  1. Mr Naam also likes white port - served cold

    OK,

Maybe I'm slow here but I don't get the reference. White ports are always served cold. I'm sure Khun Naam likes his chicken thoroughly cooked as well, but that doesn't help me infer anything about what you are trying to say.

A meaningless question I guess, but would you care to explain what you meant by the comment? Just inexplicably curious. Are you saying there are people who like to drink a white port warm?

I thought it was common knowledge a white port was served chilled.

    gregb....

we do not have refrig in our thatched huts....

so white port along with several others have to be inexplicably sipped semi-warm or slightly hot....

depending on which time of day.... a friend shows up.... :(

is that quite politically incorrect around my moo-baarn....? :whistling:

  2. Yep,.. got to agree,.. her argument that "non filing for damages proves or indicates no loss suffered is as prepsterous as it is stupid" thats like saying a victim of violence didn't suffer or no crime was perpetrated just because the victim never lodged a complaint or filed a suit for a civil remedy. Lets face it,... in Thailand... and particularly in this case where its taken the government 2 years to show the first signs of restitution, what's the point of making a claim? Your (Thailand's) judicial system is a complete joke. As an ex student at law and paralegal I have first hand experience of both western and Thai courts. Personally we currently have a civil claim in the Thai court for 600,000 baht owed for which we have cash receipts,.. took 2 years for the judge to award refund and damages,... that was 19 months ago... still no payments and it could still roll on for years. There's no accountability or responsibility with your system,.. much like your entire country (mai pen rai!).

My advice to this silly girl is to go and get a proper education,.. overseas! Get some real experience and then come back and look at your wonderful Thai judicial system and the entire political circus from a truly informed and balanced perspective!

"My advice to this silly girl is to go and get a proper education,.. overseas!"

If I have the money to travel overseas, I won't be sitting here learning English via ThaiVisa.

The only other country I have visited is Laos, using a border pass.

You think USA give give me a Visa?

    ree....

u r comical.... and that is super.... besides, i like it... :D

do you really mean what you said.... :ermm:

and do you really say what you mean....?

to arrive at quality children.... it begins even before conception....

it is almost a little too late in the scheme of natural processes.... once a child is born.... :(

any rate.... thailand is heading toward the right direction in getting people

to begin to think about qualitative and intelligent children with verbal and performance scores above 140.... :D

Thailand wastes so much Time and money on this academic 'thinking'.............. 11 years to date that I have personally observed........... nothing new in OBJECTIVE measurements of progress in Education, for example, just more BS of 'tomorrow, tomorrow'.

So sad and so prevalent so often.

brewsta, i agree with you more than 100% ....

they just do not know .... how to do it ....

they are just awaiting for old boys like us and many other educational experts on thaivisa ....

to show them how to do it right the first time.... and how to do it quickly to bring everything around too.... LOL

most thai professionals as well as educators are just way too shy and timid to ask for any kind of assistance whatever....

and we are just too busy and too engaged in whatever we are interested in.... to be bothered with or to offer any sort of help.... to anyone.... except ourselves....:ermm:

    Yawn !!!!!

    Brewsta

Oh, and 'above 140'.......what is this scale please?

stanford binet / weschler, sir/madam. you are already familiar with them, right?

  4. The need for an intelligent educated set of parents is essential, that starts at the grass roots. A decent education system , followed by a dramatic change in society where parents actually look after their own offspring and not farm them out to aged relatives.

To solve the farming out problem would mean an all round increase in salaries/ wages so as to encourage mum or dad to stay home and actually be a parent.

The necessity for a decent maternity leave is needed however as far as I am aware that there are provisions in place for such leave here in Thailand.

However, remember, we create that child between ourselves and our partner, but we don't know what we are going to get, what we get may differ very much from what we expect.

I've seen kids from appalling backgrounds grow and prosper , I've also seen kids from privileged backgrounds sink below the gutter, parenting is dammed hard work. After bringing up, and still bringing up four boys I assure you my wife (who is Thai) and myself are still learning day to day.

Our children have never been farmed out, however family contact has always been a prominent part of their upbringing.

The learned Ajarn who is responsible for the original article indeed needs to actually get in contact with the grass roots parents to see how they exist, then let us see what ideas and theories this high minded isolated from reality intellectual can propound and even put into practice so as to benefit the upcoming generations of Thai's

The whole gamut of parenthood like childhood is a vast unexplored scene of if's and but's, I wish I had done this or not done that. Social pressures financial pressures, indeed a frightening prospect but a damm good ride in my view.

Strange as it may seem most parents irrespective of social levels ,education or location do a pretty good job of bringing up their children in Thailand considering the rigid constraints that bind the majority of people into a form of debt bondage and servitude that binds them to a sometimes dysfunctional family.

Once the state becomes involved that is the downward slope, North Korea, China, many more can be mentioned, my own country the U.K. has all but destroyed childhood and parents and children's rights in its pursuit of political correctness and conformity .

The industry that has sprouted from the caring society in the U.K. has created far more victims than it has or ever will save.Strangely enough that industry is staffed in the main by unmarried and childless overpaid people with no insight into reality

Governments and politicians and intellectuals have no insight nor right in interfering in family matters in the main.

Parenthood is our personal duty and we should be able to understand that which is best for our children.

This is unlike some isolated government mandarin jobsworth whose only concern is, what is my next promotion, and what will my pension be worth when I retire ?

That's an interesting post. Do you have a blog or summat?

I agree that kids here seem to arrive at early adulthood often better adjusted than back home in the UK, even if they lack some basic knowledge about history, geography or algebra. Sweeping generalisation, granted. Sometimes it seems as if it is society itself that is bringing up the child.

Sorry, is that typo? Most Uni Grads here couldnt tie their shoelaces mate while reading their comic books. Sweeping generalisation, granted.

James, I have to agree with you. I'm currently doing my degree here in Thailand and I'm shocked everyday at how childish the students are and suprised out their lack of lifeskills. Growing up in Canada and having experienced a Canadian college, I can say without hesitation that the education system here, or lack there of, is a big problem. University here is to the equivalent of my highschool back home.

Also, something has to be said for the women that end up getting pregnant by accident etc and don't have the option for abortion... a child of such circumstances is just set up for trouble.

volatilekoala' .... i am abbreviating your comments below:

I'm currently doing my degree here in Thailand....

    having experienced a Canadian college,....

I can say without hesitation that the education system here, or lack there of, is a big problem. University here is to the equivalent of my highschool back home....

my first curious question to you is.... which thai university are you attending and which university are you referring to in your comment pls?

for what it is worth.... did you or did you not know that most high school graduates in thailand will need to take qualifying entrance examination into chula or thammasart et al.... which would sort out 'not qualified' students to the ratio of about 1,000 to 1....

which means that for every uniformed university student in chula or thammasart you see walking around.... there are about 1,000 peers who are weeded out.... because their scores are ranked below those uniformed students....

just how many of us would stand the chance of succeeding when competing for 1 in 1,000 chance....? B)

EVEN AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.... my young son, 12 yr old.... has to compete at entrance exam to get in one of the royal family sponsored high schools--CHULAPHORN COLLEGE.... even at high school level, the competition was fierce.... there were some 4,000 students from all over sitting for the entrance exam into the most prestigious regional high school....

do you know what the available spaces were for the year 2010...? there were only 120 spaces allotted for freshmen or first year students.... :(

if my multiplication and division is correct.... it works out to be only the top 3% was admitted this year.... B)

now coming back to your comments.... you can figure it out for yourself, can you not; which educational system among and between u.s., canadian and thai.... is more competitive and difficult....

and if we think thai high schools and universities selective system are tough.... wait till you go to japan, india.... and china.... to mention just a few.... :bah:

volatilekoala, my only intention to post the above is for us to realize that in spite of what we think we know, in spite of what the outward appearance seems to be and in spite of what others say.... the fact is.... it is very tough to get into a good high school and a good university in thailand on students own merits.... despite what every other farang might think or say about thai educational system....

university here is to the equivalent of my (canadian) highschool back home.... now that you know some additional facts about selected thai high schools and univerisities.... won't you say that thai high schools and thai universities are much tougher than canadian high schools and universities....?

more importantly, how many of us when we were back home, have to drive our kids to academic tutorial sessions day in and day out.... AFTER REGULAR SCHOOL CLASSES....

and most importantly, we have to pay all expenses out of our own pockets....? :annoyed:

yes, granted.... many parents do drive their kids and neighbor kids after regular school sessions to soccer, baseball, football, volleyball practices.... but only very very few would consider driving their kids to academic tutorial sessions backhome.... :o

i must be getting really old.... to be saying so much with so little substance.... :D

  5. ... there are numerous others who would like to follow your footstep to see disney land (california) and disney world (florida)....

... or just tell the good folks on Wireless to take a hike and --

    http://park.hongkong...e?name=HomePage

    jazzbo

you know.... from the bottom of my heart....

disney in hongkong is surely in my opinion quite a far cry from disney in lax for some reason.... not to mention disney world for adults in florida....

now.... it is just one man opinion.... B)

well, i think i am quite bias toward lax and fla and six flags.... cause we have season passes.... ;)

  6. sound financial management would suggest that using credit cards for daily living expense is surely not exactly the purpose of credit cards....

anyway that is only a one man opinion....

being able to spend 100k a month for daily living expense and desiring higher credit limit yet to finance more spending for yourself and/or girlfriend just does not make economic sense to me....

well, come to think of it.... if you have sufficient cash flow to pay off each month.... who is to say that it is not economically sound....

when thai banks deem you have sufficient resources to cover the monthly credit limit.... or that your fixed savings far exceed the credit limit you request.... you won't have any problem....

my nephew visited me at vail in 1986, he showed me11 gold cards from different thai banks.... each bank granted him 10mil credit limit....

in 2006, some twenty years later.... he only carry three credit cards.... he said he is older and wiser now.... all the banks want him to do is.... encouraging him to spend more and more....

so he will end up with less and less in his savings each month.... LOL

if you are sure that you have enough financial resources and disposable income to cover the recurring expenditure, perhaps within the limit of 30% of total income...., go and apply for as many credit cards as you wish.... and each bank will surely grant your wish.... without exception....

well, really it is none of my biz.... a penny saved is surely a penny earned, my thaivisa friend.... :jap:

  7. I've been here 10 years, spend all my money here and have given Thailand 3 infants who can point out Thailand and the UK on a globe of the world along with several other countries and the continents. They all speak Thai and English and are doing very well in all subjects at school so maybe Thailand should be giving out free non-immigrant visas and forget about the current clauses to getting one for people such as myself who are happy and willing to start a family here with a Thai husband or wife and actually support that family. Nuff said!

    lady, my supreme lady....

you have all my utmost repect and adulation, maam.... :jap:

may your children grow up and earn many honors including possibly the premiere, the governor, the senator and much much more.... :jap: :jap: :jap:

    gosompoi....

    oh dear me....

do u really have to sell now....?

in most people's estimation, gold will continue to appreciate in value against paper money....

to keep your wife happy.... why not just sell half of it and convert the other half into smaller size bars making sure that the new bullion is properly assayed and stamped 999.99, preferably produced by one of the more reliable firms that you see in the several photos that i attached in prior posts numbered 9 and 10, above.

    good luck.

ok, will repost so you won't have to waste your time searching. and when we do become impossibly wealthy.... then we'll go for the very first one.... ok?

Thanks for all the input, the gold I have is labeled and has been tested to be 99.995 in troy ouce bar form. I purchased the gold about four years ago when the baht started appreciate against the dollar. Since then gold has gone up about 50% and I feel now is good time to convert it to other forms of investment. My only fear is when the gold leaves the house so will my wife's positive attitude at home.

  9. IB is the best solution if you have the money.

Till you have it use Flatex ,RBS, onvist....... up to you. With your amount you will make maybe 6 trades a year, so never mind if you have costs of 5 or 6 Euro each trade. IB 5 Euro..-.Flatex 6,50 Euro or for some XXL free, so only spread.

    For more info BM.

pls explain why poster can only make maybe 6 trades a year....? thx

  10. you guys must be super intelligent to be able to trade profitably and consistently by using only charts provided by your broker....

most thais are also sitting in front of monitors provided by their brokerage firms.... and traded their hearts out.... day in and day out....

my own niece was also doing the same thing in one of the bangkok bank trading rooms....

until she saw the possibility of multiplicity of setups provided by professional signal feeders which cost some 120 usd per month....

since then.... she has been sitting in her own office trading commodities around the globe.... at her own pace and convenience.... :)

i really admire you super intelligent folks being able to make trades from brokerage trading screens provided by your brokers.... :D

however, each lcd monitor will need to display different graphics.

and the signals will be generated from one cpu only.

it will be used for displaying different live charts and graphs as in a brokerage firm.

what is the most economic way to setup pls?

thx kindly for your suggestion and opinion.

  13. If you are on Twitter I recommend following @thanongk the editor of the nation, for an insight into how the Thai establishment think about ideas of free speech and democracy. Here are some of the pearls of wisdom Thanong has shared this week.

"Let's make it clear: Thailand is now suffering from rampant and irresponsible free speech. We don't have enough right speech.

Men are not born equal because each of us has different baramee depending on our accumulated deeds or karma

If we don't understand our strength in Sukhothai, phor phiang model and Buddhist's metta, we'll get confused with Democracy and the like.

Don't be misled by Freedom, Human rights, Democracy, globalisation and other crazy fashionable ideas. They are poisonous and hollow.

I don't believe in free speech. I believe in right speech. And we all should believe in right speech, part of the eight-fold ways."

The principle of free speech is entirely perverted when it has to be modified by "right speech". We would all prefer it if people speak and write responsibly, but it doesn't always happen and we disagree on whether speech is "right" or not. Thanong must congratulate himself that he is editor of a pro-government newspaper in Thailand and not a dissident in China, where the government and the party decide what speech is "right".

Although there must be some constraints on expression in emergency situations, e.g. when it genuinely damages a country's security, safety and prospects in wartime, Thailand is not in that bleak a position, despite the declared "state of emergency" . It is in a state of civil unrest, where measures for safety of citizens are in order, but these do not include repression of views, no matter how hostile they are to the government nor provocative to further civil unrest.

If Thailand's police, military and intelligence services are inadequate to preserve the safety and security of her people, clamping down on dissenting opinion is not going to save them; it just inflames them and provides grounds for criticism and further opposition to the government.

imho, all the components to constrain and restrain unlawful activities are in place....

in addition, the supreme court also bestowed its blessings encouraging the govt to exercise its lawful authority under the constitution to apply the laws, to uphold the constitution and to protect its citizen....

but it is the pm's lone decision.... to act mercifully and compassionately toward the group of law breaking citizen.... B)

from your charts arrangement, eleven different time interval charts for a commodity, it surely appear that you are a very very cautious trader indeed.... perhaps you also have a yearly chart too, to augment those eleven charts, rendering a continuum of price fluctuation.... enabling you to short or long more decisively and reassuringly.... bravo.... :D

for what it is worth.... unless lannarebirth is left-handed, his charts arrangement ought to be in reversed of what he showed us.... for easier optic scan to arrive at a quicker decision to take advantage of earlier entry or exit position.... e.g. yearly, quarterly, monthly, daily, 60, 30, 15, 5, 1.... :P

why couldn't you post your trading positions, not necessarily the trading results, more frequently for every one to enjoy.... debate.... and salivate after.... :)

This is what I'd say is wrong with the chart, for my use anyway. Your off chart studies take up more screen space than does the price chart.... Better IMO to use dissimilar inputs which if all give a buy signal, it proves more reliable. I can't get my screen capture gizmo to show my whole setup but I'll show you what I mean using some of the charts on my screen Very ST buy signal at 1515 yesterday using three different methodologies.

an interesting combination of charts using different time frames.... to arrive at.... and to confirm.... a decision.

Well, in this particular case I had the SPX overhead gapfill to consider as well and the 60 min 200 ma both acting as magnets.

the one minute time frame is reputedly used exclusively by scalpers and daytraders and the likes....

were you per chance scalping or daytrading at that moment in time too?

It did start out as a daytrade but the target wasn't hit, so it's a 2 day trade. I have an array of 1,5,10,15,30,45,60 and 120 min chart information provided in a single chart by way of programming language. So, I don't just trade off a one minute chart. I generally know what is going on with the daily weekly and monthly as well.

the signal provider of your charts is one of the more expensive firms in the market. it costs around 120 usd (?) for REAL TIME monthly basic service just for signal services alone; as i recall.

most free quote service providers use DELAYED SIGNAL, which could be some 20 minutes delayed which means the quoted price posted on screen is in reality come and gone some 20 minutes ago....

I think its about $1400 year (cheaper by the year) including exchane feeds. I use Esignal rather than Tradestation, which would be free for me because it is Esignals programming language that my software is written in.

some thirty years ago, Financial News Network (anyone remembers sue, Yes, I think she added no value to the broadcasts I ever saw her in. bollinger I use his bands forreversals on things like VIX if it closes outside the band. and ron I hear Ron rose to his greatest level of incompetence and blew up a hedge fund. --the analysts?) provided free quotes (20 min delay) running at the bottom of its screen. many traders then.... used those running numbers to formulate their trades.... at the time only brokerage firms could afford to have a quote line.... we were asked to pay some 5,000 usd to just LEASE the ugly square box for a month.... :(

hunt brothers were alive and well.... silver was around 4 usd and went it was cornered peaking around 9 usd/oz by the hunt brothers, jealous brokers and brokerage houses were becoming unglued... federal investigation and grand jury were summoned....:o i still remembered buying gold eagle pieces at around 35.25 usd/oz and i was then paid 0.65 usd/per hour doing roofing under hot michigan summer sun....

well.... it did help finance my higher education.... most worked the whole summer vacation so they could save enough to go to school in the fall, winter and spring semesters.... those were the happiest days.... and a burger was only 25 cents then....

to bring everything up to date, sue (my idol :)) is now with cnbc.... and bollinger is now a master of his own ship.... many of us including ZORRO1 are using his creation--the upper bollinger band to start selling the market and unloading the longs.... B) for some reasons, i do not come across ron often nowadays.... he could have branched out and owned his own company as well....

thx much everyone for putting up with my nostalgic ranting....

just take your 1 kilo gold in any shape or form.... to any one of the gold shops around JAOW-WA-RARGE....

after their authentication and acid test....

you'll be offered a price.... if you don't like their offers.... just thank them and go on to the second, third, fourth shop....

by then you should have a pretty good idea of how much gold is in your possession and how much is it worth that particular day....

good luck and have fun.... getting your cash.... nowadays, not too many people can get their hands on 1 kilogram of pure gold.... congrats.... :jap:

  16. Well, I'm certainly no Red-shirt fan, but this is a disturbing development. However, I will point out that this board was shut down voluntarily by it's owners, not by direct action of the government. I also wonder a bit about the timing. How long has it been since the bank accounts of the 83 Red financial supporters were frozen?

    what an observation, indeed.

    many cheers to you....:D

  17. Here's a look at where the S & P is today: 31% below the peak

33 months ago, at about the same level it first hit 12 years ago

taking your chart and explanation into consideration....

one should also consider the purchasing power of paper money 12 yr ago then.... and now the power of paper money differs significantly....

also 12 yr ago, the price of gold was around 295 usd per troy ounce.... in comparison to today's price of around 1,200 usd/oz....

which could be interpreted as having the purchasing power of only 25% of 12 yr ago.... sad isn't it?

you may interpolate however which way you prefer....

    cheers and happy trading everyone....

  18. animatic

thx much.... you said it much more eloquently than i ever could.... :jap:

the yellow shirts, PAD, and its affiliates have been using tv and newspapers to launch criticism of the govt and its ministries day in and day out....

and they are not required to shutdown....

    what is the difference then?

i also listen to redshirt station when it was on air....

the differences that i can clearly see is....

the redshirts mostly criticised and accused govt and its members without adequate facts.... each and everyone of the announcers used everything they could imagine.... to attack

which differs greatly from the yellow shirts who used facts and figures mixed in with some humor to criticize the elites....

the redshirt leader, jatuporn, has been so very negative in his outlook in life as well as in his political career.... that it is pathetic....

imho, their political parties are not going to gain any more political stronghold in the upcoming election.... very sad.... :(

This is the basic point those that stick to valid critique are left to tell the gov. what they think.

Those that attack using lies and without factual basis, get shut down.

Those that are very harsh with the government but have a real basis for saying it, are still saying it,

but those say anything regardless of reality if they think it might harm their opponents

or the monarchy as an institution are getting shut down.

A free press doesn't mean freedom to blatantly lie to gain power.

  19. i am empathetic with you all.... and there is yet another sad story along this line....

also around 2005, a wealthy thai lady of 42 yr of age applied for tourist visa to usa together with her two adolescents....

the interviewer told her everything looked good and to come back next wednesday to pick up their passports and visa....

the following wednesday at the same interviewing window.... another interviewer told the thai lady to just wait a minute.... she needed to make the final verification regarding her ownership of restaurants, resorts et al....

    --------

the audio tape at one of her offices revealed the following conversation in thai:

hello, good morning. we are an american tour company based in bangkok. we like to tentatively book 20 rooms at your resort.... may i speak with the owner please?

THE OWNER IS NOT IN THE OFFICE RIGHT NOW, SORRY.

what is the name of the owner please?

    HER NAME IS MADAM DAENG.

    where is madam daeng please?

OH, MADAM IS NOW IN BANGKOK GETTING HER VISA TO GO TO AMERICA WITH HER AMERICAN FAN.

really, does madam daeng has an american fan already?

YES, HE IS BIG AND TALL.

oh, really. madam did not mention anything about her american husband. how do you know so much?

OH, I WORKED HERE IN THE MAIN OFFICE FOR MADAM FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW. I KNOW EVERYTHING.

do you know if ms. tape-ti-dar is available. may i speak with her please?

    WHO?

ms. tape-ti-dar, the owner, madam daeng's older sister?

NO, SORRY. THERE IS NO MS. TAPE-TI-DAR HERE.

are you sure, madam has no sister by the name of tape-ti-dar?

I AM VERY SURE, I KNOW EVERYONE IN MADAM'S FAMILY. MADAM'S SISTER IS TUMLUNG.

who is going to take care of the resort, when madam is in america for 3 months?

I AM IN CHARGE, IF YOU NEED ANYTHING, YOU CAN CALL ME.

thank you very much for your information, you are very helpful. thank you very much.

    -------

half an hour later, back to the same window.

madam daeng, we are very sorry that we are unable to issue you your tourist visa.

your disclosure that your sister's is tape-ti-dar.... is not true.

your statement that ms tape-ti-dar will be looking over your property is also false.

and you did not mention that you already have an american hasband....

the thai applicant was trying to explain.

the interview said sternly, this case is closed.

you may reapply fresh if you like. there is nothing more that i can do for you at the moment.

    -----------------

she was trying to explain that tape-ti-dar is her older sister's legal thai name and that her older sister's thai nickname is p-tumlung.

and that she herself is not at all married yet....

    ------------------

her letter to the ambassador was not responded to. end of story.

they went on a global tour skipping u.s. of a.....

  20. the yellow shirts, PAD, and its affiliates have been using tv and newspapers to launch criticism of the govt and its ministries day in and day out....

and they are not required to shutdown....

    what is the difference then?

i also listen to redshirt station when it was on air....

the differences that i can clearly see is....

the redshirts mostly criticised and accused govt and its members without adequate facts.... each and everyone of the announcers used everything they could imagine.... to attack

which differs greatly from the yellow shirts who used facts and figures mixed in with some humor to criticize the elites....

the redshirt leader, jatuporn, has been so very negative in his outlook in life as well as in his political career.... that it is pathetic....

imho, their political parties are not going to gain any more political stronghold in the upcoming election.... very sad.... :(
