  1. Thanks for the input. Yes I do the same if i stop more than a moment.

I can understand things needs replacement after 100k or 150k km, but my car only has 60k on the clock.

I think it's a bit early for everything to start packing in. My old BMW 540iA went 170k before the first major thing failed (that happened to be the automatic gearbox which almost cost more to fix than the car was worth so that was when I sold it.)

Another caution about buying a used car. 555

  2. Because there are too many people buying new cars because they want to get the 100,000฿ rebate before the government offer expires.

If you ask the salesmen there might be cars available with no wait, where someone paid the ordering fee (10k or so) and ordered but then changed their mind. You don't get to choose the customizations, but you also don't have to wait. This is what we did, as 3-4 months was too long to wait

Exactly how I ended up getting a new car, not really the color I wanted but new car in 5 days.

I'm wondering what customizations you talk about. I'm under the impression everything comes in a package based on the model of car. Sure, they offer floor mats and chrome exhaust pipe extensions and etc but I don't see much else.

    Would you please enlighten me?

    TIA.

  3. When l am on my own l smoke in the motor with the window open. BUT, yes you can smell the fag. Soooooooooooo she doesn't moan l put the aircon on recycle, no air from outside, spray some house hold air freshener in side and leave for a few minutes with engine idling. Job done, no smell. thumbsup.gif

Well, that's just what they did. Sprayed some air freshener... And took away the low-quality plastic stinking mats. We'll see if that solves durably the problem. They are now hitting me with a 2.700 THB price tag for replacement mats for Pajero (look a bit like those MRO posted some times ago).

In a very thai manner, they assured nobody of the dealership smoked in the car... Then, as I suggested it might be the option mounters... "Maybe"... LOL

One thing is delaying: the English owner manual. Pushed back by one week again. The dealer was suggesting me to go to Chonburi, Pattaya or Hua Hin to request it from one of the local dealers.... w00t.gif

My PJS had a pretty unpleasant smell to it when new as well but I don't think that it was actually cigarettes. Maybe the rubber mats or something from the manufacturing or delivery process. Whatever it was it went away after some time with a bit of air freshener, and the usual cycle of time, mileage, and cleanings.

I think that that was a "new" car smell and not a cigar...my new Ranger smelled very strongly first few days, but now is better already.

I've always thought the "New" car smell was supposed to be a good one.

  4. Well, after all, the "Elephant" will be born with one day advance! As my saleslady is celebrating her daughter's graduation on Saturday, she asked me if she could postpone or advance the delivery... So, will be having all that done tomorrow.

I armed myself with the long checklist (see one of my previous posts), and will be doing the exam pre-delivery... Tomorrow, they told me they are doing the rust protection and the coating + installing all the options (mats, rear camera, etc).

Without questioning their honesty, I am a bit worried that they might skip the process if they are afraid not to deliver the car in time...

But let's be positive! More news tomorrow.

    I hear 'ya!

Though I wish I had that ceck-list a few weeks ago when I went to pickup my new car, in all actuality, it was a smooth process and all was in order as it usually is - you seem to have a nice rapport with your salesperson plus these guys have been doing prep work for thousands of cars - so I wouldn't overly worry if I were you, but verification never hurts.

    Good luck!

    Trust but verify?

"so I wouldn't overly worry if I were you, but verification never hurts."

I'd like to think anything overlooked upon delivery other than scratches would be handled by the cars warranty.

    Is that the case?

Okay, first of all, i doubt you recieved a 12 month multi entry VISA at your local immigration office. For one thing, they don't do VISA here.

What you probably got is a EXTENSION for 12 nomths of your current VISA that brought you into Thailand.

My actual one year multi entry visa was given on October 15, 2010 from the Thai consulate in Hull, England.

My first 12 month extension was until 15 October 2011, a second extension until October 15, 2012, and I'm now on my 3rd extension until 15 October 2013.

So almost surely that's what you got ... a one year extension of your original visa .... the one that allowed you to rnter Thailand.

The extension is what you do 90 day reporting on, not the original visa.

Now, when you're on extension, and youwant to travel outside of Thailand and keep your exiension valid, you can get a exit re-entry permit.

A multi exit reentry permit is good for the period of your extension and that multi entry costs 3800 Baht, It allows you to exit and re-enter as many times as you like during that time period of that extension. In my case, because my crrent extension is until 15 October 2013, i therefore could purchase a multi exit re-entry for 3800 Baht and exit and re-enter thailand on that permit (stamped in my passport) as many times as I wanted up until 15 October 2013,

Then i would need to apply for another extension of my original visa for another year until 15 October 2014.

If i wanted to I could then purcase anothe multi esit re-entry permit which would be good until that new extension ended.

There is a difference btween the actual VISA that you got outside of Thailand and that you first entered Thailand on , and any EXTENSIONS you ecieve at your local immigration Thailand.

Many people mistakethe two things, but they are different.

    Nice and straightforward....

I agree with you completely, Rinrada.

IMA_Falang managed to take no umbrage with my post and simply offered a concise clarification. I appreciate it. I was given the wrong understanding on an earlier thread when I was told a single unused reentry permit I paid for could be carried over past my extension deadline. I do know better now.

  6. Very informative thank you. Does this mean that you pay VAT on the Excise and Interior Duties? I am just trying to work out how much profit the dealer makes on my upcoming Vigo Champ so I can negotiate more goodies easier.

The salesperson gets 7-8% comission from the sales price...

Are you pretty sure about this? They hardly seem enthusiastic when a customer enters the showroom. I've wondered about their compensation.

  7. This has been going on for a decade of more. The jet ski operators of Thailand are one of the lowest life forms on the planet. Lower than vermin, or cockroaches. A garden insect has more nobility than these cretons. The police know it, most tourists know it, and there have been countless news shows done on these insects. So, why do they still ply their trade, and steal from foreigners EVERY single day? Because the police allow them to, and only when they get bad press, do they stir into action. Which leads us to believe only one possibility, right? Jet skis should be banned entirely. They destroy the local environment, the operations are mostly criminal, and they are a boil on the face of Thailand.

Wonder how most tourist aren't already aware of the scam and thus avoid the jet skies altogether.

  8. In a case like this, is the accused held on remand or given bail?

If convicted, would he be deported (after serving time in Thailand) and, if so, would he face charges in the US?

Bail is possible, if convicted it means blacklisting.

There will be no charges in the US if he is sentenced in Thailand. You cannot be convicted twice for the same offence. If he would skip bail and flee the country to the US he could face prosecution in the US.

Are you sure about that? He would not have been tried and convicted twice in a US court of law.

  9. As cdnvic notes, it's not just Thailand. Most Asian cultures are the same to a greater or lesser degree, try asking for directions in Korea.

It's the same in business, always ask questions in a way where the respondent can answer in a positive manner even if the answer is in the negative.

    GPS only for me.

  10. The biggest mistake he made was !!

Paying the right police officers !!!!!!!!

It is 100% sure that big police are involved in drug trade in that area, how else can normal people see one after another who sell drugs ?

Are the Bangkok police blind ??

Or just been blindfolded by money !!!!!

    CORRUPTION CORRUPTION

I had an issue with a book a friend sent me. I wonder if it's contingent somehow on if you buy the book from Amazon on their Kindle platform.

  11. Thailand needs to learn how to have better insensitivity to Shi* and criticism. Many TV members could probably help. Anytime a country gets rilled up about a video it smacks of the idiots in the middle east and I'd rather not be considered one of them.

I'd say get a grip and take a chill pill, Thailand.

  12. You do not get a Multi entry visa at Immigration, you get a visa extension which costs 1900 baht and a multiple reentry permit for 3800 baht.

The multiple re-entry permit is only valid as long as your current visa/extension no longer, it is only used to allow you to come back into Thailand if you leave.

Example your current extension of stay is valid till 19 June 2013, you purchase a Multiple re-entry permit, you can leave Thailand and come back in as many times as you like, but on the 19th June your extension and the multi re-entry permit are no longer valid.

As above, I used the wrong term. I was of course referring to a multi reentry visa. I guess i was mislead a bit on a past post some months back when I didn't use a one time reentry visa and was told it would be valid for one year. I mistakenly figured a 12 month stamp could easily be transferred but realize it's silly to think that would be done for a falang's benefit. I'll know better next time.

If the single entry was issued when you got your extension, it would have been good for a year. You should pay attention, you asked for a re-entry permit, not a visa, you got one. As said, it only keeps your current permission to stay valid when leaving Thailand.

You are correct I should be more careful. My mistake and I feel badly about it.

  13. You got what you asked/paid for. Be it a day or longer the multi re-entry permit is only valid for the current permitted to stay time. You are not talking about a visa but a TM.8 fee. The actual extension of stay for one year is valid for one year but again the cost is the same if for only a week - as the TM.7 charge is 1,900 baht filing fee.

Thanks for the clarification. So if I understand you correctly if I plan to go to a few countries during the last month or so of my retirement visa time frame, and if I pay for a multi "reentry" visa it would not extend past the expiration of my 12 month non- O retirement visa.

    Is that correct?

    i

It is not a visa but a permit

Got it. My apologies for using the wrong term.

Can a Mod kindly change the thread title to correctly say Permit instead of visa? Thanks.

I've gone through and changed visa to now read permit but can't change the title. At least I don't know how to change the title.

  16. I was recently in my local immigration office to take care of several matters one of which was getting a 12 month multi entry visa. I also did my 90 day reporting. All went smoothly and I even offered to give the fellow the remaining ฿200. due me as change from my ฿4000. I could see he was hesitant about giving any change at all and I thought he had a single one hundred note in his hand to give me instead of two. My TGF thought he only was proffering ฿20. She may have been correct what with her eagle eyes compared to my failing sight

Anyway, after all was said and done, I asked the TGF to make sure the stamp would transfer to my new retirement extension which will be due this coming November. The man quickly replied that the 12 month multi entry would only be good until I need to get a new extension. I figure that to be 10 months and not 12. In my book if I buy something it seems I should get the full amount listed on the product I buy.

Has anyone managed to get the 12 month visa to transfer to a new extension or did I just get a bad hand this time around?

And yes it is about the money because i have zero interest in giving the immigration folks involuntarily one baht more than I absolutely have to. ( I realize a degree of "tea" money is required at times.)

And as a side note they grilled the living Sh*t out of me about where I would be going with the multi visa. I told them I didn't know but might be traveling to several places for holiday. I honestly don't know, but I thought the idea of the multi entry visa was to allow unlimited passage across the Thai border without impinging on one's visa status. Am I mistaken about that as i was with the 12 month (transfer) validity of the stamp?

  17. Australian market Pulsars are made in Thailand, but are different spec levels to what sells domestically (and different names too - the TH 4-door is called the Sylphy).

    Major differences are:

Aust models have more safety kit (6 airbags vs 2, plus stability control).

Low and Mid-spec Aust models are available with MT (TH models are all CVT).

Lower model TH versions come with a 1.6L (all Aust models are 1.8L)

Model grades are totally different between the two countries (Aust has ST, ST-L and Ti, Thailand has E and V).

I realize there are different standards met between Australia and LOS but I sure question the differences. Although I've admittedly never been to Australia, I'd bet I'd feel safer on the road driving there than in Thailand.

Is life valued more in Australia or is it that medical care is less expensive in LOS so safety features are considered a luxury item on a Thai car?

6 airbags in Australia and two on the same car in LOS? Airbags work and save lives and prevent more serious injuries. Looks like that takes a backseat to body kits, floor mats, and etc in the Land of Smiles.

Life is one decision after another.

  18. Pull out in front of me and I reckon you will be feeling the brunt of it more than me, in a straight line seat belts and airbags are very effective but when I plow into your passenger door at 100km/h both your seatbelt and airbags will do <deleted> all to protect you, assuming you live I wish you all the best on learning to walk again..... will give you plenty of time to think if playing chicken was the right thing to do.

I reckon you should not be allowed to drive a car.

I reckon people should not be idiots by playing chicken in a game they have no possibility of winning.

  19. If i where you i would take two or three different cards, and a Credit card. I had my card stopped a few years ago because they bank though it had been cloned, although I did tell them about where i would be for a few months. It left me 8000miles from home with no money, I learned after that to take a few cards.

    excellent advice for everyone traveling.

  20. The Wall Street Journal says its computer systems have been infiltrated by Chinese hackers who were trying to monitor the newspaper's coverage of China.

A spokeswoman for Dow Jones & Co., the newspaper's publisher, says the Journal completed a network overhaul to bolster security on Thursday.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that Chinese hackers repeatedly penetrated its computer systems and stole reporters' passwords. The Times said the hackers were hunting for files on an investigation into wealth amassed by the family of a top Chinese leader.

The Journal didn't address how the hacking of its systems occurred, but it said it has faced such threats from China in recent years. It says the hacking was not an attempt to "gain commercial advantage or to misappropriate customer information."

Expert says NY Times hacking by Chinese not isolated

In the case of The Times, security experts hired to investigate and plug the breach found that the attacks used tactics similar to ones used in previous hacking incidents traced to China, according to the paper. It said the hackers routed the attacks through computers at U.S. universities, installed a strain of malicious software, or malware, associated with Chinese hackers and initiated the attacks from Chinese university computers previously used by the Chinese military to attack U.S. military contractors.

The attacks, which began in mid-September, coincided with a Times investigation into how the relatives and family of Premier Wen Jiabao built a fortune worth over $2 billion. The report, which was posted online Oct. 25, embarrassed the Communist Party leadership, coming ahead of a fraught transition to new leaders and exposing deep-seated favoritism at a time when many Chinese are upset about a wealth gap.

Over the months of cyber-incursions, the hackers eventually lifted the computer passwords of all Times employees and used them to get into the personal computers of 53 employees.

The report said none of the Times' customer data was compromised and that information about the investigation into the Wen family remained protected, though it left unclear what data or communications the infiltrators accessed.

"Computer security experts found no evidence that sensitive emails or files from the reporting of our articles about the Wen family were accessed, downloaded or copied," the report quoted executive editor Jill Abramson as saying. A Times spokeswoman declined to comment further.

The Chinese foreign and defense ministries called the Times' allegations baseless, and the Defense Ministry denied any involvement by the military.

"Chinese law forbids hacking and any other actions that damage Internet security," the Defense Ministry said in a statement. "The Chinese military has never supported any hacking activities. Cyber-attacks are characterized by being cross-national and anonymous. To accuse the Chinese military of launching cyber-attacks without firm evidence is not professional and also groundless."

China has been accused by the U.S., other foreign governments and computer security experts of mounting a widespread, aggressive cyber-spying campaign for several years, trying to steal classified information and corporate secrets and to intimidate critics. Foreign reporters and news media, including The Associated Press, have been among the targets of attacks intended to uncover the identities of sources for news stories and to stifle critical reports about the Chinese government.

"Attacks on journalists based in China are increasingly aggressive, disruptive and sophisticated," said Greg Walton, a cyber-security researcher who has tracked Chinese hacking campaigns. China's cyber-spying efforts have excelled in part because of the government's "willingness to ignore international norms relating to civil society and media organizations," he said.

The Times reported that executives became concerned just before the publication of the Wen investigation after learning that Chinese officials had warned of unspecified consequences. Soon after the Oct. 25 publication, AT&T, which monitors the Times' computer networks, notified the company about activity consistent with a hacking attack, the report said.

After months of investigation by the computer security firm Mandiant, experts are still unsure how the hackers initially infiltrated the Times' computer systems, the report said.

  21. Canadian friend of mine flew HongKong - Toronto via Detroit last year. US Customs seized his laptop, held it 6 weeks, then allowed him to liberate it, if her paid US$120 to send to Canada.

Don't take anything that may be construed as copyright violation or porn on your IT-ware. AA

And add trademark as in "copies" to that as well. It could potentially be extremely expensive if caught.

  22. Thanks all,

As I said I happened to see this in a film on youtube and it got me to thinking. It was merely a question and one I know can't be definitely answered for all cases and all conditions.

It just got me concerned to a degree.

I know the cash I'll be giving to a dealer will be good and I hope the same is true about what I buy.

And yes, I have no idea when the film was made. LOL
