Mexico was flavor of the month only last week when the usual forum suspects gleefully pointed out that Mexico had apparently relaxed or removed ALL Covid travel restrictions on foreigners. Hot debate on food, women, accommodation , quality of life and cost of living ensued. Those ardently pursuing answers to the last couple of questions should read this.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/22/one-canadian-killed-after-tourists-shot-at-mexican-beach-resort-hotel

"... The attack at a luxury hotel compound comes amid a string of shootouts on the Yucatan peninsula’s Mayan Riviera, which have killed or injured tourists who were caught in the crossfire.

A team of at least 10 gunmen stormed a beach at a luxury hotel near Cancún in November, killing a person linked to a rival faction and dragging away another person trying to hide.

A Californian travel blogger and a German tourist were killed in October at a restaurant in Tulum, south of Playa del Carmen, during a shootout between suspected gang members. ..."

So what are you saying?  Is Mexico worse than Thailand or is Thailand worse than Mexico?

I'm already hoping / planning to go to the UK again in May, to stay for some months. Good reasons - 3 Sons and 4 Grandsons + other Family and Friends. Also important also to catch up on the real ales and my local Cricket Club.

Of course, getting back may be a hassle if the Pandemic bubbles . . . in which case, I'll bide my time and find a way. IMO as long as you have somewhere to stay, it's worth a try - I couldn't risk it financially if I was staying in Hotels etc.

My guess is that by then, it's going to be easier than some fear - I may regret that statement later!

Same here, I keep a cheap home in the US just so I won't get caught with my pants down.  It's come in handy a few times, getting sick and needing medical care, the pandemic. Many time I have though about selling but, it has served me well.

So your saying that you can not get to Thailand as the country is closed? is that right, hmm doesn't that beat all.  If that's true where are all of these tourists coming from....

I could come if I wanted to do the quarantine, insurance and what ever else. No sweat.  Doen't means tourism is not dead in Thailand. Thousands.. haha. at 20% GDP.  Only people that are serious are people like you basically. The rest of us will wait until Thailand opens.

The elephant in the room that is being totally ignored is that covid uncovered just how sick people generally are. Western society is a lifestyle disease. Overworked, over-stressed, malnourished, rampant self-treatment (alcohol & drugs) and insurmountable denial. The general public (everywhere) is a mixed bag of co-morbidities waiting to happen, all they need is a trigger, an immune insult to fire them off.

I agree in the US allot of folks are lazy and over weight, but not all. But, definitely a problem. I keep myself in shape and am healthy and travel allot. I got a mild case of Covid after being vaccinated and did just fine, and I am 70. My neighbor was my same age in the US and never exercised and was over weight. Had all kind of issues because of obesity and other things. He was a conspiracy guy also. A preacher and he told me god would protect him.  He died of Covid..

And yesterday Mexico had 45,000 new infections and added 148 to its already high 300,000 deaths. Thailand had 8000 new infections and total deaths added 15 to make under 22,000.

Who does that make silly exactly?

Sounds about equal to me. Mexico is huge. Central America, South America,  are all open. Business as usual. As long as vaccinated you are welcome here. Only way you can tell there is a problem is hand sanitizer everywhere and all wearing masks. It has really opened my eyes to other destinations.

I don't really care anymore, but it looks like SE Asia in general does not want to open. Using Covid as an excuse is all I can think of.

  6. If in Thailand just learning to say No and keeping your finances in order goes a long way. Maybe not completely accepted but I have to say I respected myself and lived a nice life. If not for the air pollution I would still be there. Or in SE Asia somewhere. Personally I liked Malaysia allot also (and I know all the cons of living there). But, I liked Georgetown much better than BKK, for big city living.

Thailand does not specifically target retirees.  From what I saw before Covid.  It attracts a very large number of tourists.  A large number of these tourists don’t come here for a cultural adventure.  They come here to get drunk, party, freelancers, and act stupid. A lot of them are cheap Charlie’s, looking for that discount vacation.  And single men that for the most  part women wouldn’t bother with in their own country..

This is not cultural.  To me culture  is a countries history, food, religion, music, arts.  Some people have said that  the negative behavior of some Thais is  cultural.  Rudeness, trust, aggression, immaturity , is a mindset of an individual. Not an entire  race of people.

Let me help you with that sir.

And single men that for the most part won't bother with the ugly, fat, entitled women in their country.

It's actually a success. Think the Thais are doing a sterling job at controlling and managing entry to their country and are working hard at keeping out those pesky coronavirusus.

Its actually all the unecessary holidaying travellers moving about and catching this stuff and then trying to import it to the countries they are visiting.

I used to think that , but looking at the stats it seems like it is spiking in Thailand just like everywhere else?

Very few genuine tourists, without links to Thailand, are coming the reasons for this are the insurance required, $50,000 has to be stipulated on the document, which is not usually the case when buying a traditional insurance policy, and the having to pay again

    for AXA Thailand (for example)

Also The word getting out about locking you up in hospital  if you test positive.

The paperwork required to gain entry

    No bars open

Genuine  tourists will and are going elsewhere.

I am one of the ones elsewhere. I am watching it close, and would like to come back to visit. Contrary to Thailand's belief there are other places to visit.  Honestly Thailand's sales pitch sounds more like a scam than anything else.  A big pass until they get things sorted out.
