  1. I can understand if somebody has lived in Dayton, OH a whole life but these Western expats who stay in Asia for years and cannot in general tell different nationalities apart in general to me, boggles the mind, I just do not get it.

There definitely is a Korean/Japanese/Chinese "look". There are variations of course on this theme. We've got one Japanese friend, I don't think she looks Thai but the Thais do, speak Thai to her and she has even been denied entry to her own BKK hotel when a guard thought she was a "slapper"! If one sees more than one Korean in town they will be speaking Korean, it has a certain distinct sound does it not? I don't speak Farsi but I know what it sounds like. I'm not saying I can tell one obscure dialect from another but one should be able to tell Cantonese from Mandarin from Chinese and Korean and other major languages of the world by sound only.

So of I see somebody speaking Korean, looking Korean, holding a LOTTE DUTY FREE shopping bag or something with Hangul on it its pretty clear.

There are other clues, like fashions, and demeanors. About 8 years ago almost EVERY Japanese girl in her twenties had a cute "mashu" haircut died some shade of brown. Koreans mostly had black hair, and some fashionable Korean girls were still wearing those horrid ankle length stockings one only sees on Grandmas! And the tight perms middle age Korean women sport, they are considered comical in Japan. Can tell them a mile away.

Are people really this gormless or do they just not pay attention? One guy with 10 years experience working in a multicultural environment in Asia with many nationalities as colleagues admitted to me he is clueless. Languages, it all sounds like "ching chong noise" (his words). "Akiko Hashimoto or Ji-Young Lee" has no significance and the reason he can tell Philippinas from Thais is "they speak English". Can't tell a Korean newspaper from a Japanese one. This is very surprising to me as it seems so obvious.

Here is an example sentence “This is a Dutch dictionary” in Japanese, I thought this sentence up as it has hiragana , katakana, and kanji. Cant vouch for Google translate but followed by Chinese and Korean これはオランダ語辞典です 这是一个荷兰语字典 이것은 네덜란드어 사전 입니다

These scripts have a distinct appearance. As for the rest of the crass generalizations on this thread most exists only in the minds of those who have brought their Eurocentrism and subtle bigotry with them from abroad and have learned nothing from years pontificating from a Chiang Mai barstool. I know plenty of Westerners with proper Korean brides, (Only one for sure picked up from a bar near some US base. Now a housewife in the states where most military wives her age have tattoos also ).

  2. Others have ear canals blocked with wax that becomes foetid and lousy with Fungus.

I don't know how this happens I would think I would feel itchy.

Actually I must be cleaning ears daily with bamboo mimikaki (耳かき) as is common in Japan but fortunately have the gooey type of wax, does form these huge plugs.

Sometimes a little alcohol on a cotton swab, Mum used to pour it in my ears after surfing. Did not hurt and I never got ear infections.

  3. Westerners with dry type cerumen blockage and have never had it properly removed will

be shocked what comes out of their ears. In these cases heat does not help. The wax must be removed manually

with a curette or other implement.

  4. I've read about it and I've even seen statistics about it but, is it just me or are Korean ladies really scarce in Chiang Mai and on Thai specific dating sites? Information tells us that there are more Korean's living in Chiang Mai with direct flights from Korea than any city in Thailand yet, I've only seen but a few college girls on the occasional Saengtaew ride in my 4 years living here. In short, where do they hang?

If that is a photo of a Korean model it must be at least 20 years old. You won't find one with large bushy eyebrows like that or anywhere else anymore.
  5. What's with all the sanctimonious drivel here? One of the reasons I like this country is that if you have enough money, you can buy your way out of any sort of trouble.

Spoken like a true morally responsible upstanding, self-centred citizen of the world, this country needs a lot more people just like yourself so it can advance from the dark ages.
I'd be interesting to see this person's response if the one's killed were his kids or relatives. I think we'd have gotten a different response.
    Correct.

He didn't quite get his name correct, he made mistake by adding push.

  6. If it was an airplane like the one pictured it was most likely a crew error by setting the pressurization controller wrong. I worked the industry for 35 years and never saw a major problem Usually crew error.

Could be a crew error resetting the pressurization panel after a "bleeds- off" takeoff, as would probably be required for performance reasons at these temperatures.

Happened before, will happen again. "Rubber jungle" being usual result.

  7. The middle aged European tourist on Nimmanhemin Road who protested his behaviour to ambush and spray freshly showered and dressed women with a pressure-activated water pistol, at 22:00 hours, is just part of the Songkhran Festival!

  8. She could probably buy a pack here for the price of two in Germany.

I'm a dumb American so I don't know if she was German, Swiss, Austrian, from Sudtirol, or where ever but she should have the brains to know if they can't scan it they can't sell it! I did not say anything because almost every time I tried to help out a gormless Farnung (without invitation) here they shouted abuse or manifested unrestrained hostility.
  9. To all of you against the celebration. Your all a bunch of whingers. This is an annual Thai tradition, Christmas and the likes is not, and yet they cater for that for foreigners. If you don't like the Thai traditions then leave, rather than whinge and moan. I know who are the ones the need to grow up, the ones whinging about it rather than the ones celebrating it for what it is.

And will YOU leave when the country runs out of water.
It does seem wasteful but I wonder if water fights really mean anything compared to daily industrial and agricultural use, which could be officially curtailed (at great economic cost).

By the way the fancy salon that cuts my toenails in Chiang Mai had NO water pressure today. My hands and feet were washed with the large drinking water jugs they had to run out and buy. About 2 hours ago it was real cloudy here and looked like it would rain but it cleared.

    Pray For Rain Please!

  10. Target the source of the problem, tourists patronise animal touts should also be punished.

90 days CUSTODY and fine $USD10,000. After a few are jailed word will get out in international press and problem sorted, If somebody approached me on the beach to sell drugges I would ignore them. Obvious this is the same kind of thing so why are the foreigners who support it blameless?
