Because it's not a sign of 'increasing prosperity,' but it is a sign of an economic system fueled by unsustainable debt.

Which means that about 400,000 people in Thailand are now holding more consumer debt than they will be able to pay off in their lifetime.

Car license is 18 years.
That's in the city. In rural area, i.e., most of the country, the minimum age is when the tyke can reach the accelerator, the brake, and the foot pedals. Motorcycle engine size is whatever mummy and daddy are driving which is generally between 110 and 125 cc. Regardless of what is 'legal', that is the reality.

I may actually agree with you on that point if major tech companies, such as Facebook, weren't overt monopolies. Perhaps it's time to break-up monopolies such a Facebook and Twitter. These 'private' companies hold wayyyyy to much sway over the overall social dialogue and commonly accepted narratives.

Imho, that is a predatory lending practice and should not be allowed. All lenders should be on a leash themselves. Loan terms should be for a limited period of time at in interest rate that allows the borrower to service both the loan's interest and it's principle so the borrower has the ability to clear the loan in a reasonable amount of time as opposed to becoming a "Debt Slave" to predatory lending institutions. But it seems that lending institutions actually are looking to make borrowers into life-long debt slaves by saddling individual borrowers with so much debt that it's impossible to pay off during a life-time, and can only be paid off though insurance policies at the time of the borrower's death? That unconscionable!
Yes - the teachers need to repay their loans, but lenders need to be regulated and usurious, predatory lending practices need to end. And this is essentially what the organized teachers are now saying -- restructure the loans so that the principle can be paid off and end predatory lending -- or else we stop repaying the loans. And I agree with them. They have the leverage to reform lending practices. I wish them luck.- 3

Greed is in the drivers seat. "Economic Growth" fueled by debt is an illusion.
So now they roll out academics to justify what will eventually become a 'debt crisis' by stating that all this debt is being spent on things that make corporations profit, therefore it's a 'good thing'. Talk about magical thinking.

What the governments need to do is to create laws to stop banks and other lending institutions from engaging in high-risk, predatory lending practices. Now they lend to people who don't have the ability to repay loans that they are offered by these lenders. Banks and lenders have a fiduciary responsibility NOT to offer loans to those who are over-extended or will be unable to service the debt in the future. This is a problem that greedy lenders created all by themselves, ie, greed trumps risk management. That's a flawed business model. So lenders screw up, over-extend their own balance sheets by issuing high-risk loan, and them demand that the governments become their 'enforcers'. Sound about like mafia tactics.

Vanguard's wire transfer fee is $10, the same for domestic and international, so why do u wire from Vanguard to BKKBUS33 not BKKBTHBK?
I never fill in the information for intermediary bank when I set up or order a transfer with Vanguard and Schwab, let them work it out.
I've attached a screen shot of the "International Bank Information" section of the Swift International Transfer application from my brokerage.
Regarding: a. Corresponding U.S. Bank: (if applicable)
My question is: "Is it applicable" and if so, then is BKKB NY info put in here or not?
I'm going to take the form down to BKKB in CM and simply ask them to show me how to properly fill out the form in order to guarantee a successful International Wire transfer, at least on their end. I'll share that info when I obtain it.

And who becomes the arbitrator to determine the veracity of "false stories and misinformation" in this day and age of weaponized government propaganda? All governments have self-interests that they act upon, so it's pretty much a given that governments will inject propaganda into the social media narrative.
From supporters of Government A:
Government A is good; Government B is bad - therefore Government A should impose limitations on the freedom of speech to protect 'the people' from the evil Government B.
Of course, from supporters of Government B:
Government B is good; Government A is bad - therefore Government B should impose limitations on the freedom of speech to protect 'the people' from the evil Government A.
So what I get from the current poll results is that the majority of responders wish to have their own governments restrict what they are allow to see in social media. That's a statist's dream come true: the citizens call on the their respective governments to censor what the information they can obtain: Fahrenheit 451 for the digital age.
The nanny-state gets to keep the ignorant even more ignorant because it's the "Will of the People." <head-shake>The minority of the poll responders are classical liberals: "We're adults. Give us everything and allow us to determine what is true and what is false." And if 'adults' are worried about what their kids see, then it's the parent's responsibility to limit the content.

Buried in the bill pay section of my US credit union online site is POPmoney. It's free and works well. If not free it's $0.95 for transfer. POPmoney has a webpage you can check if your bank offers the service.
https://secure2.popmoney.com/richux/faces/base/popmoney/prelogin/searchBank.xhtml
My transfers to BKK bank accounts all seem to be fine now for a few years, exchange rate correct and normal charges by BKK bank.
FWIW my daughter in the US just set up a transfer to her mom in Thailand last week and it worked without a problem, same credit union. This was a first time set up and use. There are none of the test deposits POPmoney being a 3rd party handles the transfer. My guess is the service will continue without a hitch after the Apr. 2019 deadline mentioned in this thread."My guess is the service will continue without a hitch after the Apr. 2019 deadline mentioned in this thread."
If you have an account with them you may want to ask their customer service department if those transfers will be affected or not. If they are domestic ACH based transfer (and I'm betting they are), then come Apr 2019 you may be in for an unpleasant surprise. Best to figure that out now than later, then let the rest of us know what you find out. -

Yes, my Bank America account wanted a lot of jumping through hoops to arrange setting up International transfers without appearing in person or having a US cell phone to get PIN numbers. But my broker is far more accommodating. They emailed a form to be filled out and my signature can be guaranteed by a US consular officer.
Fortunately (??) I'll have to go to the embassy for my income affidavit at the end of August so I can get this done too. Two stamps from a consular officer = $100, but hey you have to do what you have to do.
Broker charges $10 for international transfers, so that's not too bad. Far less than my bank would have done.
What brokerage? Also, did your brokerage give you any problems considering that you are sending money from a domestic account in your name to a foreign account that is also in your name? And what are you using for the "Reason for the transfer"?

A post on Facebook on the page of "Ake Srisuwan" claimed that children aged 13 and 14 were responsible but there had been no arrests.
But, but - they're just children. They need some quiet time and a 'time out' and I'm sure they'll promise to never kill again.

Remember those brown paper bags that grocers used to pack your stuff in? I'm sure they still can be made.
Everyone wants to blame the consumers. Try blaming the retailers and the petro-chemical industry that pretty much forced the change to plastic onto consumers and retailers the first place."The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed. And if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new paradigm: the earth plus plastic. " -- George Carlin

It seems that the end of domestic ACH wire transfers though Bangkok Bank NY are going to be a thing of the past in April 2019. That's too bad as they were convenient, simple, and relatively low-cost. So for my fellow Chiang Mai American expats and retirees who have been using this method, how do you plan to get your US funds, such as pensions, transfered over here after ACH becomes a thing of the past.

Wow. I wonder how Grandma Taylor and others family members in North Carolina were able to make it almost to 90 when Cisco is simply a given when making biscuits or frying up chicken. Maybe the molasses and collard greens offset those transfats?
