  1. Please can any experienced photographers recommend a good digital compact camera for me. I have read great reviews of the Canon G10 powershot, I believe its around 20k? That is really all I want to spend, is their something else I should consider or will that do the job. Primarily it will be used for photo's of my daughter, short video's and use on holiday, landscapes, beaches etc

If their is something else I should be looking at please let me know.

    Kind regards

  2. Not off topic, buy the beer where you buy the garlic or next door.....back on garlic topic.

Some pubs are hurting really badly, if you hunt around you can get as much as 15% discount in certain pubs off drinks and food. They'd like to kid you they buy in Rimping, though the wife sees their shoppers at the veg and meat market early am....if they did give 15% off and bought at Rimping they'd go out of business....hmm maybe thats why they are?

ChiangMai2- " A new low. Turning a thread about garlic into a dig about a pub.. Amazing! "

And your contribution to the garlic is.....

Garlic, on the whole cheap and tasteless. Pretty much like the comment I replied to! :)

  4. Very very well written. Thank you.

Is there a separate Sunday buffet at Le Meridien that is not Chinese?

yes but was it American, French or Thai style Chinese?? That seems to be crucial for some :)

I sometimes miss British Chinese take-away food, dripping grease & MSG, with a side-order of chips/curry-sauce ! International dining at its most-memorable ! :bah:

spring rolls the size of bricks that you can literally ring out and glow in the dark sweet and sour sauce, quality stuff! :)

  5. Lunch at Bistro 1 at Rimping/Airport yesterday.

That looks FAR too neat and clinical. Not messy enough. It looks professional alright, but everything in its own pretty little dish..? That to me does not 'Fish & Chips' say. The harmony to it all is just gone. 'Fish & Chips'. "FISH & CHIPS". Even the name sounds like they should be together, intimately.

The picture above looks like a court-brokered living arrangement. Or a stock-photo you might use in a Powerpoint presentation or business plan brochure. All components neatly in their own little designated area.

Instead, I want it to look as if it just naturally materialized in front of me, a sudden random manifestation of food.

    Like this, say:

    halibut-fish-and-chips.jpg

Note how the ketchup hugs the little dish, messily. How the chunks of fish are bouldering all over the chips. The lemon wedge that looks like it doesn't want anything to do with the rest of the party, wasting it's Vitamine-C-ishness on the neighbouring orgy of proteine, carbs and fat. That, in summary, is a man's meal.

And there is Beer. Dark Beer. Not the Diet Coke Sceadenga had. ;)

Were you a builder at one point? Extraordinary food for ordinary people :)

  6. I'd like it if folks using "reply" would not do so if it reprints 42 earlier posts. Copy and paste with attribution works. Also, if those indulging in personal animus from centuries ago would fogeddaboutit? Oh, well, not my bizness.

The merits of these two Vietnamese places will be determined by their sales, for rental units there are not cheap.

I can say one thing about the Vietnamese place next to Kellys (sic). They are honest. Dropped a 100 note and a fellow chased me to the parking lot to get give (?)it back to me.

    Love the English lessons.

Completely off topic but replying to you as you raised it..

"Loving English lessons" is apparently very different from actually benefiting from them it seems.

""aimless meandering " no. not good style. off topic, but you raised it. you wouldn't catch ian forbes making such a gaffe"

    Or needing them ! :)

  7. Is it safe in Chaing Mai? Well if I was farang woman and walked around drunk and half naked after 2AM then maybe I wouldn't be safe. If I was stupid, drunk farang male who flashed gold and a full wallet in the early morning hours in the sleazy parts of town then maybe I wouldn't be safe. If I got drunk and started fights with the locals or the police then I wouldn't be safe. If I had never ridden a motorbike or scooter before and I took off drunk on a rental bike then I CERTAINLY wouldn't be safe.

But, for the 98% of the rest of us we can walk around at any hour of the day or night and remain reasonably safe. It all depends on the mental capacity of the person involved. Some victims almost advertise that they are vulnerable. In the many years I've been hanging around the sleazy parts of Chiang Mai after hours I've never had the slightest problem. That is a WHOLE LOT MORE than I can say for the Pilippines where I've had 4 acquaintences murdered.

Eew..Would not want to get on the wrong side of you! Admitting to it in public too.. Wow :)

  8. Just went in for a try. Thought I might have a burger. Nobody waiting for food. Place about half full. Five people stuffing around and nobody took my order in spite of my Marcel Marceaux impressions; just nice smiles. After 20 minutes and another later arrival being served, I left. They lose.

Maybe they didn't see you, the place must be pushing on 40 sqm! It's vast :)

  9. Thank for correction, I'll always confuse this.

If you want to spoil yourself buy some 200gr + salmon Sashimi in one piece , not the pre-cut from Rimping, for which the price some 100b higher.

I've never thought of doing that ! silly me.. Always buy the pre-cut ! Next time...

  10. We often have Rimping's salmon sushi at home, 830b /kg , plus Wasabi don't need anything else for dinner, not even rice.

Sushi consists of rice, the salmon sashimi is quite nice though. Although one brand is definitely better than the other, just know it by sight though!

  11. They had one at Gymkhana on Saturday, maybe talk to the staff there and they may know where it was organised from. A few years ago Guenter from Doi Saket used to do it he has a write up in the December Dining Guide, if he still doesn't he may be able to put you on the right track.

Guenther still does it, used him several times. Definitely the best in terms of taste however not the cheapest. He will also do Thai food and other German fayre. He's even supplied us with caviar in the past! yum :)

  13. So has anyone been down on Loh Kroh and heard the gossip? I haven't been lately but I am sure they are dishing like crazy about what happened. It's impossible to keep a secret on that street.

Would be interesting to hear what the regulars are saying. Rumblings from the rumor mill anyway.

With no info other than the article I would lean toward a YaBa paranoia hypothesis but just a wild guess.

There had to be some witnesses.

banana skins can send a man crazy !

  14. The cameras Ta22 recommended look fine. I have seen kids under 3 years old operating similar size but more complex cameras.

Thanks but I think you're both missing the point. Anyway it seems they are not available so I got her a Canon EOS-1DS 111 :)

  15. go get yourself a Sanyo or Nikon Digital cam .

Thanks for the suggestion, I should of mentioned the child is only 4 1/2. The above isn't really what I had in mind. Great for when she is older but not right now. The fischer price and Vtech models look like this. If anyone has seen anything similar please let me know. Kind regards CM2

  16. Has anyone seen a child's digital camera on their travels?

Vtech or Fischer-price do some child friendly versions however I've left it too late to order in for Christmas. If anyone has seen anything locally please let me know.

    Much appreciated

    Kind regards

  17. Nice to see a big crowd at the UN Irish Pub today for the 3rd test. Mostly Brits, but a few brave Aussies.....good on ya mates.thumbsup.gif

Considering the terrible start Australia made, they fought back and did very well to reach 268 all out.......hopefully Cooke can wipe that out all by himself, but it was a bit heartless of him hitting a six, off a fast bowlers second over. wink.gif

Will: I see what you mean about Clarke and caraway seeds.......that shot wasn't even worthy of the Chiang Mai sixes! And what shall we say about the Captain? violin.gif

    Zzzzzz... It's like the record's stuck!! :)

    Aaah, couldn't resist a peek eh? smile.gif

Must say you've not been very annoying recently... You need to work on that, I might lose interest! :)

  18. dpending on what lens you got , maybe you can try selling on the forum classified

Thanks and of course, I took that into consideration. I will try that if I don't find a shop where I can trade them in, which would be more convenient. The lenses are 8 months old, btw. One is a Sigma 18-200 f/1:3.5-6.3 lens which I used only in a few occasions, the other a Sigma wide angle 10-20 f/1:3.5.

http://www.photobugonline.com/ Photbug, might do it, I have been offered used lenses there before , not sure they make a habit of it though!
