  1. Go to Bang Po / Soi Furniture.

Wood, tools, sandpaper, fasteners, finish. Everything you need.

Also lots of pre made and made to order furniture.

In Thai it's called "Thanon Sai Mai" (or Soi Wat Batcha, i believe is the official name), runs between Pracharat Rd. (extension of Samsen Rd.) and Thanon Krunkthep - Non. (Bangkok - Nonthaburi Rd. ). Easiest access is from Bangsue railway station.

It's the place in Bangkok for anything regarding woodwork. Toolshops, Wood in all quantities and qualities. It's a Soi about a kilometer or two long, with hundreds of shops dealing in wood related businesses.

I went there looking for 2 items

    exotic wood (amboyna burl etc)

    Band Saw

Essentially the only wood available is teak

I found some band saws, no variety and all 10K Baht

I also went up there with high expectations and was VERY disappointed!

Sure enough it's a long road, but you could easily cut out about 90% of

the shops there and get the same products in 6 shops instead of the 40 or

so that are there all just selling the same stuff as the shop next door.

    Absolutely rubbish! And hardly cheap!

All teak, teak, teak! As if it's a teak-pusher's ghetto or something! No choice to speak

of and only about 4 or maybe 5 places on the whole stretch that sell sheet wood,

each of which are small with poor stock and not much viability to truly go about selecting good

wood (or plywood or MDF or whatever else you may have in mind).

1 place at the end furthest from the river is a larger size and has a bit more choice,

but the prices are hiked up accordingly.

Surely there's better/other places in the whole of Bangkok?

I used to live in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) - a city about a tenth the size of Bangkok - and I knew

about 5 or 6 streets/areas not far out of the centre, where you could go and buy much more

variety of wood and lumber (and MDF/plywood etc) at a fraction of the prices they ask here.

    How is that so?

Is it just a well-kept secret or something?

    ????

  2. Sorry guys, almost forgot to do the 'round-up' for this week...

    So, who's coming tomorrow (Sunday 14th Feb. - 5pm) ?

Come on, you know you can sneak in a quick hour of footy before going out for that 'romantic dinner' with the other half... yes?

My gf's away tomorrow, but seriously I'll understand if we've got a few cry-offs for valentine's.

Or would it be better if I make the booking 4-5pm so it finishes earlier?

  3. Ok, well it seems like there'd not be enough for a game this evening with only 5 definites.

Sorry Josh et al. Hopefully next week.

For all that are interested in mid week games, if you haven't already, can you please post a reply to the "...which weekday eve?" topic here:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...view=getnewpost

That'll make it much easier to see and count exactly who and how many are ready for it.

    Cheers, A.

  4. Guys Joshua is thinking of fixing a mid-week game tomorrow night. So far a couple has replied and is up for it. Pls check your e-mail and reply.

    Thanks

Oops, missed the emails on this today, sorry.

Well, from what I just saw in my mailbox,

the following guys fancy playing Tuesday (today) evening at 7pm:

    -Groovetank

    -Thehabs

    -AngusTan

    -EmanuelSWE

    -me [damaja] (maybe)

If 8+ say definite yes today by 5pm, then sure, why not...

but I'd also have to check there's a court available at 7pm.

    Or anyone's welcome to call them at the Sponsor (X-)Park if they speak some Thai - 02 670 8008 / 0776 532365

  5. Well, as I've not had anyone say they prefer the cheaper 4pm start this Sunday, and I've neither had confirmations from all potential players,

I'm going to keep the booking at 5pm.

I've had 4 guys that were there last week say they can't come this week (including Luang)

1 new player say he will come this week.

4 confirmations from players from last week that they will come...

I'm hoping 5+ more of the unconfirmed ones will be able to make it as otherwise we'll maybe struggle to have enough.

Anyone reading this topic for the first time, just come on down there and introduce yourself to join in

    So, to clarify:

Kick-off at 5pm again this Sunday 7th Feb.

Location: as before - Sponsor Park, Sathorn (see prev. posts for details).

Price will be up to 120 bht each depending on how many come (or up to 240 bht if we play a 2nd hour like last week).

    Hope to see you there!

    Cheers.

    :)

  6. I won't be there unfortunately guys. Last weeks injury was fairly serious as thought- Grade 2 ruptured/torn calf muscle! Still on crutches at the moment and probably out for 5-8 weeks :) Warm up properly guys!

Anyway, regarding times, i would be ok with 4pm in the future.

    Have fun all.

VERY nasty sounding injury Luang! Hope it's not too painful and that you recover quickly!

Lesson learnt!: Warm-up before and be sure to have good insurance

(especially if, like me, you've pushed well over the hump of 30, when the muscles/cartilage/tendons are a lot less supple and prone to just give in if you don't give them fair warning).

  7. Hi all,

So, who's up for playing this Sunday again?

Unfortunately, the manager at the X-Park has told me that the last 2 weeks the guy who I made the bookings with made a mistake and should only have charged us 600 baht/hr if we were playing "before 5pm" (and to be fair, it does say this on their leaflet etc.), so we have 2 choices:

    1) make the booking 4pm (or maybe it could be 4.30pm - I could try) to keep the first hour at 600 bht/hr.

    or

    2) keep the booking time at 5pm and pay the peak rate of 1200 bht/hr.

Anyone got a problem with making it 4pm????

Anyway, as far as I can tell, the following is the playing/contact list for this week:

Expected for Sunday 7th Feb at 4pm / 5pm (tbc?):

    - Damaja

    - Angustan

    - Beechy

    - Beejoir (+1)

    - Bkksteviejai

    - Chrisdino

    - Groovetank

    - JonnyF

    - Luang (+ Ron)

    - EmanuelSWE

    - Neutronium

    - Thehabs - Sure

    - Tamo

    Maybe, but not sure:

    - MegaRanter

    - ChrisMoss

    - Vid1

  8. I've created a new topic with a poll for deciding which would be best day to play a 2nd weekly game, here:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Football-fut...-W-t334720.html

Please only add a vote if you are already subscribed to this topic and are participating, or have replied to me by PM and expect to join in the near future.

Vote for your 1st and 2nd preference for a week day evening on which we should book a 2nd weekly game, then also preferred time.

Please also add a reply there saying it

    (e.g.: "1st pref.: monday after 7; 2nd pref.: Thursday after 8")

as well as on the poll.

    Cheers,

    A.

[btw, I'm doing this on a separate topic because I dunno how to add a poll to the main one ...and I've no idea if it'll work either! :S ]

  9. This poll is linked to the following topic thread:

Please only add a vote if you are already subscribed to that topic and are already participating, or have expressed an interest to in the near future.

  10. Hi all,

Check your emails everyone who's given me theirs. Here's the same info for those who haven't yet...

As far as I can tell, the following is the playing/contact list for this week:

Expected for Sunday 31st Jan at 5pm:

    - Damaja

    - Angustan

    - Beechy

    - Beejoir (+2)

    - Bkksteviejai

    - Chrisdino ?

    - Groovetank (+1)

    - JonnyF

    - Luang (+1)

    - MegaRanter

    - Tamo

    Maybe, but not sure:

    - ChrisMoss

    - EmanuelSWE

    - Neutronium

So there should be plenty coming to play, which means I'd recommend you get down there early so we're playing full the whole hour.

As soon as we've got 10, we start playing games. Then if/when there's more than 10 we'll start substituting every time a goal is scored from the side that concedes a goal (until there's 5 or more waiting, which will then mean the whole side changes each time they concede a goal... etc).

If we feel like playing more after 1 hour it shouldn't be a problem to extend, so don't worry too much about playing time.

If you can, please try to bring 2 t-shirts of contrasting colours.

For those that didn't come last week, here's the location info etc.:

We are playing this Sunday, 5pm - 6pm

Court is booked under my name - Adam.

Cost is 600 baht divided by the # that show up.

    [it's off-peak at 5pm then if we extend it's 1200 bht/hr - 5pm-9pm].

Location (again, sorry 4 repetition for some):

    X-Park ('Sponsor park')

    56 South Sathorn Rd.

    Bangkok 10120.

    > Next to 'Fraser Suites Urbana Sathorn' and opposite Silom Soi 2 (Convent Rd.).

    - It's a short walk from either Sala Daeng or Chong Nonsi BTS, or either Silom or Lumpini MRT stations. If you can't find it, call me (+66879829063).

    > google map location: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?oe=UTF-8&am....01987&z=16

    > Sponsor Park website with map in Thai for taxi: http://www.sponsor.co.th/sponsorpark/contact.html

    Note:

    !- Don't forget:

    -Kit (rubber-sole sport-Shoes+Shorts+Socks+t-shirt);

    -Money (180+ baht);

    -Towel;

    -Water (though a drinks machine is there - need coins);

-Shinguards (if u have); Ball (if u have).

-No lockers unfortunately. -2 basic cold-water showers in the bathrooms.

-They have futsal balls there, but if anyone has a good ball please bring along.

See you all Sunday hopefully (I'll maybe bring a wheelchair this time just in case!) :D

    -Adam.

    :)

P.S.: Still in the loop...Interested in future but not yet available (till):

    - vid1 (Sun 7th Feb?)

    - Richard_smith237 (Sun 28th Feb?)

    - Wossnext (?)

    - Sure (?)

    - MSingh (?)

  11. when its the next game? I am 40 and just played a couple of game recently after 15 years.

The arsenal grounds at Suk 21 is quite a hike for me as I live around suksawat.

In BTW I am sloppier than Sol Campbell.

    I am good for 31st.

It's ok, I'm knocking on the door of 40 myself, and I suspect I'm not the only one.

So you may as well come along on Sunday 31st and see how you feel.

See previous post(s) for location and time etc.

  12. Be good if everyone could bring one red and one blue shirt or the like, it was a bit confusing having a multi coloured kick around....

    Buy some bibs.

Its hot playing as it is, and bibs just add another layer, I'm sure everyones either got a red/white/blue colour Tshirt.

Actually, I think the place might have bibs - I think I saw some hanging on a rack upstairs in the 'office' - so we could try next time if they'll let us use them.

Otherwise, maybe everyone should just bring two t-shirts with them - one light and one dark - then if we can't use their bibs or don't like having 2 layers, we can just split teams according to light or dark shirts (avoiding the whole red-blue allegiances thing too ;P )

  13. Just sitting in my chair in office all day every movement is painful.... even dread going to the loo.... yesterday after the game was worse.... the wife thought she needed to call the hospital

    :)

there's some comfort in knowing that i'm not alone in feeling like i have a major muscle & ligament hangover!

my gf's away at the moment, but i've wondered myself a couple of times today if i might need a medical checkup and i'm sure if she were here she'd be sending me to the hospital too!

  14. It happened!

We had a good friendly game today so great going guys!

We had exactly 10 turn up and though it wasn't quite 'exhibition' football (especially with unfit gits like me with wobbly legs after 10 mins and fluffing passes here there and everywhere), but it was good and even enough for an enjoyable game and a good run around.

So, perfect start and big thanks to all that came - hoping to see you all next week, same time.

To the others waiting in the wings:

We'll still have no probs fitting everyone in who wants to play, i reckon, so come along to the next one:

    Sunday 31st Jan.

    5pm - 6pm

For all: If you're sure to make it next Sunday, can u please post a reply on this thread and then send me a PM with your email address, mobile and name and I'll add you to the list (if u haven't already). We'll consider adding a week day game after the next one i think, if we can get enough confirmed.

Cheers and have a great week (even if like me you'll be nursing some sore calves).

    :)

  15. Ok, court is booked!

    5pm - 6pm

    it costs 600 baht as it's off-peak at 5pm

    [then if we wanted to extend it's 1200 bht/hr - 5pm-9pm].

    So, it's 60-120 baht each.

    Expected for Sunday 24th:

    - me (damaja)

    - Angustan

    - Beejoir (+1)

    - Groovetank + 1 (or +2?)

    - Beechy

    - Luang

    - EmanuelSWE

    Maybe, but not sure:

    - Sure

    - Neutronium

    - ChrisMoss

As you can see we've only got 9 definite (just 10 if Groovetank brings +2), so try bring more if u can.

!- I checked on showers & lockers: No lockers unfortunately. -2 basic cold-water showers in the bathrooms.

!- They have futsal balls there, so I didn't buy one, but if anyone has a good ball please bring along too.

    !- Don't forget:

    kit (Shoes+Shorts+Socks+t-shirt);

    Money (150+ baht);

    Towel;

    Water (though a drinks machine is there);

Shinguards (if u have); Ball (if u have).

Check your PM inbox for my mobile no. etc.

    See u Sunday!

    Adam.

  16. I heartily agree that it will be a shame to lose Suan Lum.

I live here now in Silom (for 7 months now) and have been coming to Bangkok on average 4-6 times a year for business and travel since '98, and I really don't relish the alternatives of Chatuchak (huge & bothersome to navigate and MILES away!), or MBK (tacky and brash and swamped with tat and also a tiring place to get around), or miscellaneous individual shops/stalls up Sukhumvit/Silom (spread around and barely much more competitive with unfriendly, seedy atmosphere around Nana/Patpong esp.).

The prices are higher at Suan Lum for the souvenir shops IF you're a mug and don't bargain well enough - not much better at Chatuchak or MBK for the same products. BUT for the many individual designer's shops it's par for the course and much the same as Chatuchak, only it's much easier to get to and MUCH, MUCH easier to get around. Plus, unlike Chatuchak or MBK, it was open EVERY day until late at night. Many of the stalls are tat, yes, but then that's proportional to shopping in all of Bangkok and there's still many of the stalls (at the Rama 4 end esp.) that are far from tat and have allowed good, creative, enterprising young Thais to start up with fashion/furniture/art/design businesses.

It's been great for our visitors to visit in stead of Chatuchak or because they came during the week when Chatuchak is closed. It's saved us the long trek (usually at least half a day all-in) up to Chatuchak several times and has been a life-saver when trying to think of something to do late evening that doesn't involve spending lots of money or getting drunk or seedy places that we don't like.

If all you ever went there for was the bars and entertainment then I think you were missing the point surely?! And to the detractors, again the question:

Where exactly should one go as a direct alternative to Suan Lum that is in the same area or as easily accessible, throughout the week (that isn't another boring indoor mall like MBK)?

    :)

  17. Ok, updated list for this Sunday 24th (Emanuel confirmed, but Richard unavailable):

    Confirmed for Sunday 24th:

    - me (damaja)

    - Angustan

    - Beejoir (+1)

    - Groovetank + 1 (or +2?)

    - Beechy

    - Luang

    - EmanuelSWE

Probably, but not confirmed yet (check your PM inbox):

    - Sure

    - Neutronium

    Not available (till):

    - JonnyF (Sun 31st?)

    - Chrisdino (Sun 31st?)

    - Bkksteviejai (Sun 31st?)

    - Richard_smith237 (Sun 14th Feb?)

    - MSingh (?)

I'll go ahead and make the booking tomorrow then - hoping that Beejoir & groovetank bring along +1 and +2 or a couple more confirm by Sunday to be sure we have at least 10... pray to the footy spirit? :D

!- I'm not sure about showers & lockers, so I'd assume the place does not have them.

!- I'll confirm the time here tomorrow.

!- I'll try and buy a football tomorrow, but if anyone has one please bring it along too.

!- Don't forget: kit (Shoes+Shorts+Socks+t-shirt); Money (150+ baht); Towel; Water (though a drinks machine is there); Shinguards (if u have); Ball (if u have).

    :)

  18. Ok, for this Sunday 24th, here's what I have for the list update:

    Confirmed for Sunday 24th:

    - me (damaja)

    - Angustan

    - Beejoir (+1)

    - Groovetank + 1 (or +2?)

    - Beechy

    - Luang

Probably, but not confirmed yet (check your PM inbox):

    - Richard_smith237

    - EmanuelSWE

    - Sure

    - Neutronium

    Not available (till):

    - JonnyF (Sun 31st?)

    - Chrisdino (Sun 31st?)

    - Bkksteviejai (Sun 31st?)

    - MSingh (?)

Just need a couple more confirmed players before I make the booking...

  19. Yup I'm in.... dam_n its a hard court, are there not any of those flashy turf ones in Central Bangkok?

Yes, there are some, but the ones I know of are quite far out in places like Ramkhamaeng, Ladprao, etc etc., with no BTS or MRT nearby, so not easy if you don't live near them.

There's possibly a 'rubber tile' court available at the British Club on Silom 18, but haven't checked it out yet, so best to start with the one i know i can get bookings for at short notice.

Also does everyone need to bring 2 shirts? One Red/Blue ?

Don't worry about colours, we'll manage. Though bringing 2 t-shirts is good (along with a towel) as one will undoubtedly be dripping with sweat by the time you finish and there's no showers at the X-Park as far as i know.

  20. Yeh could be up for that :D . Will have a think about it. My shipping arrives next week with my footy socks, shorts and other bits. Same boat as you, used to play in a 5 a side league in the US with a load of expats. 6 years ago tho' so will probably run on looking like Rhonaldino and hobble off like a 70 yr old asthmatic 6 mins later :D still, wouldn't mind giving it a go. Keep us posted.

Cool! About 9+ others interested in playing already, so it's looking good so far.
