  1. peacefulwarrior dear....

it is just apparent just now....

why jatupon and friends refused to grant you the supreme opportunity to speak at their podium.... :)

you would surely destroy completely what they are trying not to say or do.... :D

if you ever become any more disenchanted with thailand and its majority of the 66+ million people which

is rightfully referenced to as the true majority as opposed to the redshirts of some 100,000 supporters....

which as much as the misplaced and misguided dr weng likes to believe and to claim the number to be in excess

    of 20 mil....

if ever you ever come to that point of i can not take it anymore....

no one in the kingdom would hold you hostage in this land of plenty....

like every farang in thailand.... each has the ultimate option.... to stay and obey.... or otherwise.... :D

hope your sojour in thailand henceforth.... will be much happier like so many of us.... otherwise, why be so burdened in thailand, there are plenty of other selections out there....

singapore for example.... remember 'michael'.... who was canned for much less offense....

good luck to you friend.... cheers :D

    That you can get:

    1. Stop fooling the people playing this fake left-right paradigm, it's not football but a country!

    2. Tell the NWO to F themselves and stop the 'war of terror' Agenda they present to the public

    3. Get Abhisit out, the liar Nr.1 : one day "We don't use live ammunition" people die; next day "Now we use live ammo" !?!

    4. Let the elites pay more than 150 Baht for their maids a day or better tax them!

    5. Being G20 state obviously you have to play stuff like that on the road to more surveillance, ppl know that

    6. Commemorate the death of the 88 people, mostly unarmed! and not the death of a fkn shopping mall

    7. Get the rich ones and their 150 Baht ice-cram eating, iPhone twittering brats some education that teaches real values, like the life of others and not just how to wring out the next bunch of slave laborers and illegal immigrants which built BKK!

    8. Get rid of the military rulers which actually via commands of their rich friends hold the country in their grip.

    9. Tell the cyber-police to go and think a moment if they really want China style ruler-ship and 1984 happen to THEM.

    10. Ask the real questions, like why are the Democrats not yet dissolved for their illegal party contributions? 236m Bt.?!?

    11. Stop media censorship and so called ISA, curfew B$, this is not North Korea or China.

Get a life and move out of those control grid Moloch's like Bangkok. City of Angels and Demons...

    Start thinking for yourselves.

    All the best,

may Thailand reconcile and the people live in peace together, sharing the wealth of this beautiful, rich country!

  2. .... but Thailand is still for Thai people, not for farang. You can try to fit in more, learn to speak some Thai and don't try to act superior...

It's sad but I basically agree with this.

As a farang you can somewhat integrate into Thai society if you keep at it for many years, learn the language, act in a certain way and so forth. But one should never, ever make the mistake of thinking that they are part of Thai society because that's just not really possible. At best a farang will be seen as some sort of benign oddity, but he/she will always be 'farang'.

there have been so many different posts saying that:

don't think for a minute.... don't make the mistake of thinking.... that farangs can become part of the thai society....

imho.... imh experiences... farangs can be accepted into thai societies.... if farangs can:

    learn to speak the language reasonably;

    learn to interact with locals appropriately, and respect their individual differences;

    learn to allow for personal spaces and freedom between and among locals;

    learn to render plenty of various kinds of help to locals, whenever possible;

    say what you mean.... and mean what you say, and;

most importantly, set a good daily human example (not including superiority complex) that

others can see, can appreciate and can model our good daily life example....

the above are, i believe, some major factors that help many farangs more easily become integrated and assimilated into thai society...

i am certain, there are other farangs who have plenty to say.... about the above as well....

with all due respect.... cheers.... :)

  3. I also don't expect much, but it is certainly a much needed thing. Abhisit has been able to do quite a lot legislation-wise. Maybe this is something they can do after they are back in power, after the next election.

apisit and the democratic party as a whole need to start the action of cleaning up the police heads and military heads NOW.... certainly the action required is.... NOW

military chief, anupong, very much like the four northern governors failing to take action against the reds and action to protect govt houses, needs to be replaced and relocated IMMEDIATELY for his role of inactivity during the crises.... he really can not be left untouched until his retirement next few months.... he needs to be reprimanded promptly and severely NOW....

anupong is casting a very bad example for other dept heads.... for assuming that apisit is too much of a gentleman.... to take any drastic actions.... :D

for a moment i was ranting like i were apisit.... :)

Urr Mr Fine Gold. Where did you get all that gold?

When the police force fine someone or take a bribe, where does the majority of the money end up? certainly not in the policeman's pocket? certainly not in the police force?

    democrat....

other less obvious response is in your pm.... :D

    ok.... you asked for it....

when a bribe is taken.... almost always.... it is unequally shared up the ladder....

some years back.... it was almost an unwritten rule.... that if a junior officer did not fulfil his unannounced quota....

his chances of promotion would surely be diminishing.... this corrupted practice permeated from customs to traffic cops....

like flip wilson used to say some decade ago (LOL).... it is the devil that makes me say it.... how many do recall flip....?

  4. The Thai police are a bunch of criminals in uniform. Corruption is near-universal, and those who refuse to participate in corruption never rise to any rank of importance, so any good ones are unable to do much anyway.

They have zero oversight, and apart from other corrupt cops, zero accountability.

Weak judges and toady lawyers normally kow-tow to the cops. Foreign embassies recognise the problem, but are powerless to do anything, and basically only care about a case if it is in the newspapers back home.

Pray that you never appear on their radar scope, because there is no help coming if you do.

If you're lucky, your embassy will send you sandwiches in jail.

And despite what some people think they are not incompetent, they are extremely competent at what they do. Unfortunately one of the things they do is extort money from the people they are meant to be serving.

If one day the Thai in the street decided that he had enough of the corruption, set aside the mai pen rai attitude and actually tried to complain, who can he complain to?

The majority of Thais seem to be content with the system they have - otherwise they would complain more?

i won't say thais are content with the corrupt practices and systems....

rather most just do not know what to do.... nor how to cause the change....

the good that surfaces from the illegal demonstration is.... now most thais know....

if they band together.... they can affect some changes, even at the govt level....

  5. OR YOU CAN JUST RESPECT THE LAW AND PAY ZERO !!!!

For the record - I am here in Phuket.. The other evening around 4pm I was walking home when a policeman beckoned me towards him. He asked where I was going - told me to get on his bike and drove me to my front door. He did not want any money. The next evening I saw him at an eatery, we shook hands and I have a photo with him off-duty. The reason ? mmmm I guess I gave him respect every day when I passed him by doing his job... What goes around comes around.. I have been here one month and all I have ever got is respect and courtesy, low prices, same as the Thais, given motorbikes to lend for free and cars too. Shared cigarettes, bought beers...What is up with everyone on here ???? Don't you know how to make FRIENDS ????

I have a suggestions for you. Rent a car or motorcycle. Take a driving/riding tour around the country for a month or two. Report back about how well you respected the traffic laws, and then report about may many traffic fines you paid.

Paying fines in Thailand has nothing to do with obeying the law. It is simply a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, particularly with regard to traffic offences.

it is really not that bad.... waytoomuchcoffee

driving cross country from burmese border to sadow border several times....

as mdaspinall described.... rarely encountered traffic cops or traffic cop problems....

mostly driving around 90-110, occasionally sneaked in a 120 when the hwy #4 is straight and clear....

my significant other was doing 120 and was flagged.... we chose to pay the official fine with proper receipt and all.... :)

as others already stated.... if we abide by the rules, regardless of how ridiculous those rules might seem to us....,

there won't be too many groups of professional who could take advantages or intimidate us.... :D

  6. I also don't expect much, but it is certainly a much needed thing. Abhisit has been able to do quite a lot legislation-wise. Maybe this is something they can do after they are back in power, after the next election.

"So they've got nothing but his statements to make these accusations with?* How come they're so slipshod? Look, if we say we hate murderers, traitors, and people with blood on their hands, and then we go and shoot them in the head and they die, won't we be screwed? Wouldn't we then be the ones being accused of murder, even if we didn't do it, though we really, really, really wanted to?"

What do you think of changing your translations of เราจะเอา สไนเปอร์ไปยิงหัวมัน a little bit. Instead of "and then we go and shoot them in the head and they die," how about, "and then we get a sniper to shoot them in the head." That would then emphasize the theme of words verse actions a little more clearly. It would also connect to the sentence ทั้งๆที่เราไม่ได้ฆ่ามัน (because the sniper did).

    css....

yours surely renders the context more exact and meaningful.... :)

  8. gaccha....

....Also, what does this phrase mean:

เกิดตายไป. Born and die and go somewhere

    Please help...

กิดตายไป.... this phrase should be translated to mean.... should he/she/it die (pass away, decease, perish....)

the word most politically correct would prefer to use in place of the word ตาย.... is.... มือันเป็นไป.... :)

    cheers....

  9. "เจฟฟ์ซาเวจ"ปฎิเสธไม่ได้วางเพลิงเวิล์ดเทรด"

Jeff Savage could not deny (that) he set fire to the World Trade (Center).

    " . . . ปฎิเสธไม่ได้ว่า . . . " is a frequent phrase meaning, "(he) could not deny that . . . "

If it were not a headline, almost certainly the phrase would contain the word ว่า or maybe it is just a typo in the Internet version.

    Let's try this one:

    "นายเจฟฟ์ยอมรับว่า เขาอยู่ในวีดีโอดังกล่าวจริง แต่ตอนที่พูดเรื่องเหล่านั้นเป็นช่วงที่เขากำลังเครียด และมีอารมณ์ เขาถูกบีบให้เครียดจัดเพราะเกิดเหตุซุ่มยิงผู้คน"

Here, "มีอารมณ์" means "to be in an emotional state". Let's try the whole statement:

"Mr. Jeff Savage admitted that it was indeed he who was shown in the video, but when he make his (inflammatory) statement he was in a state of high emotion. He was under a lot of pressure and tension because snipers were shooting people."

    What do you think?

    --------

    davidhouston.... sorry

"เจฟฟ์ซาเวจ"ปฎิเสธไม่ได้วางเพลิงเวิล์ดเทรด" Jeff Savage could not deny (that) he set fire to the World Trade (Center).

the above english translation though well intended is INCORRECT....

    --------

the thai language has its numerous inconsistent peculiarities--stringing words together-which if those words are separated at different words, will render its context completely different.... one reason why thai politics, writing and agreement are so confounding at times....

"เจฟฟ์ซาเวจ"ปฎิเสธไม่ได้วางเพลิงเวิล์ดเทรด" Jeff Savage denied that he set fire to WTC....

"เจฟฟ์ ซาเวจ"ปฎิเสธ ^ ไม่ได้วางเพลิงเวิล์ดเทรด" according to thai tradition and custom.... the separation of words should be at the mark ^ as shown.

if my translation is incorrect.... i will be glad to relearn.... :)

  10. As above. There is really no recourse other than a lawsuit which will cost probably mopre than it is worth in both money and aggravation (and which a foreigner is unlikely to win).

    hi sheryl

a foreigner can win if he/she has a justifiable cause and reason....

even in a murder case.... farang can still win....

if you like.... you can go back and read the guilty verdict on a murder case in ranong, last year....

as for the cosmetics problem.... try to get an influrential thai to accompany you.... to negotiate for a refund of some sort....

or lithigate.... to get your satisfaction of sort.... <not a very good advice, shame on myself....>

  11. thebayareabeast' date='2010-05-25 17:42:30' post='3641547'

These people are unbelievable man. Its no wonder this country is in shambles. Something tells me that when I go to this office it won't be as easy as you think. I have no documentation of my trip to Laos, I do have a police report, replacement passport, proper id, evidence of my flight home last night, and immigration letter from the embassy. One would think that would be enough to get home, however something tells me it won't be.

    the bay area beast:

i live closeby sfo, your home, too.

i read your original post. it appears like a teenager nightmare.

there are lots of hole in your story but i am not your jury nor judge.

this country called thailand is NOT in a shamble.... but YOU ARE....

just for your info, there are several thousand of u.s. citizen living in thailand. and in spite of the recent terrorists activities, the thais will forgive, forget and forward they will march....

coming back to you.... since you already have your return tix, you can present yourself at the imm and try to convince them with your story that you are currently broke AND

there is no one to send you funds from home....

if they believe your story.... you'll be deported with or without a funny stamp.... and you won't be able to return for a while.... but thailand will still be here awaiting....

but something tells me that you can do plenty of things for your good self.... but you just don't want to do it.... just because it is NOT on your terms and turf....

anyway.... wishing you favorable luck and a safe trip home.... :)

  12. as stated elsewhere numerous times....

unless apisit and his govt do something PROMPTLY AND DRASTICLY in reference to:

    army head;

    police head;

    person responsible for protecting and lying in reference to jatuporn's gang arrest and accommodation....;

    person causing dead to so many unnamed citizen and foot soldiers....;

    actual arresting and bringing to justice those terrorists and traitors including their chief....;

    including proper measures ditched out to those senators et al.... who showed up and instigated the public at the unlawful rally....; and many other hot topics....;

apisit.... will very unlikely to have a second term....

on the contrary.... apisit is a very good and morally upright pm.... most probably the most upright pm ever....

but then his good nature and kind heartedness alone.... so far.... are not able to rule the unruly crowd....

and more importantly, whatever the internal politics and administrative problems are.... apisit must replace those figure heads--army and police--who did not act promptly and under the constitutionally afforded rights to deal with the unlawful demonstration-both before and after the rally....

apisit.... if you fail to act promptly, proactively and creatively.... not only you would be cast aside by the voting public but also the whole democratic party as well....

it has been a decade since pm chuan and democratic party occupied the lead govt seat...

PLS DO SOMETHING PROMPTLY, PROACTIVELY, IMPRESSIVELY AND CREATIVELY.... so the overall very good govt would be able to regain voters' confidence and their very much needed VOTES.... i and my family members numbering more than thirty would very much like to vote for you and the democratic party again....

BUT YOU MUST ACT DECISIVELY AND PROMPTLY NOW....

  13. endure

won't you nominate the letter too?

it is really everyone's experiences encountering increasing impersonal services and stresses mostly created by institutions and banking services alike....

but i wonder a wonderfully expressive lady at such a tender age won't have one of her favorite child expressed her frustration in writing on her behalf....

nevertheless, it is a wonderful reading for me anyway.... will email to my son as well.... so we can have a good laugh together.... :)

  14. Here is a good one that I like and hope I will get to see other examples of how others use it in a sentence.

ยับยั้งใจ = I always used this as "will power" or "resist" or "hold back" or "cant stop myself"

Example of how I use it. If you are eating a lot and people are laughing because you cant stop, you can say ยับยั้งใจไม่ได้ I cant stop/ I cant resist or I have no will power.

In a sentence I have only ever used it in a negative way and would love to see some positive sentences.

    เสนห์ = charm

    ดึงดูดใจ = attractive

    จน = until

    ไม่สามารถ = unable

    ยับยั้งใจ = will power / resist / hold back

    ผมมี่เสนห์ดึงดูดใจเมียมากจนเมียไม่สามารถยับยั้งใจไม่ให้ชอบผมได้

pom mi senay doong duut jai mia mark jon mia mai samart yab yang jai mai hai chob pom dai.

(My wife is attracted to my charm and she is unable to resist liking me.) If only it was true...

So as you can see by the highlighted bit, it is used in a negative way.

Does anyone use it differently and could share their own ways of using it.

    cheers ITR :D

    ผมมี่เสนห์ดึงดูดใจเมียมาก จนเมียไม่สามารถยับยั้งใจ ไม่ <ให้> ชอบผมได้

pom mi senay doong duut jai mia mark jon mia mai samart yab yang jai mai hai chob pom dai.

your thai sentence construction above reminded me of many many foreign students in the u.s., who tried their very best in english composition....

and farang professors laughed light heartedly.... throughout the reading exercises....

in the referenced english composition, the foreign students used their best language skills with the choicest vocabularies....

but then the resulting english sentences still appear, on numerous occasions, comical and unnatural in local culture and practice....

pardon me pls.... that is how i feel when i read the thai sentence construction above....

pls do not get me wrong.... imho, there is nothing grammatically erroneous about it at all....

it is just that.... when i read it within a thai context, within a thai culture and within thai practice and daily life....

it just does not come out quite right.... to the thai ears somehow.... but then again.... it could very well be my ears.... as well.... :)

any how.... at least it deserves minimally an A- :D

actually, i do admire you all immensely.... pls do keep on practising and trying.... i am much envious of all your talents.... :D:D

  15. sell anything you feel like to....

    remember two things:

your work permit and secondly, watch what you say....

don't want to see another 'farang' saying something to hurt every other farangs in thailand.... alright?

hope you make a bundle.... :)

I'm going to set up a sidewalk stand by Siam Paragon to sell yellow & red striped flags, I wonder what the reaction would be............
  16. davejones

    toenail

    steffi

the video has not been removed.... not at all...., it has just been relocated.... LOL

ok.... how much are you guys willing to pay in euro terms.... to see the video....?

that is just to see.... ok? the price of being able to hear the audio too would cost a little more, alright?

    here is the link:

    enjoy, everyone

But it was him in the other photo on the BTS stairs too so how does he explain that?

He should be punished just like others but he knew that if he took part what the consequences would be for foreigners and should expect nothing less that what was stated prior to the demonstrations.

    ?????????????????

Does someone have that photo we can see?

This dude needs to be exported to England. He can play terrorist there with the _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

  17. lannarebirth....

finally.... most of us are incorrect in our assumption and thinking....

that we are mostly smarter and more superior than most.... :)

some university camps seem to agree that.... as far as smartness and intelligence are concerned....

....and that of the Asian American population being significantly higher - than that of the White American population (based on the self-identification of those tested).

now folks, do not go and jump off into chao pra ya river now.... :D

now.... is thailand counted as an asian country.... an interesting thought.... :D

  18. lannarebirth

just finished reading the referenced aritcle....

noting that thai children between 13 to 18.... scored 88

however, as i posted previously, that ministry of edu failed to present:

the name of the evaluative instruments, whether it was SB, WISC, UNIT, RIAS, WPPSI et al

and the taxonomy and stratification were also not revealed....

if i were there, i would surely called him and his major presentation into question.... (if i only dare.... lol)

IF YOU WOULD.... PLS DO NOT CONTINUE TO USE HIM AS A POINT OF REFFERENCE.... it is an injustice to the thai children and thailand as well....

and i shall pursue this much further with the dept of ed next week, in reference to that study and that use of reference.... which imho is totally inappropriate and impractical in situation such as presented then....

thx lannarebirth again for this enlightening ref.... :)

and when you did find the queen's comments in reference to this.... pls do email me at nakachalet at gmail dot com.... thx a bundle also...

you surely have made my stay in thailand much more interesting and challenging from now on.... :D

A rather long post before I go to bed; actually a continuation of my previous short post which was based on the following story:

Today was my first day to the office after 2 weeks absence. I was on a business travel abroad, I came back on Tuesday and the office was closed until yesterday. My day was really hectic and I was working like a machine the whole day. Before going home I decided to invite my Thai colleague for a cup of tea (he is not drinking alcohol) in our company's cafeteria. We work literally back-to-back the last 18 months and we make good company. We have both a high level of formal education and I appreciate his moderate style. We've never talked politics before but this afternoon I dared to ask his view over the situation. ....

    Good night.

Regarding your conversation with your colleague these my impressions....Take that limited knowledge of "what is democracy?" and overlay that on a nation with an average IQ of 89....

    lannarebirth....

my friend.... would you care to deliberate a little more on your comment and apparently your quote from somewhere about....

thai citizen on the average with an iq of 89....?

some months ago, there was also someone which i surely hope was not you again.... who used the same quote....

That would not have been me.

are you per chance a psy student of prof Wm from berkeley.... who proposed that blacks have lower intelligence.... which many choose to interpret it to mean that blacks as well as yellows et al.... are therefore inferior to whites....? you surely do not intend it to mean that.... do you, lannarebirth...?

I did not attend UC Berkeley though I was born and attended university in that vicinity. No I did not intend to mean what you have insinuated.

besides, i surely would also appreciate your enlightening many of us in reference to:

1--the title of the referenced research and perhaps its validity

My recollection was from an article I read wherein the Queen was in despair about the slide in Thai youth's IQ scores. I cannot find the article right now but here's another one from about that time. Her comments nmay have been a year or two earlier.

    http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2006/07/19/headlines/headlines_30009114.php

2--particularly the evaluative instruments used to measure the so-called iq of the sampled thai citizen (SB, WISC, WAIS, RIAS, WPPSI, UNIT et cal....)

many among thaivisa members are already quite acquainted with the understanding that even among intelligence testing instruments, there are significant variations in terms of neutrality of unfamiliar vocabularies used in different iq evaluative instruments....

and the resultant scores are also subject to interpretive variations....

with that said.... i'll still wanna wait for your enlightenment.... thx lannarebirth for the forthcoming wealth of info.... :D

    You are very welcome. :D

  19. you make alot more sense here.... LOL

r u from oxford too.... like the pm apisit....? :)

According to another post the BoT is shorting the Thai Baht to the tune of 70 billion dollars.

As long as they can keep this up the Baht will remain high ....... run out of funds and it will soon be 60bht to 1 dollar.

well, I can't be bothered to search for "another post", and maybe you could put a reference rather than state some nonsense.

If the BoT was shorting the THB, namely BORROWING and SELLING the THB and driving the price DOWN, then when the short is covered the THB would RISE dramatically and not COLLAPSE as you suggest. However, the concept of a central bank shorting its own currency is something I can't quite grasp.

BoT policy is to maintain a stable THB against a basket of mostly Asian currencies. They have been quite successful over the last few years and I hope that they continue to do so. There is an upward pressure on the THB due to the trading surplus Thailand has with other countries. Despite the hope of a lot of westerners around here that the THB will collapse against the GBP, EUR, USD or whatever, the trend is definitely in the other direction and the THB will, IMO, continue to gain strength in line and along with other Asian currencies.
