  3. G'day, I'm an Aussie living in Mukdahan for many years now. I think your idea would suit most Aussies but you don't want to much of the same thing and food could become a problem in some areas. In Mukdahan the Mekong river is at it's widest over it's entire length, similar to Sydney Harbour in width, far more attractive than at N K and you have the bridge across to Laos- Savannakhett also which for Aussies is great as we have the big Savan-Vegas Casino and many great restaurants with the French influence. In Mukdahan there are many good hotels to choose from and good restaurants on the river especially my Mukdahan Manor with The Waterfront Restaurant where Aussies can eat every thing from Meat pies to Lamb Chops. You can check this out on this forum, New Restaurant in Mukdahan for Foreigners, Lots of photo's and the menu. There are tourist attractions like the Shrine of the 7 Martyrs, a huge catholic church built on the rivers edge, a change to looking at Temples. You can cut across from Khon Kaene or Udon to Mukdahan then onto Ubon if you wish and then back towards Bangkok. If this idea helps you and you want more Info or hotel prices Mukdahan and Savannakhett- Laos feel free to contact me. All The Best, Don. Hunter.

  4. <deleted> !!!!!! Giving "US" a bad name because I have 3 days off and I want to travel to Mukdahan? Do you just stay inside your apartment or cave when you have free time? I read its only 1 hour 15 minutes from Sakon by bus. WOW I must be John Wayne Gasey wanting to buy cheap smokes from a market eh? And VIAGRA WOWWWW That makes me a mass murderer?

You people must wake up with nothing to do and read these posts only the parts you WANT to read.

I guess now that I am in Sakon maybe I should just come home from work, stay inside and never open my door, sit on the internet replying to ads on TV and then on my weekends do the same thing?

Anyways for anyone who reads this with a brain in their head I will say again; I am not doing a visa or border run, just have a few days off and want to get out so I thought I would take a bus and check out the Muk Market etc. I was just asking if you can buy cheap smokes on the Thai side like you can when you go into Laos and was also asking if you can buy Kamagra etc. Ok load your guns and put me against the wall.

No the cheap cigs are only in Lao But you can buy Viagra at the Skin Specialists Clinic which is about 300 mtrs North of Muk- Inter Hospital.

  5. In Mukdahan we have Tuk-Tuks running around with advertising for Savan-Vegas Casino which is just over the bridge in Savannakhett. There are also Casino Busses that run from the Mukdahan side of the bridge from a waiting lounge to the Casino and passengers get vouchers etc for use at the Casino, so i presume it is legal here for them to advertise as they have neon signs in a couple of places in town and at the bus station.

  6. He doesn't, but I do...Try 12.5 hours on the VIP bus or about 9 in the truck.

But hey, If I can get HP Sauce for 99 Bt, I'll make the trip. I may have to buy 2 bottles to make it worthwhile.

By the way, it's been about 1.5 years since Georges OP. They finally put all the condiments together on the same aisle & they have added French's Spicy Brown mustard & Kraft RealMayo...but that's about it.

In the case of TOPS, The Manager doesn't order anything, All orders are Computer Generated according to what they have sold he has told me many times when i try to get him to order items from their monthly flyer. I buy a great deal of salad items and some Vegetables that are not available at the markets here along with dairy products like whipping cream etc. We require these items so we can provide the Best Restaurant Food in Mukdahan and i also have at least 2 deliveries per month from my supplier in Pattaya of everything from Meat Pies & Cornish Pasties to Duck & Steaks, Lamb Chops, Salmon plus Australian style Fat Steak house Chips. So if you want a Great Feed come to Mukdahan Manors-Waterfront Restaurant,The only Restaurant in Mukdahan that has the Menu to suit all including great Thai Food. And while your here i tell you how to drive to Pattaya in 7 Hours, if you take 9 or more you must be going via K.K.

    Don,

I'm a believer. this is the guy looking for a contractor in Isaan. Looks like your guy did a great job. When ever I go to Mukdahan I stay at a hotel until I can build my home. I'd love to try your B&B. Do you have an email address to request reservations? I am out of Thailand for now and email is the easy way to contact somoene. I have a feeling you will be very busy.

    Cheers and congrats.

  8. I know exactly what you mean, I have been here for 7 months (Isaan) and I have nick-named our (small) village Baan Nothing or Baan Boring.

Have a very beautiful wife (for 9 years), love her to pieces and although I speak a little Thai/Put Thai she's about the only one I can talk to.

Get a bit bored by talking to our dogs (I do!) because the farmers over here are what they are.. simple farmers and conversation stops after

'pai nai/pai sileu?' and 'kin kauw niauw?'. I do escape to Bangkok from time to time, have a friend over there and we talk & talk and hit the

bars at night. Need to vent my frustration once in a while. After that, I'm ok for a couple of weeks...

I'm near Mukdahan not so far from Sakon Nakhon!

Well if you ever feel like a good feed then you can come to Mukdahan, You can check us out under- New Restaurant in Mukdahan for Foreigners in this forum. There are both pictures and the Menu as well as directions to find us, I hope to meet you, Regards Don. :)

  9. This guy is from Bangkok but does a far better job than any local shop in Mukdahan and is a fair man. His name is Somsak, Tel.0816586726. He doesn't speak English but my Builder Matt is Irish and speaks fluent thai, he put him on my house to do all the Gyprock ceilings and wall plus all the alluminium windows and doors. To check out my house go to New Restaurant in Mukdahan for Foreigners and check out the pictures. First class work. Get your wife to call him.For building kitchen cupboards or bathroom vanities etc call Matt on 0817613376. Dont forget there are about 3 grades of Alluminium frames here, it's worth a little extra to get strong quality. Good Luck, Don Hunter.

  10. I never try and judge others (hard not to do) but the one thing I never understand is why people pay their girlfriend/wife/partner a monthly 'wage'. Surely you are either in it together or not in it at all?

Maybe we're the only Nationality that can keep a woman without paying her a salary to do what should come naturally when you stay together, married or not. hel_l, the first shiela that i live with 45yrs ago bought me a TR4a sports car and we still keep in contact from time to time. I have lived with my lady for 9yrs now and made an honest woman of her 2yrs ago and take very good care of her as she does of me but i have never paid her any salery or bought her 1 speck of gold except for her wedding ring, so they are out there but they don't come from the Bars.

  11. The wife and my two young girls had a fantastic three day stay with Don at his wonderful house.

It had been a very stressful previous few months so the time we spent at Dons place was just what we needed to recharge the batteries. The views along the Mekhong were great, the pool was wonderful and the food was fantastic!

Don is a great man to chat with and he and his wife and two wonderful staff made you feel like part of the family.

If you are local in the area it is the sort of place that you could go for lunch and end up having a swim and staying for dinner! Highly recommended and we will be back.

I have just moved to Mukdahan and heard of Don's place and found it to be a delightful place. The Food is excellent and the Don and Daeng are great company. They have also made my transition to Moving to Mukdahan easy. So for good company, food and just relaxation this is the place to go. Oh by the way they also have free internet. Tom

  12. Traffic is quieter in Ubon then Amnat? That's a new one on me!

Your right there Memock, maybe he should look at Mukdahan, there are 2 very good Foreign built houses here for sale at the moment and you have the benifit of the easy trip over the bridge to Lao to get the things that you pay through the neck for in Thailand like wine etc.

Any idea of what sort of houses and price range? Thanks for the replies so far everyone

    Dan

If you look at this site, houses for sale in Mukdahan you will find 2 listed, 1 on the river built by a Yank and 1 in Pompat village close to the city plus there are a number of new estates around Muk with good quality homes being built starting at around 2 million baht. You need to come and look for yourself, If you do and i can be of assistance please feel free to contact me at my B&B/ Restaurant on the Mekong river, for directions look at New Restaurant in Mukdahan for foreigners on this forum.

  13. The place is just off highway 212-on the left-hand side around 1km before you reach Mukdahan and the main traffic lights.

And your quite right the food-especially the fish is very good.

The Restaurant is caller NARIN, Formally NARIN Fishing park. The Owner, Narin by name, built his new TRADITIONAL THAI House next to the old Fishing Park Restaurant and incorporated the new Restaurant under the house and out onto the courtyard and incorporates a Stage with Entertainment. Both Narin and his wife are Excellent Hosts although they don't speak any English and have had this restaurant for more than 10 years. AS the Proprietor of the BEST WESTERN food restaurant in MUKDAHAN, THE WATERFRONT or SONG FUNG KHONG in Thai, Situated on the Bank of the River at the Southern End of Mukdahan City I Highly Endorse NARIN as the BEST THAI Mekong River - Seafood Restaurant here and it is very competitevly priced. So if you Visit Mukdahan You now have the 2 best places to DINE. To see more on THE WATERFFONT RESTAURANT look on this Forum at NEW Restaurant in Mukdahan for Foreigners, OK.

  17. I've visited this restaurant a few times now and i'd strongly recommend it.

I asked Don the proprietor to provide me with a copy of the menu, which i've attached for the benefit of any potential customers.

    MENU UPDATE: Blackboard Specials

[1] Thick Juicy Aussie Lamb Cutlets- Crumbed or Char Grilled served with Creamy mashed potatoes and Veg. [2] Pork Fillet Medallions wrapped in bacon, as tender as butter. [3] Herb Marinated Rabbit, sauteed in olive oil and slowly cooked in the old fashioned way.

  18. A Canadian Tourist who was arrested for selling drawings for 20 bht. in black & white or 40 bht. in colour at Mukdahan's Indo-China Market area 20 days ago has finally been released from jail last night after finally appearing in court yesterday. He apparently was fined 3000 bht. for the offence, which i think was No Work Permit, but the fine was dropped due to the fact that he had spent 19 days in Mukdahan jail & apparently this is cut out at 200 bht per day. I believe he was escorted by Police on this morning's bus to Bangkok where he will be in the Custody of the Canadian Embassy until they can get him on a flight home. This poor guy didn't know he was doing anything wrong by selling drawings of people who actually asked for them and local police had admired his work i'm told but apparently the Immigration officers were not impressed. Once the Arrest was made the process had to take it's course and with very little openings in the court schedule as very little takes place until after the 15th of January he was stuck until a court time was available. Some Holiday hey. How is it that we read of Assult charges in Phuket being dealt with in 48 hrs. a more serious crime in my mind, and a thing like this can keep a man in jail for 19 days even though various people tried to help there was nothing that could be done. The new head of Mukdahan Immigration who has been there for about 9 months now has done a number of things to Improve the office and service to Foreigners and is totally approachable to assist Foreigner if he possibly can and i personally think that this guy may have spent even longer in jail if somebody had not pushed for a court date, maybe it was him, if so good on you.

  19. Yes there are car parks on the entrance to the bridge but there are no boats up or down the river only long tail fishing boats that may take you for a sight seeing trip, i'm not sure. The river is low now so it probably is not so dangerous, never do this when the river is high as the river is very turbulent here and many just dissappear. Good luck.

  20. There is a great misconception about Thai French Beef. They have been around doing this for 36 years therefore the name is remembered. I have been to the slaughter facility at Sakorn Nakorn. Further, I have sold Thai French beef for many years. A few years ago they got into big financial trouble ere basically out of business. It is reported that a major supermarket supplier of many imported food items bought into the company and insisted that prices be raised to almost that of imported Australian beef. Rest assured that there is nothing special about this product as compared to 2 other beef suppliers in Thailand. When you are using a straight Brahaman beef cow it is always going to be tough. Those that cross breed result in a better product. The seeman for cross breeding is expensive as it has to be imported. The Kasetsart University at Nakorn Pathom has been trying to develop a special Thai beef cow for years but have not been successful. One of my major suppliers kills his beef cattle earlier with less weight and they are more tender. The supply of quality Thai beef is so short that you can not depond on wholesale from one supplier. I see little hope for the Thai beef cattle industry as they continue to have to fight the black market animals from surrounding countries. Pen feeding is also expensive. To most Thais beef is beef and they are not willing to pay the price for quality.

I started a Beef-Ox farm 9 years ago in Mukdahan to supply the Thai-French meat company with my Italian partner who oversees the business. We keep around 100 animals all Pen Fed and your right it is expensive and this naturally is passed on to the consumer, hence the price of the Steak. By Thai standards this is still a good business with good returns. Like anywhere in the world you can sometimes purchase a tough piece of beef no matter what the cut, but in general the quality is very good.

I also recently opened an up market Restaurant in Mukdahan, the first and only one of its type as we provide a Big variety of Steaks, All sizes, From various suppliers, Aussie or NZ Lamb,Seafood etc. The surprising thing is that the Thai's are more than happy to pay the price for good quality Beef and we sell almost as much Lamb, which most people say they don't eat but once they try it they love it. Of course i'm talking about the well off not the average person. So there is a Market there once they know it is available and it comprises 90% of our clientel and they all return again & again. They like the Prestigeous atmosphere that also relates to their position in society and it gives them somewhere to take their visiting business associates or government officials to entertain them and they never question the Bill. But if anybody reading this is interested in the Cattle business I am willing to sell my 80% share in this well established & profitable Farm for 5 million Baht. DJH77. :)

  22. I was there a couple of days ago, had a great lunch with my wife and friends. We had steaks which were cooked perfectly, accompanied with vegetables (inc sprouts) and a nice pepper sauce. The two wives had Tom Yum and Beef in Oyster Sauce, both expressed their enjoyment. Good value for money in a very nice setting.

I took some pictures and have permission from the owner (great host) to post them.
