  1. I've seen this many times when people swerve too sharply at speed and then have to overcompensate by steering the opposite way which loses control of the vehicle. The knee-jerk reaction is to stand on the brakes which just makes matters worse. Once the vehicle had stopped the driver needs to think clearly and get the vehicle to a safe place asap before the situation gets worse. The time to hyperventilate is when everyone is in a safe position and not when you are stationary facing the wrong way in the fast lane. Lucky it didn't end more seriously. The only way to safely exit this situation is to pass as close to the oncoming vehicle as possible even if it means sideswiping or forcing them into the central reservation. You also have to remember your speed is magnified by the speed of the oncoming vehicle so you cannot afford to make severe maneuvers in a diminishing time frame.

  2. "Another disgusting aspect of the game, when Ref gave penalty & yellow card, to see 3 Chelsea players surround the Ref and demand a red, as if the Ref is going to say " OK lads, you are right, I will change that to red". He should have yellow carded all 3. And the sight of the manager going mental on the sideline, demanding a red. So sad, would not happen in rugby." Quote

They were asking him to use VAR as they thought he got it wrong, which he did, defender never got the ball and he was the last man. No point having VAR if it doesn't get used on contentious decisions.

  3. If it gets too hot I like to decamp to Khoa Kho - 22c there today - its about 2 hours drive for me but it's always cool and Thai's think it's like Switzerland ? Some interesting tips on how to keep your house cool on this thread - I will definitely have to get some vented eves.

  4. I have my SIPP with Alliance Trust and when I move to Thailand next year I will not be telling anyone unless it's to my advantage. I'm a British citizen who is free to travel anywhere and return home whenever I choose. I will only decide to become an ex-pat when it has distinct financial advantages and this has to weighed against losing access to the NHS.

What about the other few joints operating and organising similar events on weekly basis? ?

The other places are clearly up to date with their 'tea money' payments. My wife sold her bar/restaurant to a Thai guy and informed him who to make the protection payments to but he didn't bother so the BiB raided the place and shut it down. It's still boarded up years later.

If one is retired can one apply for a marriage visa..given the amount 40k pm is less onerous than the retirement requirement of 65k  pm.

Yes, you can but they usually encourage you to have a retirement extension as its less paperwork for them. My friend was told he couldn't work with either extension but this isn't true as you can apply for a work permit with a marriage extension but not with a retirement extension.

And so today I have read of countless deaths and attacks and road related deaths, all in all I wonder what the daily death rate in Thailand is if shootings, stabbings road accidents etc were all lumped together ? Truly amazing Thailand.

Life is cheap in SE Asia which is why no heed is taken of health and safety. A cliff collapsed and killed 6 workers at Phetsamut Quarry- no problem just get 6 more workers!

When I was leaving for Thailand in 2004, two good friends back home gave me presents, separately. We'd been joking earlier about me not being able to buy my underwear from M&S so each had bought me 12 pairs of M&S boxers, that left me owning about 30 pairs of M&S undies as I left the UK! I've been careful to rotate them and each pair gets worn once a month and then laundered, only in the past six months has the fabric started to rip and I've thrown them away, the rest are still going strong and the waistbands are just fine - pay a bit bit more for decent qwuality and it lasts.

Have I read this correctly? You only rotate your boxers once a month!

I have to wonder about the intelligence of someone who calls millions of people a fool based on a simple consumer choice !!!...

Having used HTC, Samsung and Apple over the past 6 years or so the iPhone was IMO by far the better phone.

I'm by no means an Apple fanboy, I don't care who makes a product or how fashionable it is... I just want something that does the job properly without issue, without hassles, without hiccups in the most user friendly way possible... Apple seem to consistently meet these requirements.

That said the 'slowing' issue was extremely annoying. Both my Wife and I noticed our iPhone 6 slowing over the past few months. It turns out that this was related to the battery whereby apples software 'clocked back' the phones CPU to maintain battery life. I haven't seen it reported, however, I suspect a simple battery swap may fix this.

A battery replacement does indeed fix the problem. Apple has now admitted the issue and plan to fix in the future but the new battery is a quicker fix.

how long ago was that? friend just died last week, for everything including cremation and monks 120,000 baht
here's the US embassy info page,,,https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/death-of-a-u-s-citizen/ would assume for a thai it would be much easier./cheaper. If I  were u, i'd let the thai side handle everything. as anytime a Farang is involved  all of a sudden the costs go up

I have bought a charity cremation certificate from my local Temple that will be used to cremate a pauper for 800 bht.

OK, I was being facetious. But 50K is derisory recompense for the substantial deposits held by HSBC Expat clients and way below even the modest sum (85k) retail customers of UK banks can claim in the event of a bank collapse.

This compensation scheme is run by The States of Jersey in the event of a bank collapsing. The £100,000,000 cap in any 5 year period could make this figure even lower depending how many accounts the failed bank had. This is what the OP was asking in his second question.

I opened a savings account in 2016 at the Bangkok Bank with a tourist visa. A Thai national has to 'recommend' you. Was quite a simple procedure. I don't have an International Driving License.

    2. Foreigner with Long-stay or Tourist Visa

    • Passport
    • A Letter of Reference issued by: (One of the following)
      • Embassy or international organization
      • Customer’s home bank to Bangkok Bank via the SWIFT messaging network
      • Person acceptable to Bangkok Bank e.g. branch officer, customer, government officer or company executive
      • Educational institution located in Thailand and acceptable to the bank
      • Company that is acceptable to the bank, confirming the customer is in the process of getting a work permit

Just to keep thing current - I opened a Bangkok Bank Account in Nakhon Sawan this August just gone. My wife has an account there and she acted as my referee. I only have a visa exempt and Thai Drivers Licence (which I also got with just a visa exempt). I think if you stay away from popular tourist areas things are much easier.
