  1. If you locate in places such as Phuket or Pattaya, your language skills should put you at great advantage. Most vets I've visited speak no English. I assume you can speak German as well as English. Probably the two most important languages (other than Thai) for running a vet clinic in the two cities named above.

  2. I have had 2 pizzas at Cosa Nostra 2 on Soi Buakow last week. If you like a thin crust pizza it is A+. I had the marguarita pizza at 150 baht and found it to be perfect. I ate one there and enjoyed it so much I took one home and stuck it in the freezer. Heated it up a few days later and it was just a good as freshly made. I come from NYC, where we have great pizza and I have a fairly good eye for a good pie..........enjoy!!

Eric -- Where on Soi Buakhao is Cosa Nostra 2?

And if you like NY pizza (ala John's on Bleeker?) you gotta try

Pizza Big in Naklua. Closest I've seen/tasted to NY pizza.

  3. Just curious from observation while in Chiang Mai. I noticed two breeds of dogs there. Goldens and muts. Are there any other breeds in Thailand? Not a joke, I'm serious. :)

All I could think of was some regulation not allowing other breeds but I have no idea.

    Hi, Bolo--

You can get whatever kind of dog you like in Chiang Mai and anywhere else here.

Virtually every breed of dog is available in Thailand, including breeds that are unique to the

country, such as the Thai_Bangkaew (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_Bangkaew_Dog).

  4. I understand that Sophon's contract with MNet expired and they were

unable to come to terms in their renegotiations; they still might. In the

meantime, we are blessed with yet one more all music-video channel.

  5. That's the best price I've seen for ricotta which, unfortunately, must be used within a week.

On the other hand, you can freeze it for up to 6 months. If you want even fresher and cheaper

ricotta, you can make it yourself:

Combine 4 liters of whole milk with 1 liter of buttermilk in a saucepan and heat on medium high.

Stir occasionally, scraping the pan bottom, to avoid scorching. When hot, stop stirring. Curds will

rise to the surface, scrape bottom of occasionally to free up stuck curds.

While the milk is heating, line a colander with five layers of cheesecloth. Once milk reaches about

80 degrees c. , remove pan from heat and slowly ladle the curds (the white clumps) onto the cheese

cloth. Enfold cloth and allow all liquid to drain (do not squeeze) for about 20 minutes, then put mixture

into an airtight container and refrigerate.

  6. I've had a Phantom for about three years (10,000 kls) and it's been problem free. Adequate power for tooling around town. The price you quote looks about right, and the bike has appeared to maintain its value (all ads I've seen for second hand bikes have been in the 60,000 to 65,000 baht range). However, if you live in the Pattaya area, you might check out the advert board at Friendship Market (Pattaya Tai). Someone just posted an advert asking only 28,000 baht for what I believe is a 2006 or 2007 model. I have no idea why so cheap and don't remember any other details.

  7. There may be one catch: When I tried opening a checking account at a local bank, they said checking accounts were only available to business entities. I have not looked into it since, but be prepared to be denied a checking account.

It seems to me it would be much easier to arrange credit card (and any other) payments on line through your bank in Hawaii, assuming you have an account there.

  8. Another perfect example of TIT. Removal of unsightly and dangerous wires and poles from Beach Road has been a planned priority for years. The project could have been accomplished the several times that sidewalks have been dug up and reconstructed over the last decade. Now in the interest of tourism the city decides to dig up the walkway and street just as high season begins (assuming there will be a high season this year), again precluding visitors from enjoying the seaside promenade (and its resident assemblage of katoey, pick-pockets, working girls, etc.) TIT indeed.

  9. In the "Ask Andy" (DIY) column of Pattaya Today, Oct. 16 issue, a reader asked a similar question. Andy suggested contacting your local HomePro store or a commercial tank cleaning company. Lacking that, he said why not hire a gardener or handyman to do the job? It's simply a matter of climbing into the empty tank, brushing down the walls, and giving it a thorough rinse with a strong hose. Handy Andy advised doing that about every three months.

  10. You can get reasonable French Bread at most Carrefours.

I'm sure there will be better available but not as widespread.

The only Italian break I can think of is Subway. I don't remember seeing a Ciabata or anything special anywhere. (but I don't live in the centre of Bangkok).

Carrefour now carries ciabata in a variety of flavors (like Rosemary, olive, cheese).

They are excellent and cost about 57 baht for a half kilo loaf.
