  1. Here's another angle.

My dear wife passed away when our only son (born in Thailand) was quite young.

Initially the advice we had, from a lawyer, was that it was illegal for her to change her surname on marriage to a foreign name.

Hence when son was born his surname was recorded same as mothers Thai surname.

Later, after my wife passed away, I discovered that the initial advice on name change was totally wrong, it is possible.

So when son was mid teens I asked him if he wanted to change his surname to mine. Instant yes.

Because of our overall circumstances we had to have an interview (son and me) with the Interior Ministry. That happened quickly and was quite pleasant, the interview all completed within 1 hour and we got an approval letter within 7 days.

Now to the amphur office to record sons' new surname on the Tabien Baan book, get a new ID card, then new passport etc. Son very proud of his new documents, same name as dad. His first name (chua), very Thai, wasn't changed.

Now the little bit more sticky part. Son got hell at school from his class mates. There were no look-krung kids at his school so he was a first to have a foreign name. But he's robust and he brushed it all aside.

Later at university his first home room teacher told him, in front of the whole class, that his family name was ugly and she told him that she wouldn't teach him until he changed his name.

There were other incidents with other students, different subject areas, where this same teacher was quite abusive and unpleasant.

He ignored her demands to change his family name, and just got on with his studies.

Wow quite a story but I am not surprised on what he had to go though, good to hear he took well.

Been with my future ex-wife for a couple of years and when it comes to the last name I think it will depend on where we live, back home she will take my last name, living in Thailand might be better off keeping her own last name.

  2. A Friend who flew Norwegian Air said it was very good but very restricted on leg room. Does anyone know what the seat pitch is?

http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Norwegian_Air_Shuttle/Norwegian_Air_Shuttle_Boeing_787-8.php Which is pretty standard these days, Lufthansa on their 380's have 31/17

Maybe because I had extremely low expectations but like I said above I liked flying with them I was in 34C which certainly helped.

  3. Flying 3 times a year out of BKK to Europe and US for 5 years this was one of the best experiences I have had when I flew them to CPH earlier this year.

Of the numerous airlines I have tried Norwegian long distance and ANA are the only two where I would book again (always fly in economy).

They have the basic ticket with only hand luggage and nothing else.

For about $80 you can add on, one bag, 2 meals and seat selection.

Dreamliner configuration is 3-3-3 but in the back there are a couple of rows with 2-3-2, felt there were more room than usually on long distance in Y.

Entertainment system excellent with the nice feature that if you want to order something you do it through that system, simply swipe your card at the start of the trip and you pay at the end. I ordered multiple things and they were at my seat within a few minutes.

They had a lot of issues when they started up because of a lack of planes and they had to do a change to an older model with less leg room and it caused delays and cancellations but they seem to have gotten things on the right path..

You get what you pay for and they are a discount airline so a lot add ons you have to be on the look out for but I would no hesitate to fly them long distance again if the price adds up and if the price is the same as SAS, Lufthansa or any of the legacy carriers I think I would choose Norwegian.

  4. The Central bank will not leave the peg and will do anything it takes to keep it, it have been in place for ever it started in the German marks days and a big difference between the Swiss Central Bank and the Danish is that he Swiss Central Bank is partially private owned.

The pressure on the Crown is disappearing and its not even a news story in Denmark anymore, it actually turned out well for the Central bank they made a couple of hundred million USD.

  5. Did it in Ubon a few years back with my ex and kids, 30 min at the office and less than a week later we had the passports via EMS.

I think it were about 1000 baht each, very easy.

  6. Anywhere I can order it in Thailand?

I am talking the salty, strong kind like Fazer mints, or Haribo Piratos the kind we eat in Scandinavia, the salmiak kind.

I found one website but their ordering system is down and they do not answer the phone and the problem getting it from Scandinavia is that its more than a 1000 baht in postage for up to a kilo, I crave it but not that much.

  7. Cuckoos is good for tourists and the food was usually good when I frequented the place.

Just keep in mind what happens/said at Cuckoos does not stay at Cuckoos.

I take it then you have not been there for a while? Why only "...good for tourists..." and not locals? Perhaps you could elaborate on your rather cryptic last sentence.

For me it was for personal reasons, I expect people not go spreading very personal secrets when they tell me its between you and me, then tell me about other peoples very personal secrets, that I really don't want or need to know, why I have not been there in 16 months, while living in SSK all the time and never will set my foot there again, other people have other reasons.

Nice place if passing through town, easy location and decent menu but the pretty much the same food except for the tex mex you can get other places in town.

  8. My brother just got out of Free town Sierra Leone this morning. He said its very serious and a lot more are dying in the bush than are being reported but he is happy to be out of there till January .

Yep could be a million by the end of the year according to some sources.

This thing is serious but until you see 5-10 deaths in US or Western Europe people don't care and by then its to late.

  9. GF talked to a taxi driver yesterday about the situation they have had regarding picking up people there and he said they were allowed back into the airport to pick up passengers anyone have more info regarding this?

  10. She won't give me a bath :( I figured if she made some extra baht from a job I found for her maybe she would give me a bath or two for assisting ;)

In all seriousness I have suggested to her do some farang assiting on a freelance basis, because she knows the bureaucracy, where every office is located and her English is very, very good. I know I have taken advantage of her serveral times, for help with dealing with official issues. (mind out gutter :D)

My girlfriend works for the revenue office and used to work in Sisaket but has transferred to a nearby province, right now she is advicing small businesses on how to properly report their taxes but still visits Sisaket regularly (I am here).

She speaks and writes very good English, communication between her and you would not be an issue, if you are looking for assistance I would be happy to run it by her and ask her if she is interested making a bath or two by assisting you.

I'm always surprised how helpful members on the Isaan forum are. Can't believe that she'll make a bath, or two for SantiSuk, while assisting him. thumbsup.gif

Took me 3 reads to get it.

Her English is better than mine :D
