  1. Living just around the corner and up the street a bit behind the Lemon Green gas pump, word has it that they now want 7 mill to make the road safe.

No point in trying to apply " mob pressure " as they are the same entity.

OK. Say let's agree to the 7 mill, what you will get is " oh sorry you misunderstood, that was last month, we want 10 mill. now.

2 things that are apparent in Thailand are extreme lack of integrity and commonsense, I'm not a linguist but I doubt they're even listed in the Thai dictionary as they have no relation to the way they behave. There was an article about it in the Gazette months ago - maybe a year ago. Precisely 1 year + onwards and F^^^all has happened except more persons being killed.

My wife points out that this is the shame of Rawai, and please do not judge the rest of Thailand by this local reaction.

Get used to the traffic cones and the flashing arrow in the middle of a 2 lane + highway and the resultant accidents 'cause there's bound to be a few more. I've had mine already and if you are falang you will be in the wrong..... even if you're not.

  2. Hmmm I'm english, never heard of mayo style. :D

I'm Aussie, never heard of it that way either, back home only heard of it as doggie style.

Kiwis, being different I believe call it sheep style. BYO gum boots.

But if you want the proper shrimp (notice there is a P in there) sauce as served in my restaurant " The Oyster Bar" in Cairns about 30 yrs. ago the real deal is ..............Mayo (Kraft), tomato sauce (Heinz), Worcestershire (Lea & Perrins), Tabasco and a bit of soy (Kikoman) to darken it and substitute for salt. The lemon juice is squeezed onto the shrimp / oysters / raw fish, at time of serving, do not include it into the sauce, it will self destruct on contact. Measures to suit your taste but try 5 - 1 - 1/2 + drops and dashes of the rest.

Good luck and if it causes your demise we'll try another recipe. Don't worry She'll be right mate :):D

  3. Anyone know if the immigration office/ferry/hotel is open as usual for visa runs on a Saturday? Would appreciate any opinions before I head up there tomorrow.

Just spoke to the missus who works for a visa run company, says all systems go.

Drive safely and have a nice day.

  4. It will be another 100 years before they line up again.

    Next year ?? 10:10 on 10/10/10

    I beg your pardon Sir.

The numerical series 10.10.10.10.10. is not the same as 09.09.09.09.09. which will not appear as a date in time for another 100 years.

To prove the point, drop by with any number of dollars multiplied by 10 and I'll give you an equal amount of dollars multiplied by 9. :)

  5. It will be another 100 years before they line up again.

At 9 seconds past 9am tomorrow on the 9th day of the 9th month and the 9th year of this century, we will know what time it is and (hopefully) what is happening in our surroundings.

Does anyone out there know what happened in Phuket, or for that matter the rest of Thailand, at this same time 100 or even 200 years ago.

I'm sure jet ski scams weren't part of the local economy nor the other inane situations that exist today.

Interestingly enough our revered monk Luang Pu Supha was 13 yrs old at that time if his paperwork is in order.

Really, It would be interesting to hear his comments on what it was like here 100 years ago. Any budding reporters out there?

Anyways here's to the next hundred. :)

  6. Our favourite sports and I have searched the internet this morning to see where

    1. The US Open is being broadcast starting today, and

2.where is The Tri-Nations being shown.

As usual Star and Espn are full of soccer ,ping pong and golf but never the Rugby

    Can anyone help?

Go out for a beer to watch the tri-nations on the South African Supersport channels.

I have checked and they are not showing the US Open tennis on Supersport so you'll need to find a place with Astro.

That's assuming that it's not anywhere on UBC and their internet scheduling is wrong.

FYI. I am presently watching the US open on TRUE ch 62. Kim Clijsters v Kutuznova. Clijsters 3 zip. Don't know if it's on astro, I don't need to know. What I do know is I'll be asleep b/4 the games over but can watch the repeat in the morning. At least that's one advantage of having True/UBC.

I would rather watch the tri nations, rugby, and all other VFL and ARL games via direct satelite link as I have, rather than through a somewhat suss and blurry supersport or astro feed, The sound is in sync as well as a better picture quality.

  7. Hi!

The US open is being broadcast on ch 62 true sport live @ 06:00 till 10:00 and from 22:00 till 05:00 daily until the mens final @ 03:00 on Mon 14 Sept. It's really a matter of getting up early, staying awake or watching the replays.

Next Tri Nations match ( Wallabies v Springboks ) is next Sat @ 17:00 local time, that's more realistic, we will be watching it live, with a hot meat pie and a cold V.B. stubbie along with all the other NRL and AFL weekend games.

For full programing on Aus. sport. NRL, AFL and Tri Nations matches live, view Australian network program guide, it's pretty comprehensive.

    australianetwork com/guide/sportslounge

I hope the above answers your questions.

    Cheers 'n' beers.

  8. i wnt to build tennis court next to my khon ken house but. does nyone hve ny contcts for someone to build it?

    sorry my keybord is broken

If you can't afford a new keyboard or get an 'A' stuck in the old one you're probably not in the league to afford a tennis court.

However if you have a financial recovery in the near future expect to pay shitloads if you want a proper court, not one of painted concrete with a chicken wire or fish net fence, full of cracks and unplayable after a few years.

2 years ago I paid around around 4.5 mill for an international standard surface and size tennis court with 1/2 sized practice court with knock wall attached, including lighting equal to daylight. This could be divided by two or more if substandard construction methods and a reduction in quality were employed.

After some period of lengthy investigation I settled on a hard court playing surface over an asphalt base. Also for consideration is the artificial sand filled grass surface, about the same price as it's laid over concrete, give it the flick, almost as expensive as maintaining a real grass court but the suppliers won't tell you that, as they want the maintainence contract to keep it playable. Fencing also is a consideration and I went for plastic coated chain mesh with galvanized framework. Lighting is another consideration expect to pay heaps if it's done correctly so that you don't get electroplated when you hit the switch.

It has been mentioned by some visiting players that we have the best tennis court in Phuket, if so, it simply means you get what you pay for.

Please feel free if you want to PM me for some of the pitfalls and a few tips .

  9. G'day Peter.

I have just what you're looking for. Light weight, extending handle, pneumatic tyres, and casters for use in horizontal (flat) position. I bought it s/h from a departing expat who said he bought it in Phuket but I don't know where.

You're welcome to drop by and check it out to help to search for it's twin brother as it's not for sale.

For a copy I would check out Phuket Tools which is my favorite tool shop. 100 meters on LHS Sakdidet Rd. from Chaofa Rd. east, It's the one that goes to the aquarium and Phuket Port. The owners name is Chaiyot and is fluent in English. If he hasn't got what you want he'll ring around, find it and point you in the right direction or order it in for you from a catalogue. IMHO You will not get a better price or service anywhere.

He is unbelievably helpful and has many contacts for repairs of tools etc. :):D

  10. Dr Prasert Thepalong, Phuket Dental Centre: 076 255336

Highly recommended by others for normal dental work, he was honest enough to tell me that he couldn't whiten my crowns, so they would look grey against my real teeth if I had the real ones whitened.

He also said if I wanted to replace the crowns - maybe in 5 years or so - he could make the new crowns whiter and then whiten the surrounding teeth.

He has one clinic in Phuket town next door to Bangkok Phuket Hospital and a new one near the junction of Sai Yuan and the road that goes north to Kata and south to Nai Harn. His clinic about 50 yards along the road to Kata, on the left.

I had my teeth cleaned there. I was expecting more work than that but he said my oral hygiene was very good and he spent the next 45 minutes cleaning off the tartar that had built up over the previous 6 or 7 years! :D

He's got lovely dimples. So does his 5 year old daughter. :D

I totally agree, he is quality. :)

I have known Prasert (Aud) for possibly 10 years. Even my ex and my family members come from Australia for their dental work. He is at his Nai Harn clinic on Monday and Wed. afternoons telephone 076 388-899. Please phone as appointments are necessary.

For the record he's a keen paraglider pilot as well and his brother is an excellent E.N.&T. specialist in Phuket town. :D

  11. That's very sad to read. I knew them both from eating an occasional lunch in their little shop over the past 4 years. Tom's wife was not so old, I remember an older lady who I assumed was the wife's mother. How did she die ?

Some one correct me if I'm wrong but Toms wife Porn was around 58 yrs. Tom was 61.

Porn died as a result of a ( stroke ) brain blood clot, after about 5 days in Vachaira hospital intensive are and was cremated I think, last Friday. 'Kata' I think you remember the lady herself, she was a young 58 that's what makes it all so hard.

  12. Yeah Gerd.

First thought also was Gordon @ Safeway but if you could find out who had the " concession " after the tsunami to supply refrigerated and freezer containers would be a good link. Don't know diddly squat who, but worth a Google or a talk to a few of the relevant local authorities.

    s.s.

  13. Firstly my condolences to the family's concerned.

I first met Tom and Porn when I first sailed into Phuket 18 yrs ago on a world journey and went no further because people like them were around. Truly wonderful people who as Valentine points out made a go of it against all adversities. It was Toms wish they would be together in passing if they could not remain together in life, knowing their closeness it is easy to understand.

The latest that I can find out is that their son Patrick who came from the U.S. for his mothers funeral has returned as his fathers body is still being held in Vacharia hospital awaiting a coroners report. He intends to return when the autopsy is finalized. I think unnecessary as it was clearly a case of him ending his own life. This is all very sad.

I think very little more can be said except to say Patrick we all share your sorrow and may Tom and Porn rest in peace.

    Stafford.

  14. "After Phuket is listed as a sustainable tourism area I would love to see the problem of the land rights issues addressed, because about 60 per cent of the land on the island is currently owned by foreigners.

    60%. Interesting figure.

Yes George, indeed interesting. When were the rules changed that foreigners were allowed to own land. I wish I was allowed to own mine. Am I too early or too late ?

Tribunyat Jariyalerpong, president of the Thalang Cultural Village at Ban Khanaen who made this statement is either being misquoted by the P.G. or doesn't really have a clue what he is on about.

"It is a frightening situation that will only get worse unless it is addressed. Before long we might see landless local people having to rent places to live in from foreigners," Mr Tribunyat said.

    Is this guy nuts ????????????

  15. I have a new place north of the Sarasin Bridge without a land line. Also, CAT wireless doesn't work there due to a weak signal. My way of getting online is a Sierra wireless aircard, but it isn't fast enough to be able to use Skype. Since I occasionally need to make international calls, I have to go to a hot spot to use Skype from my laptop. The closest place I've found so far is the bakery at Laguna. Does anyone know of a place north of the Yacht Haven up to the Klok Kloi area where I can get online with a fast enough signal to make a call?

    G'day Mate.

This is only a stab in the dark but the new Hi So checkpoint when you get across the bridge should have a local network that you can access.

If all else fails proceed another 40 or 50 klm south into the remote jungle of Rawai where the wi fi access is 24/7, the fish are jumping on your hook, the chickens are on the run, and there's a cold one in the fridge.

    See ya again soon. :)

  16. know lots of people who do and swear by it. cant hurt you so why not

Probably drunk everything else legal on the planet, so why not give it a try. Is it a cure for some ailment, an assist to erect the Eiffel tower, or just for the buzz.

Where can you buy it here in Phuket ?? Any advice or warnings appreciated.

  17. Bottom line, just chose a nice hotel in a pleasant area. Forget the Patong crap, that's only worth a couple of hours of anybody's time. If you get the hotel right, and negotiate a good discount based on the number of guests that you're anticipating, everybody will be happy, and your family/friends can 'cherry pick' themselves about what tours/excursions they want to do. My experience, let everyone do what they want to do, when they want to do it. Trying to do mass social/recreation events are a nightmare (and nobody will thank you for it).

Agree 100% just a quick glance into our own backyard is proof enough.

  18. I think you meen the west coast beaches Sportsman. Not many decent beaches on the east coast.

    Thanks for the correction Starkey.

Yeah, think I was facing the wrong way whilst I was writing.

  19. I have not been to Phuket for 8 yrs. I know things change so I want to ask you locals for advice.

I am staying at Royal Phuket Yacht club. Are there any nice restaurants within walking distance of the hotel?

Is Phuket Fantasea worth going to see (I have an 8 yr old son)

Are there any reputable companies that would hire a boat and crew for 8 hours?

How long does it take to get over to Phi Phi island?

I realise if I trawl through the forum, I am sure to find some answers, but if someone could give me an up to date answer, that would be great :)

    1. There are many restaurants in that area at a fraction of the price of a luxury (?) hotel.

    2. Fantasea is definitely worthwhile and the in house buffet b/4 the show was good value, I assume still is.

    3. Have a few mates with their own yachts, don't see your request being a problem. P.M. for details.

    4. depends on means of transport. Swimming, ferry, sailing yacht, speed boat (not recommended) helicopter. Ferry I think about 1 1/2 hrs.

Hope you enjoy your stay and be careful of the east coast beaches at this time of the year.

  20. So what month and year do we finally get mass distribution of Beer Lao in Thailand? And will it be real Beer Lao or made in Thailand fake Beer Lao? Its no wonder the powers that be are delaying this, if it was sold today at competitive prices (not premium) it would take over 50 percent of the market easily.

Got it from the powers that be here in Phuket ( distributors ) that supplies will be available here the middle of next month (August) and will still be the real deal. I simply hope we have enough in stock to satisfy demand until then, but without living in hope here in Thailand, you may as well go home anyway.

Can't quite get the drift about "competitive price", ours across the bar is the same as Heineken or San Mig which cost about the same, and it is a fully imported beer, not just made under license.

Totally agree if it was sold at the same price as entry level Thai beers it would have a far greater acceptance level, it is indeed a good quality beer and tastes free of 'preservatives' quite unlike most of the 'local' brews.

    As for consumer demand it sort of goes like this and I only quote our own custom;

    Tiger.

    Lao, (inc, dark)

    Heineken.

    Singha.

    San Mig. light.

Australian V.B., Bulmers and other English ciders

    Leo.

lucky to get a mention, Chang.

and kept as toilet cleaner, not for sale, Phuket Larger.

It only goes to prove everywhere is case sensitive though I feel Phuket has its own market demand and as such is not representative as to the rest of Thailand. It is not only a matter of cost but also one of availability and last but not least, personal preference.

God damm, another bottle with a hole in the bottom, better try a'nudder.

    Cheers 'n' beers.

  21. QUOTE (loubrockbank @ 2009-07-09 23:13:44) post_snapback.gifwould be a shame if we didn't have an annual BBQ though.

    I agree.

I don't understand why The Friendship Beach thing came off so well last year, and yet this year we are unable to duplicate.

It looks like the BBQ idea is going nowhere at present. Not having been to a TV event before I have no idea what it takes to organise but I am willing to offer my assistance.

I still say the Rawai Sports Club August 22, 3pm until the skipper kicks us out.

Huggybear, I'll go along with whatever decision the head Honchos make. I see no reason why it should not be as successful as the other events of past years. Can only put forward the idea of an informal meeting of those that are interested in getting this thing by the scruff of the neck, and there have been a few offering assistance. Say next Sunday, day or night, over a few coldies. If Aug 22 is the day, there is not excessive time left for successful planning. Watcha think ?
