Credit unions are the only semi ethical banks remaining and they too are being corrupted.

credit unions are trying hard to keep the operating cost down to bare minimum.... but the big banks are pushing hard to levy same treatment and charge toward credit unions....

if you have time you can read the attached which is urgently sent to supporters and members seeking assistance to send request to congressmen et al.... to help keep all credit unions out of the big banks influences and madness....

you too can help, if you wish.... by sending ready formed email to representatives and congressmen as mentioned in the referenced text.

    Dear Credit Union Supporter,

You are receiving this message because our records show you have not yet taken action, and we need your support! To date, over 60,000 letters have been sent from Connect for the Cause!

Credit unions remain involved in a major grassroots campaign to protect the use of your debit cards. The U.S. Senate has passed the Restoring American Financial Stability Act which included the "Durbin-Interchange Fee Amendment." This issue is now relevant and remains a top priority to each and every Member of Congress (both Senators and Representatives).

    Issue

The "Durbin-Interchange Fee Amendment" was not intended to harm credit unions and small financial institutions. However, the amendment remains extremely harmful to credit union members who use debit cards.

    Specifically this amendment:

1 - Requires the Federal Reserve to prescribe pre-determined interchange fees that apply to debit payment cards. Rates will only apply to financial institutions above $10 billion in assets. However, through various loop-holes in the amendment rates will apply to credit unions, thus reversing the intent of this "exemption".

2 - Omits data security or fraud costs from being factored in to these prescribed rates that the Federal Reserve will eventually set.

3 - Excludes an "honor all cards" rule, which prevents merchants and retailers from discriminating a financial institution’s debit card from another. Under this section, retailers and merchants will be allowed to select which debit cards they prefer, and deny acceptance of others.

    Goal/Action Needed

64 Senators voted in favor of the Durbin Amendment. They did so under the assumption that credit unions and small institutions would be omitted from the negative impacts. Unfortunately, the situation is the exact opposite.

  2. i am going to apply for an aeon card....

wonder why it can afford to be so generous with farangs....

while multitude of other financial institutions want to charge us more.... if they can only figure out how to do it.... and probably how often to do it.... before we would revolt....bah.gif

    .

"sure enough 150 charge, shame that, will have to bring a few hundred grand over and put in my thai bank"

Your other option is to use AEON ATMs - they do not add the 150 Baht Thai ATM usury fee.

    Pattaya locations are:

Tesco - North Pattaya Rd. ( 2 AEON ATMs )

Carrefour - 1st floor in the corridor leading to the toilets.

Home-Works - next to Big-C South on Sukumvit just south of Pattaya Tai Rd.

Thanks, thats all the information i was looking for on this thread

British national Jeff Savage lies on the ground in a show of distress after arriving at Pathumwan Municipal court in Bangkok June 10, 2010.

Savage and Purcell appeared at the Thai court after they were accused of violating emergency decree during anti-government protests last month. REUTERS

    wonderfully agonizing sequences....

how on earth did u ever sneak these pix out....?

i for one appreciated seeing these pix on thaivisa....

    many thx JLester

    Your are very welcome. :)

As to how I was able to sneak these pix out, first I crept up very quietly and waited for several heart-stopping moments. When I thought there was a brief opening, I lunged out and copied them off the Reuters news site and then quickly tucked them into my computer's memory and ran off. When I finally caught my breath, I retrieved them from the memory and quite stealthily posted them here when I thought the coast was clear. All in all, a very dangerous operation, but I thought the outcome was well worth the extreme risk.

    just curious all the more....

you said you do not live in thailand but that you have had long holidays in thailand....

by the virtue of your own statement.... you really ought to disqualify yourself from making such erroneous observation and statement regarding thailand....

secondly, many of us, not only do feel but also do know, that we become part of thai people, society and thailand....

we do know that we are accepted.... because we work among them daily, we share their joy and sorrow, especially when there are problems around....

they come to help us.... on their own without being asked.... and vice versa....

the more serious question is.... are we, coming from a much more advanced society and country, accepting them as they are.... very different from us in terms of life style, daily living practices and dietaries....?

just as long as we, farangs, do not try to impose our life style and value onto the local thais.... there should be no problem....

well, perhaps, because i am sort of an optimistic outlook person.... accepting everyone as is.... very similar to believing that everyone is innocent.... until proven guilty....

therefore, perhaps, the local can accept me more readily than some other farangs who are more engaged in their own life style and work.... and more interested in enjoying 'farang things' and farang cultural enjoyment and practices.... which i see nothing wrong with that either--to enjoy, practise and entertain whatever one wishes to pursue in foreign countries....

but then one oughts not complain.... if and when the locals do not approve of our life style, way of life and daily practices....

i really do not maliciously single you out.... neither do i agree with the other multitude of expressive exposition either....

and furthermore, i am certain that there might be several others who do not agree with me either.... sad.gif

more importantly.... we are very happy here--living among the thais, working with them and among them, sharing our joy and sorrow with them and vice versa....

and hopefully, during your next trip to thailand.... you'll find more joy and happiness and whatever you are seeking in your personal quest.... alright?

wishing you the very best in life.... cheers.... jap.gif

it is so unfair for a farang to say that....

Thailand being the kind of country it is probably will not do this and slap

a heavy fine towards him or seize (steal more accurately) any assets or money

    he has in Thailand.

several hundred other farangs and myself who live here for several decades.... do not agree with your statement nor your line of thought at all....

on the contrary.... we do believe that a small number of citizen totaling some 100,000 to 200,000

can not be a true representative sample of the 60,000,000 population....

the redshirts were just a small number....

more importantly, from our experiences, thailand and its thai citizen are very much like the u.s. of some 40 years ago.... where hospitality still prevails over hostility like what we experienced recently in bangkok....

many of us would not be around thailand.... if we do not feel safe and fair.... and democratic enough for us.... to live a decent life that we choose for ourselves....

but perhaps for you.... it could be a different story.... that you could be living here against your will.... or something to that sort of thing.... blink.gif

It would be a good move by Thailand just to deport this chap and black

list him from entering Thailand ever again. This would be a good sign that

Thailand will not accept foriegners coming to Thailand to start trouble but

will be fair and make sure he is allowed to leave without being fleeced.

Thailand being the kind of country it is probably will not do this and slap

a heavy fine towards him or seize (steal more accurately) any assets or money

    he has in Thailand.

Why is it unfair to say that. Unless you have been walking around

Thailand with buffalo shit in your eyes you will see that Thailand is

not particularly fair. That is not just my thoughts, ask so many Thai's

    what they think aswell.

I do not live in Thailand as I would not want to live in a country where

you will never be accepted into society (no matter what you choose to

believe). I have had many long holidays to Thailand and had fun but

could not see myself living there.

I notice you pick my quote as being unfair, what about other people

that say he should be treated badly or spend 20 years in jail. Makes

me sick to think a lot of you actually come from the same country as

this Jeff Savage goon. He has been idiotic but that is about it.

  9. It seems (according to several senior politicians ive recently heard speaking) that all major economies are looking at exporting more goods to narrow huge trade deficits, and in Britains case theyre looking to create a notable manufacturing base to get themselves out the current mess and to have a more balanced economy.

My thinking is the only way to do this is for such nations to pressure/tell so called emerging economies such as Thailand China etc.. into more equal trade agreements, at the moment its pretty much a case of these nations sell to us with no or minimal tarrifs whereas everything western made imported by Asian nations is taxed to the hilt.

So if western economies are to succeed in exporting more, and creating larger manufacting bases as their politicians are imminently about to try and implement (refering to the UK), wont this shift the balance of economic power thats shifted east, move back to the west, thus affecting jobs in a major way in Thailand, and we'll go back to the status quo.

It seems as if this is the only way western economies can go as its now widely accepted we cant just rely on the service sector and finance alone to create jobs.

ALL IS BUT A PIPE-DREAM, i am afraid....

just how do the advanced industrailization nations compete with the eastern countries in terms of low cost labour among several other imminent life style and ways of living difference factors....?

we all and our countries are just too expensive to maintain.... laugh.gif

the gwai-low--yes that means farangs.... imho, other than advanced skills and technologies.... what can we offer to the east....?

who in the right mind set would be willing to pay 450 usd per hour, yes you read it right.... 450.00 usd per hour, in the eastern countries....?

imho.... the only way that we could maintain any edge is to.... own and operate the various kind of businesses in different localities and countries....

which means.... going out of our ways.... to invest in the selected future of some of these countries....

imho.... there is just NO WAY under the present mindset and economic condition.... that we can profitably compete with the productivity and low labour cost, among other factors, of these emerging countries....

at present.... what we can do best is.... to dream on fellow gwai-low....

on the other side of the coin.... would i like to see these emerging countries becoming even more productive and efficient.... thus improving their living conditions and standards of living.... ABSOLUTELY AND RESOUNDINGLY AFFIRMATIVE.... biggrin.gif

    post-25601-022203800 1275992504_thumb.pn

If one looks at all gaps over the last 20 years they have all been filled. If you trade by gapping you wouldnt have made a bean :)

we trade gaps with certain predefined preconditions, using gap fills as you mentioned....

also using the axiom that all gaps are eventually filled theory....

we trade both shorts and longs.... depending on the 3-6 mos range....

there are profits to be made.... still

the average gain/loss ratio, since 1992 has been 68% to 32% (futures market--gold, crude, currencies et al)....

but gap trading does not happen every day though.... it has been hair raising at times.... annoyed.gif

  11. most would have a checking acct in the old country....

can you not write out checks to pay for bills, just wonder.

my recurring payment are all deducted thru checking.... so i won't have to write out any check....

could such arrangement be made with your bank?

i believe any thai bank, preferably bangkok bank, would issue you a cashier check or money order....

    for whatever reason.... good luck

  13. When in Rome do as the Italians do.

    Get a local bank.

If cost is really THAT much of an issue, try this:-

Go and find 9 friends (it can be more or less, this is not prescriptive) from your home country.

All open accounts with Kasikorn Bank.

    Appoint one trusted leader.

Monthly (or whatever period suits you) all transfer your stipend to the bank account of your trusted leader (if UK, use Halifax Bank).

Trusted leader garners the other 9 stipends and (together with his own allowance) transfers the total amount (in the home currency) to his Kasikorn Bank.

He then distributes the individual Baht equivalents (less cost of SWIFT transfer) to the 9 friends, using K Cyber Banking (free of charge to other K Bank accounts).

I can appreciate that some cynics may recognise a potential risk in this methodology.

I volunteer myself as 'trusted leader' if anyone wants to give this a go.

    dear cardholder:

....I volunteer myself as 'trusted leader' if anyone wants to give this a go.

....so you wanna be the trusted leader....?

let us count the ways.... cool.gif

  14. .

"The exchange rate is 3% in most cases and now the 150 Baht fee."

Not true if using a Debit Card. What you say is true of Credit Cards, but not Debit Cards. My Debit card, as well as most others, receive the premium low IER exchange rate and *NO* additional charges, 3% or otherwise.

In addition, there are several Debit Cards from the U.S., such as E-Trade, Schwab, and a few others who reimburse the 150 Baht fee.

As I said, this subject was discussed at length in an earlier thread and what I've reported is well documented.

    .

    surfrider....

i have both cc and dc from u.s. banks....

whenever they were used to withdraw cash.... the statement always showed the 2% surcharge.... regardless whether it was a debit card or a credit card....

even when either or both cards were tended at thailand hospitals.... each thai bank that advanced the cash to the hospital.... still charged the 2% surcharge....bah.gif

i was so shocked in the beginning.... but now i just muttered some farang expletives.... under my breath....biggrin.gif

i figure.... it is better to keep my ulcer under control.... cool.gif

  15. bangkok bank is one of my favorite banking facilities....

last week, one of the officers SHAMELESSLY instructed a FARANG customer that....

you can not withdraw 30k with one withdrawal now....

you need to do it twice....

which ultimately it means..... doubling bkk bank profit another 100%.... from 150 to 300 thb.... SHAME SHAME SHAME.... :D:)

  16. Whilst up dating my <snip> Bank account at my local branch in Chalong, Phuket I was shocked to find out that all my funds, 280,000 Baht had been stolen out of it.

This happened on the 3rd March, and since then following masses of communications with this Bank they are still refusing to credit my account with these stolen funds.

To date I have followed all the correct steps and procedures of reporting this theft to the main Police Station in Phuket town, along with the main Police Station in Pattaya where these stolen funds were withdrawn.

At the moment I'm trying to get a hold of their Terms and Conditions in Thai and English, and I also believe there is a Thai banking act that has a code of conduct over such matters.

After 3 months I am becoming quite disheartened, so if there's anyone out there, or knows of such a case, I would be most grateful to hear about it please.

    poster....

there are many thaivisa members who can give you some assistance.... but your acct of info is so short of facts and details....

if you need further assistance.... spell out important details....

280k thb is not a small sum to easily forgotton either by you or by any banking system....

atm does have eyes on each transaction.... yours is no exception....

so what is the real story behind it all....? :)

  17. I don't get it. He goes to the room while the tourist is out and the management let him in the room on his own? :D

management often will, they dont realize volunteer police dont have that power, or maybe vtp do, Im not sure, but the lady will go with him and they will claim the guy stole something or owes her money sort of line

    NO, NO WAY!

THAT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH A CLAIM....

    FOR ANYONE .... :D

TO GAIN ACCESS TO A ROOM OCCUPIED BY A REGISTERED GUEST....

next time.... come up with something better.... :)

    a proprietor

  18. kerryk

that all depends on how much is in your balance....

if you are like most of us.... pretty much broke most of the time....

the road to asking for any favor is pretty much long and uphill.... :D

however, if you are like my neighbors who always maintain a 9 digit savings with the bank....

you probably won't have to lift your finger....

just as soon as you walk thru the door, the manager will usher you into his office and grant whatever you wish, whenever you wish....

yes, for most of us.... we just stand in line and enjoy those pretty cashiers servicing everyone....

and when it comes our turn.... we can tell what our transaction will be.... and if the comp is not down.... you'll probably get your wishes and your new book or whatever....

yes, you do need your identical i.d. and paper with you to ascertain your important self.... to the satisfaction of that person.... :)

  19. with such abundancy of language experts in thailand....

it is no wonder that most thai students still could speak english....

the problem is just that.... most farangs, especially tourists, just could not quite comprehend what most thai students as well as their thai english teachers are trying to convey.... :)

  20. normall if a minimum order is 500, and supposedly at that minimum quantity, each piece would cost 10 thb....

if you only desire to order only 100 which as far as their product overhead and cost are concerned and

in order for them to breakeven with some profit....

they would probably charge you something in the neighborhood of 13 thb per piece....

or do you think that your price of 13 thb per is too high for you....?

    best wishes and cheers nakachalet

That's the funny thing- we've spoken to some of the biggest manufacturers and told them we'd be will to pay more for a smaller quantity, but thus far we've been unable to find a company that wants our business.

We're willing to pay as much as 50 Baht/box.

We've spoken to the following companies:

    Thai Cardboard

    Thai Carton

    Complete Packaging

    Ekarach Paper

    Bangkok Package Industry

    Intergreen Group

A couple said they'd get back to us and never did. The rest said they require a minimum order of 500 or more boxes... Period...

So, if anyone has a recommendation for another company we should try we'd be most grateful for a referral.

    Thank you!

    hi

you really ought to spell out all your specs.... regarding your box....

    1-which material?

2-what is the actual contents and wt of contents, so as to estimate crushing threshold?

    3-what size and dimension required?

    4-what color?

    5-do u have a diagram?

    6-own pickup or delivery?

7-which party to pay for initial setup and tooling? et cetera

pls try to spell out everything that you expect the finished product to look like and be like.... ok?

  21. Do you guys give a tip?

And how much is normal? If the massage cost 200 bath.

It really depends how 'happy' you were when you finished. Going rate is anywhere (depending on the level of happiness) from 500 - 1500, apparently.

alright.... i know you are very generous....

when the massage cost 200 thb and you tip the lady 500 - 1500....?

is the excess for massage.... or something extra and beyond?

last year, i tipped a waitress in haadyai with a crisp 100 usd....

just 'cause.... she tended to me and my friend with every attention in dining....

every time she approached us.... she looked straight into our eyes and asked.... what do you wish sir/madam....?

we were extremely levitated for this unusual dining experience in haadyai.... :)
