Nothing wrong with the swimming pool on the left, 1-2km out, as you head out to Lahan Sai. As for the recommendation for 'NR Beach', I'd give that a miss mate. I wouldn't let my dog go in that water let alone kids.

disappointing to hear. had my hopes up a little high on that one. fresh water was a bit of a long shot. i might still get a canoe to paddle around. how much does it cost for that swimming pool? my son would swim every day if he could and my daughter will start soon too.

Lam Nang Rong is very nice.I was there last week. Nice and clean. Not sure if it is the same one as mentioned here though. It is locally known as Nang Rong Beach but actually nearer to Pakam.

It is the same one. It's next to Non Din Daeng. Did you notice the pipes leading from the public toilets into the water?

Comments like this are useless without photographic evidence, Sinbin. Otherwise it's all just pie in the sky.

Quite right. You wouldn't want to make a mistake and get caught with your pants down.

  3. Just as long as there is enough water for the golf courses

Yes really! good point, folks love to jump on the Songkan knocking brigade, just how much water is really wasted? If all the golf courses in Thailand didn't water for one day far more water would be saved than banning Songkran!

I have ben around Thailand for 35 years or more, throwing copious amounts of water has always been the way Songkran has been celebrated! the "days of old" when water was gently splashed? maybe in the HiSo families in Bangkok! not in the provinces.

Personally I have no time for Songkran, but out in the sticks it is a yearly celebration, the farming families don't have a great deal to celebrate given the deal given to them by the ruling elite, let them have their fun, amazing Thailand indeed! the amount of foreigners that consider it their right to moan about what is a traditional Thai celebration & the so called HUGE waste of water!

You have been around Thailand for 35 years and come out with a comment like that. Funny.

  4. Swissie, I suggest you actually go to a government hospital, before you spout off nonsense. The doctors have 6 years of medical school, not 3 semesters, then they have their internship residency and all the rest. Sure many smaller hospitals aren't as well quipped as major city hospitals, but that's the same in the west also. My district hospital has a CT Scan, the local hospital in my home country didn't have one when I left 12 years ago, don't know about now. The University Hospital in KK, is one of the best in Thailand. You are always so negative about Thailand, it would probably be better for your medical health if you left.

I HAVE BEEN to Government Hospitals numerous times. On that, I base my judgement. I am not stating that the medics only have to study 3 semesters = it only feels like it.

KK university hospital can hardly be compared to the majority of Government Hospitals somewhere in the sticks. Most Isaan Farangs don't live in KK.

My comments are negative? How about objective? Objectivity is not far away from "truth". But truth is seldom welcome in Thailand.

    Cheers.

That same hospital in KK is in the grounds of the university. One of the best medical universities in the country. A university that sends its graduates to serve as doctors all over Thailand. Including the stick.

Your comments are wide of the mark, Swissie.

"Simonuk" asks the key question. In every society, institutions like education and law enforcement are derived from the values of the underlying culture. It is simply impossible to "clear out" and "start from scratch" as suggested previously. Any attempts to do so would result in new bad ideas on top of old bad ideas. Any effective clearing out and starting over can only be done in the wake of a major calamity: war or overwhelming natural disaster.

This thread is an excellent reminder of why I do as much as possible to avoid anything operated by locals. If I had children here, they would be home schooled or attend international/parochial schools. Not just to achieve a higher academic standard, but so the children would be immersed in Western values throughout their growing years.

I would avoid the Catholic Schools here. I taught at one for about 3 years and, aside from uglier uniforms and higher prices, there is little to distinguish them from the government schools.

Smaller classes, better equipment, all classrooms with air-con, better motivated students. Maybe none of that matters to you. Girls wear long sleeves, otherwise the uniforms are the same.

How many Catholic schools have you been to? Obviously not all of them.

  6. Regarding police and criminal background checks along with reference checks, none are done. It's again, a face issue. If someone the school wanted to hire "failed" such a check, face would be lost. Luckily not many pedos and the rest end up with the children, but it does happen. I suppose that's true in other countries as well. I know at least one Thai school which allows foreigners to spank the students with their infamous hickory sticks. When you start filming it, it of course ceases. With today's phones and the facebook's of the world, such antics have declined. Once a "teacher" knows he/she will be on facebook spanking/swatting a child he/she gets scared. Payback is a bitch sometimes.

    But they are needed to obtain an initial Non-B visa;

For those who are a teacher or trainer in a public or private institution in the country.

The document must include accompanying visas.

    1. A certificate of employment (In the form of the Department of Employment. Ministry of labour) Download Forms
    2. A copy of the employment contract (The start date of employment. The date of submission of the application for a visa. Or after the approved visa, etc.).
    3. Chartered Institute of Educational Institutions
    4. Proof of qualification
    5. Evidence of a criminal background check by the police.
    6. A copy of the work permit And tax returns of aliens (If you've ever worked in Thailand).
    7. Certificate of Education (the employer), the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane with a copy of the signed certificate.
    8. additional documents

    7 and 8 ????

    Good job, LostinIsaan.

I have to agree. Advice like "don't trust her or her family", "lock away the car documents", "don't give her money because she will gamble it away", "theft and lies is a way of life here" really is a waste of time and doesn't bode well for a long happy life in Thailand.

Better advice would be to get to know someone first. It doesn't matter where he/she is from or what they do. If they are bad then that is that, simple. Wait wait wait and just find out for your self. Go and meet the family. Have a look around. Learn some of the language and have a chat. I remember one post on here a while back that said something like " I built a big tall wall around the house and put a lock on the gate. That keeps the family out". What a laugh that is. Straight away you are kind of asking your lady/man to choose between them and you. If you get to know them first you will know by yourself.

Just because a westerner is likely to have more money that the Thai family it doesn't mean that they are better. Many failed relationships that I have seen here have started by the expat turning up like some flash dude thinking he knows everything and flashing his money around. That's a good start!!!!! I remember a guy posting on a forum somewhere boasting about going to soapy massages and girly bars. He wondered why his wife turned against him.

I try to avoid thinking about the different nationalities and cultures. I feel comfortable where I am and who I am with. If I didn't then I wouldn't have married and stayed here. I lived in rented accommodation with my now wife until I knew she was the one. After 16 years together nothing has been stolen, anything I lend is returned and my wife and I have full respect for each other.

I will take great pleasure in coming back on here and reporting again in another 16 years of happy life.

Pardon me, sir. Is it possible that you deliver food in a neighboring province of Sisaket? After reading some posts of your, it must be you.

Can i make a bigger order and can it be delivered, or do I have to pick it up. Pies would be great, haven't had a decent one in ages.

Is it possible to get a work permit when you're doing something what a Thai can't do? And I mean Thai can't make pies, etc..

Thanks in advance for an answer. wai2.gif

Sorry to disappoint. No, you have the wrong person. I do not deliver food to Sissakhet.

I do, however, know of a Thai lady who makes very good pies. PM me and I will send you her contact details.

  8. A very large percentage of potatoes here originate from seed potatoes from Holland. These were introduced about 50 years ago.

When you see "Holland" potatoes in Makro that is what it refers to. They are not grown in Holland but mostly Northern Thailand and China. I would guess the imported ones are the same.

  9. Poach them first for about 2 hours. Pour the BBQ sauce over them and cook in oven on highest temperature for 15 minutes. The meat will be falling off the bone.

With this method, most of the flavor will be in the poaching liquid and the texture of the meat will be, well, boiled (think mushy).

The other recipes made more sense. Low and slow to break down the connective tissues, making them lovely gelatinous tastiness.

Another possibility would be go even lower and slower. I've tried it in my oven at 110 c and left them for 4-5 hours. Amazing result.

Not at all. At a low temperature poach the ribs will obtain the flavour of the liquid and will retain the texture of pork.

When I poach I use onion, carrot, celery and 5 spice.
