  2. The government has written to the Olympic Games’ biggest sponsors urging them to put pressure on the IOC over its proposals to allow Russian and Belarusians to compete again in international sport and the Paris 2024 Games. In a highly unusual move, the culture secretary, Lucy Frazer, has also asked the UK chief executives of the IOC’s worldwide partners – including Coca-Cola, Intel, Samsung and Visa – to press the IOC over a number of significant concerns it has over the potential easing of the ban. “We know sport and politics in Russia and Belarus are heavily intertwined, and we are determined that the regimes in Russia and Belarus must not be allowed to use sport for their propaganda purposes,” the letter states. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/mar/11/uk-government-takes-fight-over-russian-athletes-ban-to-olympic-sponsors

  10. A day earlier, the New York Times reported that the Pentagon is blocking the U.S. from sharing evidence on Russia’s war crimes with the ICC, citing fears of setting a precedent that could be used to prosecute American soldiers in the future. "What we don’t discuss is the specific forms of support that we may or may not be providing to the ICC,” Price said. “We don’t want to do anything that could jeopardize the sanctity of an investigation, that could set back the pursuit of justice.” https://news.yahoo.com/u-backs-hague-court-investigation-104200004.html
  11. Russia has been capturing some of the US and NATO-provided weapons and equipment left on the battlefield in Ukraine and sending them to Iran, where the US believes Tehran will try to reverse-engineer the systems, four sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Over the last year, US, NATO and other Western officials have seen several instances of Russian forces seizing smaller, shoulder-fired weapons equipment including Javelin anti-tank and Stinger anti-aircraft systems that Ukrainian forces have at times been forced to leave behind on the battlefield, the sources told CNN. In many of those cases, Russia has then flown the equipment to Iran to dismantle and analyze, likely so the Iranian military can attempt to make their own version of the weapons, sources said. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/03/10/politics/russia-iran-ukraine-weapons/index.html

  14. The debate over masks’ effectiveness in fighting the spread of the coronavirus intensified recently when a respected scientific nonprofit said its review of studies assessing measures to impede the spread of viral illnesses found it was “uncertain whether wearing masks or N95/P2 respirators helps to slow the spread of respiratory viruses.” Now the organization, Cochrane, says that the way it summarized the review was unclear and imprecise, and that the way some people interpreted it was wrong. “Many commentators have claimed that a recently updated Cochrane review shows that ‘masks don’t work,’ which is an inaccurate and misleading interpretation,” Karla Soares-Weiser, the editor in chief of the Cochrane Library, said in a statement. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/10/opinion/masks-work-cochrane-study.html
  15. Donald Trump Access Hollywood tape can be used in civil rape trial, judge rules The tape of Donald Trump boasting about sexual aggression towards women that detonated late in the 2016 election campaign but did not prevent him from winning the presidency will be permitted at a forthcoming civil trial in New York. A federal judge ruled on Friday that the columnist E Jean Carroll can use the 2005 remarks by Trump, caught on tape in conversation with an Access Hollywood TV show personality, in support of her lawsuit accusing Trump of raping her in a department store dressing room in the 1990s. Carroll sued Trump for defamation after he denied the rape ever happened or that he even knew the former longtime Elle magazine columnist, after she first described in a 2019 book her encounter with Trump in late 1995 or early 1996. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/10/trump-access-hollywood-tape-evidence-jean-carroll-trial
