So, they don't actually believe the Buddhist teachings? One would think karma would be some sort of a deterrent, for a non sociopath.

Not the least bit true in Thailand. Spoken to several dealers. They are having a very hard time selling new cars for the past year or so.
Where are you getting your information from? It appears highly suspect.

Which major industry has he decimated other that titty bars and rub and tug joints ?
Tourism. Down 98%. A 3 trillion baht a year industry prior to the shutdowns. Exports are down. Foreign investment is down. Airlines are down. Restaurant trade is down. New car sales are way, way down. The real estate industry is way down, both condos and commercial. Shall I go on?
Where have you been?

They will be disappointed that only 25,000 people a month will come, at best. This program was destined to fail, the moment the cowards added the 5th nite quarantine. Even Justin Bieber or Pauly Shore would have known that was beyond dumb. Where is the courage? Why are these army guys so timid, and afraid of their own shadows? Shameful behavior. Dumb and dumber.

I thought it was the Covids that has disprupted the Thai economy... Much like it has done in many countries around the world, Is Prayuth also to blame for those countries ?
Wow. Talk about missing the point. It is not Covid. It is the way it was handled. The US economy is doing very well. So is Mexico, which never had one economic shutdown. Prayuth has utterly decimated a major industry here. Face up to the facts. Highly selective, and highly favorable (to the rich cronies) shutdowns do not accomplish much, other than putting millions out of work.

- The exchange rate is absolutely NOT in our favor.
- Traffic and commuting in Bangkok has gotten worse year after year.
- The PM2.5 pollution in larger cities has peaked to borderline unbreathable levels (and very little is done to prevent it, let alone tackle it).
- The price of goods has been continuously increasing by an average of 15% every 5 years back to back.
- The Highest constitutional Thai courts have handed out a judgement essentially stating that dual pricing foreigners was deemed acceptable.
- "Pay 4 play" relationship with local females has become way more expensive than it should be, it is now almost on par with Eastern European countries (which for some of us, defeats the whole purpose of even going to Thailand to begin with).
- Ladies of the night constantly glued to their phones 24/7 having as many as 20 different "sponsors" at a time.
- Pesky vloggers, bloggers roaming just about everywhere across the Kingdom, with their cameras pointed in every directions at mongers then uploading footage to YouTube without even blurring people's faces, etc, publicly naming and shaming anyone who dares adventuring themselves in seedy areas or engaging in nightlife activities.
- Consumption of alcohol beverage on the streets, on the beaches, in public parks, near/in front of official buildings, near Temples and just about everywhere in public is slowly becoming illegal, with some years having up to 21 religious related holidays per calendar year during which the sale/use of alcohol is outright frowned upon.
- Immigration hurdles have become drastic as time goes on, reinstating of the dreaded TM-30, TM-5, TM-whatever, clamping down of visa border runs, clamping down of "education visas", the SHA+, Test & Go, Sandbox, Thailand Pass, permanent ending of Visas on Arrivals.
- Road carnage numbers on the rise, "Road Safety" should be of a national concern in the Kingdom, very little is done about it.
- Health Minister flat out calling foreigners "dirty farangs" and stating they should "kick us out" during an improvised press conference.
- Currently elected officials being in office in (allegedly) fraudulent ways and manipulating/re-writing the Thai constitution as many times as necessary in order to remain in power endlessly that would make Vladimir Putin blush.
- PayPal withdrawing it's operations from Thailand, soon to be followed by Transferwise and other fintech online services, it's only a matter of time.
- Cryptocurrencies being "looked into" by the central Bank of Thailand, they are trying to restrict/forbid the use/buy/sale of Bitcoin and all other digital currencies (because they figured they cannot get their cut).
- Neighboring country Myanmar in War with itself, the Thais navy/army are not helping or doing their part, better yet they are sending civilians back across the border to... their demise.
- Amnesty International being outed of the Kingdom which should raise a major concern for anyone reading this very post.
- Rabies from Soi dogs infection rates are on a sharp rise, so are dengue fever outbreaks from mosquitoes bites while the Zika virus is out of control in remote parts of the country, very little is done about it.
- The Kingdom being turned into a Police state slowly but surely, cameras being added left and right, biometrics systems are now in use at 100% of the 74 points of entrance/exit from the Kingdom, lèse majestés laws are being brought in full force, defamation laws are being used to either sue or counter-sue anyone at any whim.
- No land ownership for any of us, etc, etc, and the list goes on and on and on...
What else do you people need to take those rose tinted glasses off and realise that the Thailand of 1990-2000's is gone for good, Thailand is no longer the land of smiles, Thailand is no longer a cheap booze/partying/fiesta/mongering destination.
Thailand is no longer a bang for your buck. Not a bargain anymore.
Move. On.
Wow. Let's call this the tirade of the month. Quite an impressive list. I do agree Thailand is moving backwards. It is definitely NOT becoming an improved version of itself. Little is improving other than a wee bit of infrastructure, and that is going at a snails pace.
However, the near total destruction of the tourism industry is good for many expats. Been staying at amazing four hotels in Bangkok for 1500 a nite. Many things here are quite reasonable compared to exploding prices and hyper inflation in the US and Europe. Not to mention the perpetual joylessness, anxiety and stress. That is depressing. Most people here have better attitudes and are infinitely more pleasant. I walk into a 7/11 here and joke and flirt with a super cute young gal who is working the register and she is smiling or laughing the whole time. Same with alot of cute, young waitresses. You can't put a price on that. In the US, beyond 50, we are ghosts. No thanks.

My wife mentioned a few days ago that Thais are murdering are a higher rate now. Many of her customers are pawning their last piece of gold at her gold shop, and they don't know what to do when the last few baht run out. Extreme desperation is coming, expect to see more of this trend. Psyche can only take so much before it snaps. Time for a businessman to run the country again. And if you're a general, it's time to think about an exit strategy, it only gets worse from here and all fingers are pointing at you.
Very true. It is called the Prayuth devastation. He has obliterated the economy. Army boys should never be allowed to run anything but a barrack, or a maintenance depot. They are grossly under qualified for the real world.

Homicide Rate (per 100k people)
United States
Homicide Rate: 4.96
Thailand
Homicide Rate: 2.58
Thailand isn't doing so bad for a developing nation when you compare it to the USA which is supposedly a first world developed countryAccording to my stats the murder rate is higher here.
49.6 per million compared to the US, which is 42 per million. Depends on where you get the stats.
Regardless, the most important stat for us is violence perpetrated in foreigners. Which is low here. If they want to kill each other, it is sad, but it is what it is.

Part of the issue here is how the boys are raised. Many never truly become real men. How many of the truly heinous crimes here are committed by women? Very few.
They are an overly entitled gender here in the LOS. Boys from an early age are told they are special.
What parents need to start doing is to tell their sons:
1. You are nothing special. You become special when you prove yourself to be a worthy person, or an exemplary character. A cut above the rest. Someone who gives and does not just take.
2. Your sister is special. She works hard, she is ambitious, and she is not lazy. Prove yourself to be at least equal to her. There is a reason why women run this country. The place would die in two days without them.
3. Respect is not freely given. It must be earned. Go out into the world and earn some respect. -

Totally agree. My second test was a bloody nightmare - involving 3 visits. At the time I thought "what will real tourists think about this". The woman in charge of the testing seemed to be telling me how lucky I was by stating "Its free" with a don't complain attitude.
I know they are aiming at tourists but we all spend money - during my last trip (30 Dec - 18 Jan) I'll wager I spent more money than any 'tourist' did. But this hotel requirement is just madness for me, there are no SHA hotels anywhere near my home so I'll have to return to Bangkok to comply then back home again!
The TAT contact centre seemed to have some sympathy and told me to wite to the government contact centre - I did but I'm not expecting any reply. If they had real concerns, you'd think they'd take the matter up with the government themselves.
I intend leaving booking my next trip - March/April until near the time in the hope they see sense and the rules change.
Same here. No travel until these excessive rules change. Expect no more than 25,000 to 40,000 tourists a month, until they get rid of the 2nd nite rule. Even then with the original test and go, only 100,000 a month. Not going to make a huge dent in the losses.

This is a highly inaccurate headline. This IS a quarantine program. It requires two nights of quarantine, and the 2nd nite is the deal breaker. It is highly inconvenient. And in addition, there is the threat of a two week hospital stay, even if you are completely asymptomatic, if one test comes back positive, if someone on the plane sitting nearby, or in your van tests positive.
Stop the panic now. Man up, and show some courage. This is NOT the Zombie Apocalypse. This is not the Bubonic plague. Let your people go back to work. Try supporting a multi trillion baht a year industry, and well beyond a trillion dollars in investments and infrastructure, instead of being puny cowards.

Thailand does have a high homicide rate. About comparable to the US, which is a very violent nation. But fortunately, it does not happen to foreigners much here. Another good reason to keep our noses clean, remain polite and respectful at all times, and keep our cool.
I used to mouth off to folks who drove poorly in the US. I have even done that a few times here. I do not do that anymore. It is not worth it. You never know who you are going to anger, and when one of them is a looney, it could end up being the last thing you do on this earth.

There is simply no place in this world for savage pets. None. Put that dog down asap. And penalize the owners. Big time. A million baht fine paid to the victim should send a message to other pathological super freaks who own animals bred to maim. Pit bulls are statistically the nastiest dogs in the planet. If the owner can't afford the fine, how about mandatory forfeiture of their home, as compensation?
Regardless of the value. It sends a message.

Those who are above the law feel no shame. Didn't have any effect with the Red Bull family, did it.
Well maybe, maybe not. They certainly do not seem to mind using their wealth to buy their way out of legal charges. To cause a death and feel no guilt or shame, or responsible for it requires a pathological degree of insanity, or sickness. Whether all of "those super freak people" are sick in the head, or not I have no idea. Perhaps a society that instills a sense of being super special, and in another class, within the rich, also breeds a degenerate morality in that class? If so, perhaps the hi-so are the degenerate class.

That's another thing I've not considered. Staples like quinoa.
I have to drive to Chiang Mai to buy the ghee that I like. The price plus shipping is cheaper than what I buy in Chiang Mai.
I haven't priced quinoa for awhile. It looks like I might be less expensive than I could buy at a Chiang Mai health food store.
The quinoa I've seen in CM are in small packages and really expensive which is why I don't buy it. Lazada prices are reasonable for sure! Thanks!
Learning all sorts of new stuff today!
It is alot cheaper than in any local stores. However, just looked and did not see it by the kilo. Supply chain nonsense?

I buy all my green tea bags in the US. A Taiwanese company called Tenren. Amazing quality. Can't find it here.
I buy bulk green tea on ebay. Either free shipping of relatively low shipping, direct from Chinese growers or distributors. Around $60-80 a kilo, for very high grade pearl Jasmine, or similar grade. No issues with customs. Far higher here, if you can find it.
The green tea powder I use for matcha drinks. And frozen matcha. A nice kind of dessert food. I like Choui Fong. Reasonable and good taste. Pure. No additives or sugar. Easy to find on Lazada.

Don't need them. A friend of mine uses a foreign lawyer in Bangkok, who is one of the top attorneys around. He said his office cannot find enough hours in the day to meet with expats who are leaving, with their Thai spouse or family, and dealing with trusts, wills or legal status for their remaining Thai families, properties, etc.
He said he has never seen anything like it, in the 30 years he has been in practice here.
Woe is Thailand. Where is the hope for the future?
The dinosaur creeps are moving this nation backwards at a breakneck pace. Truly regressive reptilian leadership.

Thailand saved my life.
