  1. In what is becoming a now all-too-familiar trend, former President Donald Trump’s far-right supporters have threatened civil war after news broke Thursday that the former president was indicted for allegedly taking classified documents from the White House without permission. “We need to start killing these traitorous <deleted>stains,” wrote one Trump supporter on The Donald, a rabidly pro-Trump message board that played a key role in planning the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Another user added: “It's not gonna stop until bodies start stacking up. We are not civilly represented anymore and they'll come for us next. Some of us, they already have.” READ MORE https://www.vice.com/en/article/wxjjgb/trump-supporters-are-threatening-civil-war

  3. A 6-year-old shot his baby brother multiple times in their Michigan home, police said. “Here we are again,” Charles Fitzgerald, assistant police chief in Detroit, said at a June 7 news conference. “Once again another senseless, preventable, horrible incident.” A 1-year-old boy was jumping in a bouncy chair in a home on Tennessee Street when his older brother grabbed a semiautomatic gun, Fitzgerald said. The baby was shot twice, once in the cheek and once in his shoulder. READ MORE https://news.yahoo.com/6-old-shoots-baby-brother-155329893.html
  4. President Joe Biden will appoint a new federal coordinator to address the increase in book bans enacted across different states – part of a slew of new actions that he announced on Thursday aimed at protecting the LGBTQ+ community. Biden announced the actions during a news conference with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He was originally set to host what White House Domestic Policy Adviser Neera Tanden called “the largest Pride celebration in White House history.” The celebration on the South Lawn, which was set for Thursday but was postponed until Saturday due to air quality issues caused by wildfires in Canada, will demonstrate “that LGBTQ people belong in the People’s House,” she said. 5. The Los Angeles county district attorney’s office said Thursday it has left Twitter due to barrage of “vicious” homophobic attacks that were not removed by the social media platform even after they were reported. The account, which went by the handle @LADAOffice, no longer exists on Twitter. “Our decision to archive our Twitter account was not an easy one,” the office said in a statement. “It came after a series of distressing comments over time, culminating in a shocking response to photographs we posted celebrating LADA’s first known entry into a Pride parade.” READ MORE https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-news/los-angeles-county-das-office-quits-twitter-due-barrage-vicious-homoph-rcna88529
  6. Boris Johnson's resignation as an MP has unleashed a torrent of responses from all parts of the political spectrum. But so far we've heard nothing about it from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who he takes an apparent swipe at in his resignation letter, or Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. And there hasn't been anything directly from Harriet Harman, chair of the Privileges Committee, who was so roundly condemned by the former prime minister. However, a statement from the committee moments ago did say that Johnson had "impugned the integrity of the house". READ MORE https://www.bbc.com/news/live/uk-politics-65860705
  7. UPDATE: ‘This is a terrible thing': National security insiders alarmed over military secrets found at Mar-a-Lago Trump is facing 31 counts of violating the Espionage Act through “willful retention” of classified records and six counts related to his alleged effort to obstruct the investigation, according to the 49-page document released Friday. The indictment also alleges that Walt Nauta, a Trump aide during his presidency and now in private life, moved boxes with classified records to obscure them from investigators. The indictment includes information about the kinds of documents in the former president’s possession, some of them “regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign countries; United States nuclear programs; potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack.” READ MORE https://www.politico.com/news/2023/06/09/devastating-former-trump-officials-alarmed-over-military-secrets-found-at-mar-a-lago-00101366
  8. UPDATE: What's in the Trump indictment: US nuclear secrets and files kept in shower The charge sheet notes that Mar-a-Lago hosted events for tens of thousands of members and guests, including in a ballroom where documents were found. Prosecutors say Mr Trump tried to obstruct the FBI inquiry into the missing documents by suggesting that his lawyer "hide or destroy" them, or tell investigators he did not have them. "Wouldn't it be better if we just told them we don't have anything here?" Mr Trump said to one of his attorneys, according to the indictment. 9. UPDATE: Trump aide Walt Nauta indicted in classified documents case An aide to former President Donald Trump has been indicted in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the mishandling of classified documents from the Trump White House, two sources familiar with the indictment tell CNN. Walt Nauta’s indictment is the second in the special counsel’s investigation after Trump was indicted on seven counts on Thursday. An attorney for Nauta declined to comment. Nauta was with Trump at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club this week. 15. The lawyer for Donald Trump’s valet, under scrutiny in the Mar-a-Lago documents investigation, has submitted court papers describing a meeting at which a top federal prosecutor brought up his application to be a judge when they tried to gain the valet’s cooperation last year, according to three people familiar with the matter. The allegation, described in a letter filed under seal with the chief US judge in Washington, James Boasberg, could affect the investigation just as prosecutors are considering whether to bring charges. Even though prosecutors have no control over the success of judicial applications, the fact that it was raised in the context of trying to persuade a lawyer for a witness to recommend cooperating could give the appearance of coercion in one of the justice department’s most high-profile cases. 16. In early May, the parade of witnesses to that grand jury appeared to stop. It turns out, however, that witnesses were still being called — to a federal courthouse a thousand miles south, in Miami. That courthouse is much closer to Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida home and private club, where most of the alleged conduct under scrutiny took place. People familiar with the matter said Wednesday that special counsel Jack Smith and his team are preparing to bring the bulk of any charges in the case in South Florida rather than Washington. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing criminal investigation. 17. President Joe Biden on Thursday blasted efforts across the country to roll back LGBTQ+ protections, referring to proponents of the restrictions as “hysterical” and “prejudiced.” During a joint news conference at the White House alongside British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Biden said the administration’s fight for LGBTQ+ rights is “far from over, because we have some hysterical and, I would argue, prejudiced people who are engaged in all of what we’ve seen going on around the country.” The American Civil Liberties Union is tracking 491 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced across the US since the beginning of the 2023 legislative session. 18. What the Supreme Court’s surprise voting rights ruling means for 2024 The court’s 5-4 decision Thursday morning in Allen v. Milligan found that Alabama’s Republican-controlled legislature had diluted Black voting power by drawing only a single majority-Black congressional district (out of seven statewide seats) after the 2020 census. The ruling will lead to the creation of an additional majority-Black congressional district in the state — eliminating a Republican-held seat and likely giving Democrats an additional seat in the House of Representatives, where Republicans currently hold a 222-213 edge. The decision is a surprise victory for the Voting Rights Act, which was used to bring the challenge to the Supreme Court despite being repeatedly gutted by the high court. 19. Alabama discriminated against Black voters when it drew its seven congressional districts last year, the supreme court has ruled, a decision that is a major victory for the Voting Rights Act (VRA). The decision was 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joining the court’s three liberal justices in the opinion. Writing for the majority of the court, Roberts noted the court was rejecting Alabama’s effort to get it to rewrite its longstanding interpretation of section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which outlaws voting practices that discriminate on the basis of race. The decision means that section 2 of the law, one of its last remaining powerful provisions, will remain intact. 20. The Welsh government's RSE code says from the age of seven pupils will be taught "an awareness of how positive and negative social and cultural norms regarding sex, gender and sexuality influence relationships and behaviours". Lord Justice Males added that diversity and inclusion were "fundamental" to British society. "It is inconceivable that such teaching could be contrary to the common law or the Human Rights Act," he said. "On the contrary, diversity and inclusion (including as to the LGBTQ+ community) are fundamental values of British (including Welsh) society."
