  1. Lets look through the topics around this one.

10th anniversary party at Old Belle

    Bakery Courses

    External Hard Drive failed

    Electricity use calculations

    Chiang Mai eats map

    AFL grand final

    The great avocado rip off

Yep, I can see the need now.

No one should have to pay 65 baht for an imported avacado. Its criminal.

I'm with Thailandbert on this one, never felt threatened....but I would be if I saw a concealed carry weapon....and yes they can often be identified especially when someone wants to impress as a casual warning with a jaunty swing of the cardigan.

  2. Like so many have said before, stay away from the area directly East of the Ping (round the Iron and Nawarat Bridges). Stayed last year at the far end of Kong Sai Road (near Dr Wong's Hospital) and twas waist height........inside sad.png

Ugly things come out of the drains/sewers...very ugly things. Never had a cockroach upstairs until it flooded downstairs then there were so many and so close it was becoming a bit intimate.

Not may places to rent directly round this area anyway (other than shophouses) but regardless if you are further east of this (train station onwards) there was still some localised deep and expanive puddles, and making your way into town is a hassle.

Directly east is definately "prone" .

  3. The nearest I know to something like this is occasionally (maybe every 6 to 8 weeks) there is a trade show next to the chamber of commerce on Thung Hotel Road. It has lots of stalls (inside under cover) mainly textiles but at other times will feature machinery (embroidery, solar panels etc). It actually gets pretty packed mainly with Thais. Quite a bit more upmarket than a usual Thai market and the Thais that go are a bit more affluent. They have some static interior design displays as well but less than a handful more as a background to Thai crafts.

No matter what the theme of the overall expo is there is always plenty of textile/fashion displays (and for sale). Unless you drive down Thung Hotel Road you never see the banners across the street, and in front of the commerce building for about two weeks before. A few days before we get the trucks drivinground blaring that it is on. Also see it advertised on CM108. imagine you could quite easily make connections there to bulk buy and export but its not the type of place where you find lots of international buyers if you have goods to sell. Quality wise it can be very good range/prices (by Thai standards) for textiles and some fashion items.

  4. I'm surprised why this 'flaming/criticising' the OP, a sponsor is going on. Are there different rules for different sponsors? Just because he doesn't sell sausages or have a wellknown restaurant in CM, he should be treated equally IMO. Could it be a nationality issue?

Said sponsors have not promoted or claimed that they have a way of working round Thai law to enable me to purchase a sausage or meal. Apparently their purchase is perfectly legal by a non Thai.

i like sausages, I like meals, not too keen on questionable real estate promotions however.

Hate or nationality doesn't come into it. Its not like Op is a brussel sprout (or a scouse).

There has been no slander as such merely a dispute of what the Op is promoting to what many of us widely accept as being lawful in Thailand. I have seen nothing from Op that would change my mind, but would have some level respect if it came from an acknowledged reliable and informed source. To that end some answers to KJN's post would not go astray.

This topic should not be closed, if for nothing else in that it makes a casual user aware that many long term expats consider what is being offered as highly questionable. If anything a public service is being performed (I have a work visa honest), there is almost a civic duty to speak up on posts such as this.

  5. Let's keep it simple.

Name of your registered company. when was it formed?

What percentage do you own? Not wife, BIL, Friend Somyak or anyone else, your stake?

How many references of your work are you willing to publicise?

How many properties have you handled in the last 2 months?

Are you fluent in Thai ( read and talk, ) and Thai legislation?

How many staff do you employ?

Ye gads sir I, think you have gone too far.

Next you'll want integrity in real estate, then integrity in real estate in Thailand, then integrity in real estate in Thailand with a Russian connection, the integrity in real estate in Thailand with a Russain connection and experience and competence.

You go too far sir, much too far.

Op, I have a bridge in Sydney I am interested in selling. Can you send your quote (and accompanying agent bidding fee of 2.6 million baht) to my bank in Lagos?

Legally owning property (land) by a non Thai as a sole holder outside the investment regime is a fiction.

If anyone is seriously pursuing this fantasy......I have an as viable alternative, magic beans that will give you property rights (one Rai blue bean, two Rai red bean, three Rai with water/mountain views yellow bean) contact my bank in Nigeria.......

  6. I watch TV only when I go to bed at night, I spend the earlier evening sharing my rancid thoughts here or on other blogs to much disinterest or applying my beloved Veet. Being married, whore mongering holds no interest but for those single I can appreciate how it would, use it or lose it...

When the other system packed in we converted to some ad funded True system where you get one movie channel with the occasional good movie and a few English knowledge programs about supperating penises and failed boob operations huh.png (Is this what you Pomms watch at home, explains at lot), the rest is Thai standard plus cartoons which the wife and kids watch. Also saw an interesting Japanese program on Alzheimers and Dementia, there seem to be no US programs on the knowledge channels, can't imagine why.

I dumped True years ago for WETV that eventually also became crap so I dumped that and went alternate (can't really say I am missing Aljazeera's 24 hr monologue on the joy of Palestinian life, would prefer multiple root canal with an ice pick). So now I have several hard drives and download, plus can get good Blu rays at Panthip. I have more than I can watch, so True and their HD can suck eggs, I am still better sorted. Would like to see the Aussie Rugby League as sports with real men and gratuitous violence are enjoyable, unlike pussy soccer, but that is a latter post for the edification of the Gay Forum.

    Real men like Ian Roberts?

  7. I think I'm with Beetlejuice on this one, but happy to be corrected if someone can prove the incident took place. Given the supposed newspaper articles and photos that "exist", I'm sure it shouldn't be too hard to prove.

Special Forces sitting in a CM bar and telling you they are Special Forces...also highly doubtful.

You been had...but they enjoyed the free beer.

And once more for the audience at home.

    http://www.cm108.com...ca-uoacaoaaeae/

It happened but nothing like the op posted.....

And there were no free drinks.

Jason (the then owner, i love you man if you are reading this) is as tight as a fishes arsehol_e at ten fathoms

  8. I digress.....

You could also ask Jason who used to own the Flash Bar, he has sold it but I stil think he has the small "alfresco" bar across from Mike's hamburger joint. He probably even has a recording. Flash Bar had two cameras set up covering the bar after Jason was injured by a "patron". The cameras were in plain view if you looked in the corners. It always then suprised me when a few long term 50 plus year old expats (may have missed an "s" there) and their girlfriends/wives had a blue in the bar (two that I saw involved fisticuffs, and one a slash) still drank there. They new the cameras were there and still after a few sherberts were unable to act with a modicum of decency, apart from the fact that do not take your wife to a girly bar, and if you do, do not act suprised and offer mock excuses "must have mistaken me for someone else, with the same name, same nationality, also circumsized" when all of the bar "staff" know you name

  9. If you want to convince people, than give some facts, otherwise this is just another, a man told me in a bar story.

Isn't a "man told me in a bar" story just like a TV poster saying it must be true because my son is a policeman story? coffee1.gif

If I remember correctly , some posters on this thread made mention to photos taken for the newspaper, or photos taken,,,,, then how about elaborating more on those posts. Like a link to the newspaper story or a link to a photo taken, etc....

If there is a link or a photo posted then we can all assume it wasn't a Hollywood made up screen shoot.

How about a link or some further back up rather than just he said , she said stories

    G

    Gonzo

    May have been me.

Cannot find all the links but here is one but in Thai, some of the fllow up comments are a laugh and a half quite a few pages of dribble and not one Thai in the bar at the time other than "staff" and owners wife, I don't think they made any of the posts. Almost like Thaivisabiggrin.png

As I said though, there was no follow up report (i looked at the time), you will note Flash Bar as per my earlier comment, and again no photo's with lots of guys in uniforms and ribbons, this all died a silent death.

Now you know the big secret....."it happenned"

  10. I am as guilty as anyone of profound sarcasm, which in fairness is the lowest form of wit (so they say) but it is mainly a UK trait and not often understood or followed by other nations.

It is used so often on here, whereby the user speaks of something the complete opposite of what the user means for comedy value aswell.

Ex. 1: "I'm okay. Don't mind the gaping wound and the sword protruding from my back. I'm fine. I feel like a million dollars."

    Ex. 2:

"Is your car stuck in the mud?"

"No, no, of course not. I'm only practicing how to spray mud using my tires.

So it can be interpreted as offensive or even stupid even though it seriously isnt.

It would help if we all had a small flag on our avatar so we can see where each of us originates; then us Brits no how far to push in our replies

In full agreement, British humour is very unique.

Perhaps the flag mechanism for Brits could also be used to inhibit any UK citizens commentary regarding postings on on food or fine dining.clap2.gif

  11. Kawila had a fire go through it I guess about two years ago. Allegedly it was going to get fixed up but so far zip nil nada. Always thought they would have to go somewhere else as parking when it was on was a nightmare (as in there was none) and could not really fit all that wanted to go in. It was pretty packed every time when I went there, guess as CM got bigger more and more wanted to go to the only credible venue. Every now and again you do see people working at fixing it up, buts its pretty slap dash effort and inconsistent pace (I walk past it a few times a week). Its been opening "soon" for months (as far back as August last year), Don't think you are going to have much luck. The TP and Loi Kroh fights (even when they have the international fights) are no way as fast, no elbow use, and shock horror possibly rigged. I'm clinging to the thin thread that Kawila might open again, fixed but not "refitted".

  12. Vegemite is available in Rimping supermarkets. Due to Australia's burgeoning free trade deal with Thailand it is 190 Baht whereas Marmite is 379 baht for a similar sized jar. And we all know which one is best don't we!!

    Vegemite eaters certainly do

Vegemite eaters know Marmite is best?, Why do they eat it then?

Of course the price would be closer if third world countries had a stable safe haven currency like Australia and Thailand tongue.png

  13. WOW I have a 500 sq mtr house with swimming pool and have to pay the developer 5 bht per unit and I have never paid more the 3500 for a month of electricity

finally an excellent description with a wealth of detailed information how long a specific piece of string can be.

this encourages me to mention our details. we have a 622m² house which we keep at an average temperature of 26-26.5ºC and our last electricitity bill (may 21 till june 19) was 545 Baht and 59 Satang.

But how many aircon units and what BTU? Facts, we want facts, biggrin.png

Back to the OP, I live in a shophouse, its huge (sorry never that worried about the area) but have high ceilings both floors, large rooms, and just operate with fans, large industrial ceiling and portable (matter of choice rather than finance). Would be a really bad month if I ran over 1000 baht.

Even with aircon in Australia in three rooms, multiple fridges, tvs etc if I came to a bill of $300 plus AUD (about 10000nht) for a month of power i would be amazed (and more likely shocked, and angry)...and power here is cheaper.

I can understand using aircon, but even your old studio price is a shocker to me.

Maybe you ought to look at not running units 24/7....I don't do that even in Australia over summer with the temperature being higher than here though not the humidity. Better construction, insulation, tiling have all altered the temp of my house, but even before I did all that I had one big open plan lounge/kitchen/dining room with a 2hp unit in use in daytime with aircon on from maybe 10.00am, turn on bedroom/s aircon an hour before I and kids retire, switch off lounge unit, and so ad infinitum. Would never run all units at the same time......not doing any good for anyone at night, and room does not heat up at night that much anyway when aircon has been running in the day.

But I digress (old age pls forgive me). The cost itself does not to me seem inconsistent with your use. If thats the use you want or need, thats the price you pay. Everyone here is consuming differently but the price you are paying seems reasonable to me (though perhaps not the consumption).,

  14. What the boys from Pattaya were up for the weekend?

Yes as I recall they were Cobra Gold. By no means wishing to diminish these guys but the only direct Special Forces link was that they were training with Thai Special Forces and staying with the Thai special Forces camp at Mae Rim. I know one guy was a sniper instructor and they had some Korean Special Forces, and US Special Forces there at the same time.

  15. What utter dribble...is this really passing for news now. A police crack down on bars. Perhaps we could have an exclusive follow up on double pricing, short changing, and helmet fines. This is almost like saying today is Thursday.....

As far as the bar and "special forces". It was the Flash bar, they were US troops but not "Special Forces", there was ONE police officer that did something very silly and got his handgun taken off him, He had a very insignificant redness to his face from an altercation, and the issue became one of saving face as it would anywhere for Police, Right or wrong anywhere you do not take the hand gun off a police officer and expect no action. Others attended as a show, a photo taken for the news, and it all died a gentle death. Why did it die, because there were to many witnesses and the ONE police officer was an ass. The others quickly realised that the situation was not retrievable and made it go away. They were really good about it.

No one went to hospital except the one officer, where another photo was taken for the news....with unusually no other officer in the photo.

Sorry...i was there....and the next night as well. No close down, no one taken away...all good. I have seen more reaction over not having a music license.

  16. Things change, things change, rinse repeat.

But reading through these posts all I can think of is Monty Python's Four Yorkshire men sketch, and that was 1971!

Things do change, all life is transient, etc etc, unfortunately some people's miserable outlook does not. Apprecaie what you have, and folks that is in the here and now.

Some posts remind me of my first meeting with expat Rhodesians, which were quickly nick named "whenwewozs".

"when we was in Rodesia we......(fill in gap)"
