  1. Although the tanker driver is clearly in the wrong, (too fast, ignored the stop sign, perhaps trying to turn too sharply when/if he did see the m/c at the last minute) the motorcyclist appears to have done a couple of things that probably didn't help.
From the video it looks as if he was still pulling out from the left filter lane into the middle lane to go straight on, as he "clipped" the hashed area.  Being so far left as he approached with the vegetation on the verge would have obscured his view of anything coming out of the side road.
(I accept that m/c's should stay in the far left of the left lane and he was probably safer there than being in the middle lane, but he was perhaps a little too late in moving across).  Whilst moving across to the right he may have been closely watching his mirror to check for cars coming up behind him and so noticed the tanker a fraction of a second later than he might otherwise have done.  Also, being used to driving on the other side he may have been "looking the wrong way" and not expecting a vehicle coming from the left at such a speed.

I'm not making any excuses for the (w)tanker.  He should be hung out to dry, but there are a couple of lessons to be learned for anyone who rides a m/c here:-
Always expect the unexpected... and always be prepared to stop.  Even a soi dog running out can be enough to cause you to lose control.
Stay as wide as possible (where it's safe to do so) when coming to a side junction, to give maximum visibility into the side road, and avoid making last minute changes of lane or direction.
Don't drive too fast especially in unfamiliar areas.  (I was trained to be able to stop completely in the distance I can see to be clear.. and that includes other vehicles, pedestrians (or dogs) suddenly appearing in front of you.)

It doesn't matter if you have the right of way... in the event of an accident, having the RoW will rarely save your life.   So ride defensively and avoid being in an accident.
Too right 100% thats what I meant but your much better than me explaining, well.done.

  2.
I find  your reply born of pure ignorance but I'm not surprised.

"The truck or any vehicle is supposed to stop or at least slow down on reaching that juncture. That gives oncoming traffic an chance to react. Slow down or to change lane."

You just don't get it I think.

What they are "supposed" to do doesn't matter.    What they in fact do do  is what matters!

GEE..    I hope that clear enough for you.

Thanks for your reply none the less.

Your right he just dont get it, use your head here, "right of way" you got to be joking here if I tjought about that O would have been brow bread many times over in Thailand.

  3. This has been explained multiple times on this thread.

Firstly the video is in slow motion not actual speed.

Secondly the Italian couple were in the correct lane with the right of way.

Thirdly the tanker driver came through a red STOP sign at speed.

Fourthly the junction only allows a limited view of vehicles entering from the left so the Italian couple would have had sight of the tanker and time to react for less than 2 seconds.
They turned right across into the junction and wide going partly over the the white triangle as if they decided to to turn at the last minute or too quickly the tanker was turning left on its correct side and forward of the bike that should of given wat to something so big the fault is fully with the tanker driver 10 years experience driving trucks but a tanker full of liquid does not handle the same as a truck but the I feel bike was neglectful and lacked bike riding experience especially here.
Driving is not all about right of way especially here in Thailand its about using your head and eyes and taking care which from the video the bike did not do by getting too close to the Tanker.

An Italian couple were killed after an oil tanker overturned at a junction in Chumphon on Thursday.

The couple named as Giuliano De Santis, 42, and Ilaria Rizzo, 37, were travelling by motorcycle along the Pak Nam Road in Pak Nam Subdistrict when an oil tanker lost control and overturned crushing the couple.

Police and rescue workers were called to the scene of the accident at 4.30pm on Thursday where they found the 10 wheel Isuzu had overturned, spilling thousands of litres of fuel over the road.

The 64 year old driver of the tanker, who was unhurt, said he had been hired to deliver fuel to gas stations in Chumphon province.

He said he had more than ten years experience driving trucks and had never had an accident before.

The driver said as he approached the junction the brakes didn’t work properly causing him to lose control of the tanker, which resulted in it overturning and landing on top of the couple.

However, a witness told police that he saw the tanker approach the junction at speed and attempt to make a left turn, which is when the vehicle overturned.

The witness said initially he wasn’t aware that anyone else was involved in the accident as he quickly took his grandchildren away from the scene as he could see large amounts of fuel spilling out onto the road.

Police said the Italian couple had arrived in Thailand on 21 February and were here on holiday. Manager reported that another foreign couple, believed to friends of the deceased, were travelling behind the couple when the accident occured.

Police added that it took nearly two hours to clean the road of the fuel and recover the overturned vehicle.

The driver has been held pending further investigations.

The poor couple that died were not fully without care driving wide round the corner and getting too close to the tanker why didnt they let it pass first seeing that it had right of way and passed it after on the straight road

Not nonsence at all that is not proof at all as I said the bike was still in the wrong hitting the car, overtaking is always a risk so in the wrong there is too possibly speeding, not taking care, too near to the vehicle in front.

A lot of talk here but the fact remains if you hit someone from behind or get hit while trying to overtake you are in the wrong end of story.
It says hit on the back corner during,
a U turn according to the Thai version. Firstly how did they know he was Uturning. Secondly what else could they say after hitting the car, the first thing that came into their head because U turning is a normal thing for Thais but not for Farlangs.
Also poor Thaivisa one sided heading

always blame person with more money, BUT not that much more money (or they have power).  Of course blame farang for coming here and creating an unsafe atmosphere.  Farang, you pay 200,000 baht, help this country, go home, but come back in 30-days ok, but next time you bring 300,000.  farang should never have been driving, and could have been much safer at the intersection.  I always get out of my car, look, have 100 cameras, ask everyone if safe, check from my drone... then i go.

    Are you mao???

Fixable .! Are they having a laugh .. Look at the state of it .. And if it were " fixed " up who would really want to go aboard that again knowing its history ..

I believe they mean that these things were fixable before the disaster happened. Now its only scrap and the money they get from the auction should go to the relatives of the deceased whatever the amount might be but here I don't think it will somehow.

  10. esterday I went to the FoodMart supermarket in Jomtien, I bought a small can of soft drink and a small packet of crisps the cashier was putting the 2 items in a large plastic shopping bag until I told her I don't want the bag there were no signs anywhere to be seen and even if there was there is not much point if you don't train your cashier staff.

Environment day nothing but a joke its always the general public to blame and rightly so in certain cases but if the big companies who don't give a damn and only think about the amount of profit they make were made to not use plastic for their products then their would be no plastic waste for the general public to be dumped anywhere.

In other words ban plastic wrapping and plastic bags and you have resolved plastic waste by at least 50% i'm sure, its not complicated I am not picking on Thailand its the same everywhere its all to do with profit money talks in the world we live in.

I went to my local Big C yesterday, on "Thai Environment" day. I (literally) had to argue with the cashier to use the plastic bags that I had brought in with me, despite signs up all over the place saying that there were no plastic bags available because of... wait for it... Thai Environment day.

If Thailand wants to improve its environmental record (and, it damn well should), then it will require government action, legislation and political will.

Based on yesterday's performance, I say zero for three.

Thailand is truly blessed with stunning natural beauty, but if/when it is covered in garbage it becomes yet another third-world, mismanaged s**t-hole.

Obviously you don't know Thailand all that well. They have mountains here just to help you understand, and good views too if you take the time to look for them.

Agreed... There are many beautiful places in Thailand I do a road trip now and again when I have time in my SUV not a bicycle and found many stunning places and sights and lovely people.

It is too dangerous to cycle here I would never dream of it.

RIP to another victim of scumbag minibus drivers I hate the lot of them.

I just had a bad experience using one to go to Buriram Moto GP it was a VIP 6 seater one thinking it would be better then the usual mini-busses I took a Grab taxi for the return journey home even though the minibus was booked, never again I would rather walk.
