question:

    how people charge these gadgets without electricity available there?

    Gadgets consume little energy - this is a fact;so people can use alternative sources of electricity like solar panels,wind,micro-hydro,diesel generators.But the most popular are ...car batteries.They do not have electric grid,but 4WD jeeps come everywhere.

    So,this is the way it works in reality - car batteries.

    At the end of the show they made interesting for us here - observation:

    about tablets!

    In rural schools with no electricity, tablets are being used as a display devices instead of projectors or big monitors;bingo!

    Buchholz! school bags with solar panel for every child in your poor school?Think about it!They are also ...Made In China.

    In fact - solar panels are big thing in China export.

  14. But here we have a post that asks the right questions, doesn't compare apple and orange and make smart remarks despite a very basic english.

    Except for this part:

    Any school with internet connection can install wi-fi router,they do not need "free wi-fi" from government.(who came here with this brilliant idea? ).

    Anybody with internet access can open private,home wi-fi.Public free wi-fi? what do you need it for?Schools do not need it at all.

    If the schools are built the same way my house is, with rebar and poured concrete, a wireless access point is only going to reach 6-8 meters at most. That means one WAP for every two classrooms. Then you need to run all the cabling to serve the APs. It all needs to be backed up with secondary power (unless you want to hire an army of wireless network techs to reload the configurations each time a school has a power hiccup). And WAPs can have a limited number of simultaneously-connected clients. Most consumer grade WAPs cannot serve more that one or two dozen clients. Even enterprise-grade hardware has an upper limit of about a hundred clients per service module.

    Also, the poster seems to think that wireless routers can magically create Internet access just by being installed somewhere. Of course the school must have a high capacity uplink first, which certainly isn't free.

    I spent several years leading the IT modernization project for Washington DC schools. Planning and maintaining a wifi service area is a tricky job.

    And as for content filtering, I recall that Websense is available for about $25 per client session. Multiply that by the number of users expected to be surfing the Internet at any one time and there's your price tag for an enterprise-grade content filtering solution. I suspect it will be a lot less that $6.7 million.

    You are from USA,so you do not know this phenomena:internet cafe.

    All around Thailand you will find them.There is no magic about it - just biz opportunity.

    Since the year - 2000,they mushroomed everywhere in all nakhonnowheres,who are customers?backpackers? - no ! local schoolboys and girls playing on-line games and doing school homeworks.What they play? - the most popular is now Wacraft,before - it was ,,,"Grand Theft Auto"

    And who gave them internet access? was it MAGIC?

    Man! open your eyes,open your mind! there is life here without you.

    In every post office in Thailand they have internet terminal for customers since circa 1997.

    Eva Pascoe opened her internet cafe in BKK about 1994 and she was not the first.

    In school you do not need massive internet access through wi-fi;you need it only for technical reasons.

    Tablets run applications without wi-fi.

  15. i just can not believe they spent 200m bht ( err 4m euro ) to develop anti porn software.... which already exisits in most windows platforms = parental control ( nanny button)....... i suspect the whole shipment of tablets would not have cost that figure....common plueese...perhaps the kids will believe them, no one else will

    this software is system to make tablet closed.Tablet can be used only to play installed applications.You are not allowed to install what you want.It is not anti pornoprogram,windows platform doesnt work on android.

    If you want to play everything what is available in GooglePlay Store - buy another tablet,there are many available.I suggesst to go for Samsung,Asus,Acer. or Ainol,Cube or Ramos.

    Do not spoil school property!

  16. so much negatitivety why is it blamed on low quality in China when all said and done apple does most its manufacturing there and considered good quality

    Do you do realize that China is capable of producing both a good product, for 23,000 baht, such as an iPad and at the same make a less-than-good product, for 2500 baht, such as a ScoPad?

    .

    What are the bases for your prices ? What do you get for 23,000 bahts ? I just check the AppleStore, iPad starts at 13,500

    And where does this price of 2,000 come from ?

    I was in Shenzen last week.Tablet with specification same to OTOC is 2000THB retail loco Shenzen;whole sale? - much less,with such huge order like

    OTOC - much!much less.

    Do not compare it with Ipad,compare it with product of similar specification.

    Thai gov. should open new factory in Thailand and produce tablets here,it makes economical sense and gives jobs.

    Ipad is not better - it doesnt have memory slot.You can put new softo in tablet inserting memory card,without acces to internet.

    Any school with internet connection can install wi-fi router,they do not need "free wi-fi" from government.(who came here with this brilliant idea? ).

    Anybody with internet access can open private,home wi-fi.Public free wi-fi? what do you need it for?Schools do not need it at all.

  17. In place without electricity you can not run electrical appliences - no tv,no electrical fan,no light,no computers,no air-con

    what is your point?

    How will the 2000 schools without electricity manage these new tablets?

    Electrification of Thailand is not the subject of this thread,we are talking about tablets batteries life span.

    But...

    In Black Africa they have this program - 100$laptop in every school.

    Electricity in Africa is far away from most of the population,it is not a distance of 5mtrs power extension cord,rather 500km.

    But they implement this program using:solar power,wind power,microhydro and diesel generators.

    Some local studends came with brilliant idea -

    they coupled bicycle with big dynamo and they charge laptop ...pedaling.

    If you want - you can.

    It is called "Can Do" attitude.

    You can donate solar panels to you poor school next door.I can supply.PM me.

  18. And what is the rated power of said socket you are plugging the tablet into. Oh. And remember we are talking about P1 (6 years old) I wouldn't like my kid to be plugging instuff to a dodgy ext lead. Would you?

    the point is do it properly or do something else.

    His point is your an arse with no real idea about Thai schools.

    I have kids in public school:smalish NkhonNowhere town,3000 pupils,among Thai staff - half a dozen of foreign teachers,

    comp.lab,school wi-fi network,town has fm station,asphalt streets,running water everywhere.I have been in plenty of places in Thailand and I have to admit with shame - I have not seen any place without electricity.

    May be you live in that God forgotten backwater - Pattaya/SriRacha?

    If you had a tablet in your hand - you would know,that it runs on 5(five)volts.Car runs on 12Volts.

    You can stuck 5volts up your own arse - and you will feel nothing.

  19. Tablets in schools will be used in classrooms mostly,yes?during that time they can be powered from chargers.It is very obvious for anybody but complete technological nitwits.

    Couple of months ago there were threads in TV Computer Section about tablets from China,full of interesting details and positive opinions.

    Computer section is devoted to technology,you will not find there any poltics or politicos...

    Most of us do not visit the Computer section and I am quite sure the new tabs are not a big item there yet. Wait until about a month after the kids have had them and then check the computer section.

    Just out of curiosity do you run one while it is charging in a school with no electricity.

    I bet that none of the politicians kids are in those schools. That means all politicians regardless of there party or color of their shirt.

    Give it six months and see if the schools start to turn out smarter kids.

    In place without electricity you can not run electrical appliences - no tv,no electrical fan,no light,no computers,no air-con

    what is your point?

  20. Cheap, and to read PDFs - why would you want a tablet when a Kindle or a Nook will do the job?

    This would be for, as I say, studying heavily-formatted pdf files. Think anatomy textbook, not a novel. From what I see on the Web, Kindle and Nook do a terrible job with textbookish pdf files. Nook even has Nook Study for PCs, saying that tablets don't do the job with textbooks.

    You are right - Kindle doesnt handle pdf very well.
