  1. This topic is going way off course now ,I would with respect ask the op to contact the moderater to lock it from further comments
  2. totally incorrect the chlorine smell in badly managed pools is in fact combined chlorines, if you are into google research break point chlorination. once again in a badly managed pool stinging eyes and a shortage of breath is down to the formation of nitrogen tri chloride (tear gas) a reaction of hypochlous acid with is actually the killing agent when chlorine is mixed with water. use google correctly and it is all there, most university publish research papers just need to spend a little time. low levels of chlorine are to be highly recommend if you have the time and a good test kit 1ppm is ok with a low ph of 7.2 is possible
  3. once again correct but studies apply to indoor pools the conclusions in most cases were due to incorrect water balance and poor ventilation. the main cause was a high count of THMS in the atmosphere . not really applicable to outdoor pools. but can occur with extremely heavy bather loads in poorly managed pools.
  4. The reason why several of us have divulged the no of years in the industry is because of late there has been some terrible and in some cases downright dangerous advice given by those who think that they know . Yes it is a forum for advice , and in my case is given freely without bias. As proffesionals we are bound to give industry standard advice which is in mot cases the same the world over. By all means if you have a pool and want advice , please post.
  5. There is no good bacteria in a swimming pool any bacteria is bad for your pool Bacteria is only good in a sewage works,
  6. 3 course media and 8 fine , 11 bags in total if i am not correct the official supplier will corect me. Make sure it is reycycled plate glass , other wise you may not get what you expect , beware imitattions are about
  7. It is certainly up to you, if you are happy with your 10 year old river sand and backwash weeklythat really is your choice. People on this forum are certainly lucky bagwain and myself have over 60 years of experience and we are trying to give you and others good solid advice, you asked a question and the answer is yes your pool will look better its your choice no one is twisting your arm. If you wish to help people on this forum please stick to industry standards when giving advice or making statements . Thank you for your input.
  8. If your river sand media has been in for 10 years I would certainly change it to glass media. Siam pools in Chiang Mai is a good port of call he stocks glass media and of course the famous ecco crushed plate glass. You will certainly notice the difference not just in carity but the water will have a certain sparkle
  9. The sand did come out rather well in the study .The reason is that the sand used in the test was a very high quality sand which has a very hard silica content . It is not your usual run of filtration sand . it comes from an area in the UK called Leighton Buzzard as mentioned in the Test. This sand is now becoming rarer as the quarry only has a finite amount and will probably be dearer than glass media now. It is a good filtration media used extensively in the UK, it used to be specified by name by all UK water treatment consultants. I personally have examined this sand that has been in filters for 10 years or more and has not shown any signs of ware. So in my mind the test is skewed by the company commissioning the tests. why not use sand as supplied by the big named suppliers to give a fairer comparison The company in question also produce and supply crushed bottled glass media non AFM why was that not included in their tests.??? AFM have a supplier in Thailand google is your friend. Some one asked a while back how can you tell if the media is worn, very simple really a magnifying glass or a cheap pocket microscope. If he sand shows no sharp edges or has been rounded it is worn out. How to destroy the filter bed in your filter simple again, back wash weekly. Filter beds need 3 or 4 days of use to settle. if fitted go by the pressure gauge fitted on your multiport, following the filter manufactures instruction.Or monthly should suffice. As a general thought , the better end of the pool industry have their own choice of products that they will offer to their clients and will try and push the sale of such item, profit is a small part of this but the main reason that items are tried tested and above all this results in very happy clients.. As a parting thought there may well be a few cowboy companies out there, but from my personal dealings there are more cowboy customers.!!! I am now retired. But if you need any information on pools etc PM @BAGWAIN forum member, Swimming pools Thailand forum sponsors both great minds of information
  10. Ok the usual suspects havent taken the bait, it is a grossly over engineered solution to a fairly simple problem. A simpler solution involves a saddle clamp a few pvc fittings a valve and some one inch hose, answers on a postcard please.
  11. You could try this or a variation of the theme it would have to be made out of pvc or 316 stainless steel The concept is for introducing chemicals into a closed loop boiler system. But should work for your use. If not google dosing pots for a better choice.
  12. Probably will pop ln next week ,what make have you ordered out of interest.
  13. Looking for it to heat in the winter, and cool in the summer any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  14. Prime brands such as astral and certikin are properly graded for filtration and are first class products , i have used many hundreds of tonnes of each, doing a rough ang ready calculation I have been responsible for a good few thousand tonnes of filter media in my working life 9 tonnes on average per filter vessel Comercial and domestic pool filtration work on exactly the same principles save for flow rates, I have been in the industry for 30 years now retired .
  15. That is the point angular filter media is better once sand gets rounded it is u/s
  16. The best silica sand is that supplied by astral or certikin, if you get sand supplied in old rice sacks you will just be getting low grade river sand that will wear out in no time at all. If your budget will run to it both of the above mentioned companies sell top quality graded recycled glass as used in many olympic facilities. Your third choice is recycled plate glass which by its nature is strong and long lasting, and should outlast sand and bottled glass.
  17. Firstly happy new year. Do any of the members that follow this forum have any experience of these air water heat pumps particualy those with a reverse cyle capability it is for a small 12 C/M plunge pool. A particular model I have been looking at is made by a company called Laswim.
  18. Your 8k pump is not going to be very efficient or last as long as it should with an elbow fitted nearly directly to the pump suction. I to do not sell but i have over 30 years in the UK commercial pool industry.
  19. 1. KEEP SUCTION PIPING AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE Include a straight run pipe length equal to 5 to 10 times the pipe diameter between the pump inlet and any obstruction in the suction line. Note: Obstructions include valves, elbows, "tees", and etc. Keeping the pump suction piping short ensures that the inlet pressure drop is as low as possible. The straight run pipe gives you a uniform velocity across the pipe diameter at the pump inlet. Both are important to achieving optimal suction.
