Popular Post george
Starbucks Thailand tells teachers "order more coffee or get lost" BANGKOK: -- Starbucks Thailand has issued a public notice telling private tutors taking advantage of their seats and wifi to order more coffee, or get lost. Apparently Starbucks are tired of private tutors holding their lessons in their airconditioned coffee shops for hours using wifi and occupying seats. Freeloaders, be aware! Popular Post repoulin
From my experience it usually a bunch of kids studying on their own, with one drink between them. True Coffee opened up areas with big tables specifically for these groups. Maybe Thailand should get some librarys/study areas going. I like to get my Starbucks to go anyways

Just sit at the table with them and say hello. (Not that I would ever be caught dead in Starbucks)

Popular Post johnlandy
Good move. Agreed, far too many of these one glass of water or a one cup of coffee a day bludgers here. Take a look around, they are clearly visible. As for being teachers the jury is out on that too.

Popular Post MunterHunter
Its a valid comment, regardless of what the outlet sells, if you are going to spend time on the premises then you should purchase an appropriate amount of their goods or services... Common sense really

Popular Post Ianatlarge
! I did not realise that sitting for a few hours and nursing a cup of coffee was a hanging offence. Give these people a break. So that spend a few hours learning at SBs. Good. If you want to complain about something find something worth complaining about.
Popular Post Mosha
Teacher should tell Starbucks, "When you start to sell coffee, I'll order one."
MartinBKK
How can this be enforced? Are they going to call the police? If there is no official allocated time for drinking your coffee i really don't see how anyone could be evicted.

You are so right. I live near Chiang Mai University and this is a universal problem at every coffee shop around here, but especially at Starbuck's. Some students will sit there all <deleted>' day studying...actually I wonder how much studying they actually do because it seems that they spend more time talking or playing with their mobiles!

Popular Post ManOnTheRoad
Government should plat a role in this situation by setting up more public library , I am very frustrated when trying to get a seat at Starbuck around town when seeing lots of students or with their tutor taking up the space for hours
bob/nyc
About time. Every Saturday and Sunday at the Starbucks on Silom, an older Thai guy with a Mahidol jacket is teaching about 4-5 kids. In addition to occupying the large table, the students also take up 2-3 small round tables. He is there from early afternoon till closing time. Also on Sunday a farang teacher was teaching a Thai student. It really is not bad with just students alone, it is the teachers that they need to get under control. On Saturday, some tourists could not find a spot to sit.
Doznotdiz
Well what do they expect? Everyone is glued to either a smart-phone or a laptop these days. Sociologists are saying that society is going in the wrong direction because of this new technology. People don't look where they are walking because they are captivated by Facebook on their mobile phones and others watch entire movies in cafes whilst sharing one iced-coffee. And the same problem is occurring at restaurants. It's time for these places to either stop offering wi-fi or to charge for it. There are so many cafes in Thailand now anyway, that I'm surprised anyone even goes to Starbucks anyway for their overpriced food and drink. toenail
I would argue that Star Bucks does NOT have free wi-fi. I made a complaint to headquarters last year about it (free in other countries). Coffee World and other places have free Wi-Fi so I am surprised these students/ tutors don't hang out where Wi-fi is free, (maybe they do). But I can understand why Starbucks or another cafe/restaurant would want to limit the time to "hang out" at a table meant for customers. Maybe the seats are more comfortable at Star Bucks. 555 Edited July 25, 2012 by toenail

Common sense really Thais tend to do it another way as I've experienced in various upmarket hotels for Sunday brunch. They attack the buffet like a plague of locusts, take all the lobster, caviar and other expensive items (Even if they don't like the taste) and then disperse as quickly as they arrived.
