1. I have some strict rules about my cards:

ATM - only at a branch, only inside and if possible only local pull. Air Asia via netbook/modem.

    Debit Cards:

Only at AEON ATM machines, local.

Only Internet websites I throughly trust, connection via my netboook/modem. Only after running half dozen av and malware programs. Usually limited to Airline tickets.

    ATM in US:

Maximum pull at local branch. Use cash.

    Travel Outside Thailand DCs:

Airport is first pull, preferably in secure area. Most trusted bank. Outer area, high traffic with inspection. In town, ATM inside bank or at least glassed in. Carry USD as backup. Get money at airport so you can be particular about the next withdrawls.

    Why court disaster?

  2. Your drive may very well be bad. The only thing contrary to this is you state the shop loaded xp, but some remnants of Vita remain.

Reboot the pc with the dvd for xp in

    Run the install

    Delete the partition

    Create a partition/s

    Install

    That is clean.

If you have any more problems, its the drive.

    BTW - get hold of a W7disk!

  3. LH Bank ...

Isn't that one a bit dodgy?
Why dodgy ? Yes, it is one of the new and smaller banks but still gov't. insured. No risk for the first 1 million.

No risk? Surely you jest. Could take years for customers to get the money back. As a farang if for no other reason cannot read or speak Thai, you are at the bottom. Not simply out of Thai preference, but your own ability to stay in thr loop.

Make no mistake, these banks are totally overleveraged with overpriced condos, auto loans and credi catd debt on young consumers. The worst kind of debt next to borrowing to gamble in markets.

The banks extend such dodgy credit because it is impossible for anyone w debt <1m thb to declare bankruptcy. They also garnish wages quickly on loan defaults and harrass debtors.

Huge uneducated public paying monthly payments on debt, no principle. Banks love it and so are happy loaning on virtually anything. It's a kleptocracy!

  4. .

    Interesting comment

Where are you and what happens to these folks a "fine' or IDC or deportation.

Pai and Chiang Mai seem to awash with falangs working in bars cafes in restaurants for which no work permit is possible

Do they all pay off or is there no enforcement

Resorts like Bangkk and from what I read Phuket andPattaya are ful of long term workers are they all paying backhanders?

I left Pattaya more than a few years ago, don't recall a lot of guys working there. Too vulnerable anymore. Phuket in the diving industry yes.

There was a big bust on PP in Feb. I heard some farang on his mobile discussing it, seemed pretty clued in. Said the cops just waited and watched for weeks, then swooped.

What is interesting is that we never get first hand accounts of anyone personally swept up and how they were held to account.

Most of these guys are working because they have no money so fining them is pretty stupid. Gonna be difficult just to get them on a plane they pay for. Then there is court costs and jail time. My hunch is the cops try the scare technique but when money isnt coming, plan b is just to let them go.

Anyone know of any or esp large # of farang languishing in Thai jails over simply working illegally?

    Links please.

  5. OK, I can't stand to leave you happy. :) I hope you realize that using slightly different terminology, Dork and I are doing the same thing.

There is another option. A windows computer can be a router. The trick is that you need two network cards, or Network Interface Cards or NICs.

Ever since at least Windows 98 SE, there has been software in Windows called ICS or Internet Connection Sharing. Here's someone who will back me up on this. W

indows ICS has a limit and I forget what it is. It might be 9 nodes (network devices) that can share.

So, if you wanted to run the windows computer, and put an external USB NIC on it, you could run a cable from that to a switch and then connect all of your devices to the switch. Let's see if you find a cheap USB wired NIC here as an example.

Then you'd need that ethernet switch, so let's see if you can find an example of one here. Remember that one port in the switch is coming in from the source be it a router or a computer or whatever, so you have one less port for your LAN. Some switches call themselves 6 port and clearly have a 7th in, and some call themselves 6 port and one is used for in. Most modern switches can use any port for in, because they auto detect the signal in and automatically adjust for that. Then all other ports can be used going out to your other nodes.

So you have the original NIC receiving the main signal from the hotel or apartment. Then you have ICS providing all of the services of a router through the second NIC. Then you have an ethernet switch which will automatically manage all nodes connected to it.

You set up any of these systems once and then you get it. Reading and doing aren't the same of course, but it's really easy because the intelligence it in the devices. You main jobs are to either log into and change the router from routing to switching (or whatever you want to call it) and then managing what's called the connectivity which is geek for hooking up the wires and other hardware. OR enabling ICS in a computer and connecting everything from there.

Have fun. It works. I'm sitting here using it. Just remember that you can't have two routers on a network and the hotel has one you're using. You must disable that feature in your router or you'll mess up other people too. Your router will see all of the other wireless devices and do its job - try to assign all of them IP addresses, perform NAT etc. and temporarily knock out the system. Read the manual on the router if you get one, and do that first.

With ICS, a USB NIC and a switch, that's not an issue.

Oh jeez, so much went into this, Im feeling guility.

And if I had to crank up my netbook why again would I not just run Connectify?

Thanks bro. Well done. +3 for effort.

  6. Foreigners must bring in monies from abroad to purchase condos and what not.

Can a person working for wages, such as a teacher or small businessman use their salaried or hourly wages to purchase property?

Can all of it come from Thai wages? For instance, purchase of a 2m THB condo. Can a portion be used, a mix or percentage? Thus, working and saving X and supplemented by overseas cash Y.

    Thanks

  7. Could anyone inform me what sort of pay I might expect and the hours (teaching/office).

    BA top US university

Roughly 1+ years experience TEFL 10+ years ago

Does 25k for 20 hours (15 teaching, 5 office) sound about right?

What might I expect in pay the first year?

What sort of opportunities for better pay and jobs exist after the first year?

I presume one is hired and fired at will. Ten month contract, no benefits and I must pay taxes out of pocket.

    Thank you

  8. Dork - you have summed it up perfectly. Was hoping need not invest in pricey Asus equipment (altbough my netbook and tablet are Asus ☺), but fear this is what I do need. You have described the connection perfectly.

Do not want to use windoze based software because that machine isn't on so much anymore. It does work though.

NeverSure and everyone thanks - Ill look for the Asus product when we are back in US or find one here and then ask the shop if they have a cheap alternative.

All sorts of little networks can be seen in the building, they must be doing something similar.

    Thank you all.

  9. Not a subscription, any device can be online using our user/pw. I want to share that to use multiple devices at once. I can do it thru thr pc, but the pc is rarely on.

Appears a bunch of people in our building have their own "hotspots" set up.

Wireless switch or Wireless Access Point?

This will allow itself to be configured to our apt wifi (user/pw)

    Multiple devices can connect

Circumventing the one device at a go issue

    Can I get a cheap.one at Pantip for b500?

Only needs to transmit a few meters

  10. Went to Fortune, had a look. Failed miserably.

I'm searching for a gadget that will allow us to share out multiple devices on our connection which is limited to one.

So, it would somehow establish connection (hardware initially set up with pc?) then allow us to share our phones and tablets...

For apartment wifi, not outside wifi or 3g.

No, I cannot use my rooted phone.

    Thanks.

  11. I'm not sanctimonious. You asked a question, I answered it. I think obsessing over anything is not mentally or physically healthy. I've no axe to grind with a guy that once to pay for a slice of pie every week. I do though reserve the right to think less of a person whose entire life revolves around alcohol and worse...alcohol and prostitutes. You can add smoking tobacco in there as well.

If you leave your home country to live in another nation, hopefully its for more than cheap sex.

Oh, you mention some 19yo tilac MWW? More like some 32yo mommy from Kalasin with stretch marks.

Ah yes, they come for the cute fresh faces in the Internet flash ads - but they stay for the divorced mother of 2.

  12. I found just the opposite. Philippines was full of guys who were all played out. Alcoholic ex servicemen, Crazy/skint Ozzies, Englishmen on the run from Thai cops and debts in Thailand. Assorted creepers. The foreigners that run the clubs will even sell you out to the cops.

Philippines has a few great beaches. Thailand has many. Sorry, you just don't know shit about Thailand or beaches. Does Lonely Planet have a book called Philippines Islands and beaches? No. Despite the nation being a cluster of islands and nothing but beaches.

Many years ago wide eyed me remarked to a couple of Swiss medical doctors what lovely people they were blah blah...they told me to.swing by the hospital after 9pm for a horrorshow. Said they dealt with more trauma re gunshot, knives...then all other patient intakes combined.

The place is run like a penal colony.

Philippines had fewer tourists than Cambodia for many years running - Cambodia! Of the tourists they did have take out the divers and sex tourists, the family reunions snd I bet that number is about ZERO.

You cannot call what Philippino's eat food, it is not fit for humans. Most if not all the meat are discards or offal. The vegetables (which Philippinos hate) are old and soft.

Philippines despite its rain has not been able to grow enough rice to feed itself for years.

A nation, I think even Bangladesh feeds itself.

If it's so great - why are you here?

  13.
You don't need to fly, its costly and doesnt save much time at all. Sometimes crossing a border is a rather tedious banal experience, sometimes is exciting. The trip allows you to see the countryside and the people which is presumably why you are there.

Siem Teap to Bangkok can be fone in a day

Phnom Penh to HCMC can be done in.a day

North Thailand into Lao or to Vientiane can be done in.a day.

Dont bother with Lao if you dont have a few weeks.

If the weather was with you, do this...

Fly into BKK overland to HCMC overland up.to.Hue and Hanoi cross into Lao, shoot down to Thailand. No planes and its all visa on arrival save for maybe Vietnam. You can get that vusa in Phnon Penh.

Its not just the ticket, its the taxi and the usually ripoff price for transport to and from tbe airport.

PS see Myanmar before it cracks wide open.and becomes just another travel experience. Rushed journey there is two weeks.

  14. Best deals seem to me to be on the carriers own websites these days. I like buying direct as any problems I get to deal direct with carrier, no excuses.

You never know who you are desling with on even a large website.

When you get a ticket, call the sirline and ask if the tickets were paid in full and state that the company is not authorized by you request a refund.

Scam agencies often will tell you booked and paid. Send you itinersry confirmed, but they never paid the tickets. You must call. Its a big scam now. Local agents do this more often, but sites as well.
