  1. Has anyone asked for a legal opinion (not that of a TV member or some police major general

colonel supervisor), but an actual legal mind who knows the law and/or can access rules and

    regs on the books?

And has anyone forwarded this nonsense to TAT for a reaction? On the heels of the coup

and subsequent curfew and media clamp down, Thailand is having enough problems luring

tourists . One would think that the impact on tourist income would be taken into account before

    imposing more restrictions on visitors.

  2. Based on my having lived here 13 years, I would suggest that your £3,000 stake

would see you through three months, irrespective of income. That means renting

or leasing a room, eating three meals a day, enjoying some entertainment, and

    buying incidentals.

As to work, and given your experience, you might have success seeking a job

managing a bar or nightclub, probably not tending bar (which would mean taking

work from a Thai employee). Introduce yourself to some of the many Brits who

own nightspots and feel them out. On the negative side, those who are looking

for managers would no doubt prefer long-term commitments rather than a six-

    month stint.

  3. There are several different types of medication which can be used for this, should have the advice of an experienced urologist.

Surgery for benign enlargement of prostate should not be considered unless management with medication alone failed.

I would urge you to see a urologist and try medical management first before going to India for surgery. Dr. Viroj at Bumrungrad and Dr. Thanoo at Samitivej are both recommended.

I strongly second recommendation to Dr. Viroj. Had visited half a dozen other specialty surgeons,

all of whom glanced at my prostate diagnosis briefly and offered to cut me open the next day or

so. Dr. Virog STUDIED my history and asked if he could perform his own examination before

rendering an opinion, following which he advised against surgery (and that potential income to

him and Bumrungrad) and in favor of radiation and hormone treatment.

A qualified urological surgeon and honorable man (IMHO).

  4. Best I can discern, the source of this 'news' is an unsourced tweet with no links from someone with the New York Times.

I'm not in any way a Yingluck fan, but something doesn't strike me as correct about the story.

The Nation seems to confirm this story. To wit:

Thai-Indian senior businessman to be deported for joining rally

A Thai-Indian business tycoon, Sathit Segal, a core member of the anti-government protests, is to be deported for defying the state of emergency, a spokeswoman for the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) said Tuesday.

The centre already ordered the Immigration Department and police to commence the procedures to deport Sathit.

Sathit, an ethnic Indian, has publicly and openly criticised the Yingluck government on a People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC( stage. The chairman of the ThaiIndian business association, he led protesters in Bangkok's business district.

On January 22, The caretaker government put Bangkok and part of its suburbs under a state of emergency that is to run two months. Earlier reports said Sathit and four others nonThai citizens faced deportation due to their active roles in the protests led by former Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban.

  5. Before shopping or buying anything, I would check Bob Rankin's Web site.

His expertise and objective reporting on a bevy of tech devices is priceless,

Here's a link to your topic:

    Most Reliable Laptops

The reliability of a laptop should be as high on your shopping list as its processor,

RAM, screen size, and other criteria. All the bells whistles in the world aren't worth

much when they aren't working. So who makes the most reliable laptops, and what

    models give the least trouble?

  6. Trogers and KittenKong--

May I ask which Internet server you use and are you happy with reliability?

I am paying a company called "IT" (based in Naklua) 890b a month for

intermittant service and nowhere near 10 mbps.

    Thanks

    TO: Retiredat50--

My monthly bills for 65 sq meter, one-bedroom are about the same as most quoted here--about

US $10 for water; $30 elec.

  7. For cat lovers in the Pattaya area, a British couple (Paul and Sandra)

has some 40 to 50 cats of all ages (from kittens on up) and all in good

health and available for adoption FREE. This is the address for their

    Web site: cats4youinpattaya.webs.com

Very nice of them. I went ahead and donated some money through their website.

    http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/apps/webstore/

And very nice of you, OmegaRacer. They can sure use financial support,

based on my observations when I visited their home last weekend. They

seem to have spared no expense in providing excellent care for each and

every cat--from bottle-feeding premature kittens and hand-feeding disabled

cats, to veterinary care and ample space and distractions for all. Most of the

cats roam freely within the confines of the house and yard most of the time.

They have individual food bowls and litter trays--both of which are tended to

twice daily. Lots of work--lots of expenses--for Sandra and Paul--two loving

souls who selflessly devote their lives to caring for strays and placing them

    in loving homes. Thanks, OR.

  8. WOW! This stirring news comes on the heels of Pattaya Today's Sept 16 front page

report that there has been little progress to solve the jet ski problem that is detracting

from Pattaya's otherwise pristine image. Just goes to show--you never can tell. The

Chonburi governor held a meeting a month ago and they are so intent on ending the

criminal activities that they already had another meeting. Rumor has it that the powers

that be are looking forward to another meeting next month. Little progress my foot!

  9. @Gone: What is the "Mini laminated passports" ?

Where can you get it ?

One of the two expat clubs was offering it. Not sure if Pattaya City Expats Club or Pattaya Expats Club.

You might call and ask or show up for one of their Sunday meetings. Or scan your passport picture page

and 1-year-visa page, then shrink them and make a photo copy.

  10. Thank you, BillD,

I've got the '05 Phantom as well and tossed the owner's manual

at the dealership when I noticed it was ALL in Thai. Been looking

for an English language version for more than 6 year.

You did a good turn for your fellow Phantom owners. (I'm still thrilled

    with the bike, BTW.)

    Cheers

  11. well the level of education in thailand is so low that I decided that in 2013 i will pack my bags and go back to europe to offer real education to my daughters (and most important learning to question and reason by themselves) ... my niece was in her 3rd year of journalism at bangkok university and one day i just tested her and her friends knowledge and it was just incredibly low. simple questions like what is the capital of brazil or some basic 10th grade historical facts found no answer, even simple questions about thai history found no answers ... a few years ago the BP questionned 2nd year students of political science from Chula and they could not even tell who was Jimmy Carter and could not place sweden on a map. when i look at the work that my 9 years old who is in a (private international school) i'm appaled as her program is not even on par whith what i was taught when I was 7 in europe. She will maybe lose 1 year in europe but I prefer this to letting her having a mediocre education and think that cheating is normal, abusing foreigners is normal, that money is the most important thing in life, that people with money and power are always right, that corruption is normal etc...etc...

Well said and worth expanding upon and repeating for wider dissemination -- including in the Thai media. Most won't care about a farang's point of view on the topic, but some will. Maybe you will touch a chord in the right hearts.

  12. Also H5N1 in Shenzhen China and Hong Kong since Dec. 20, 2011. Shenzhen bus driver died in late December from H5N1. Watch out for those Chinese tourists, sneezing and coughing.

Happy to see you're on top of outbreaks here in Asia (REALLY; I wish more people were),

BUT as far as transmission is concerned, there are very few known cases of H5N1 being

passed from one human to another. Little need to fear running into visitors from China.
