One of plus points of living in Thailand (or similar) as opposed to UK is there is no local tax here (that applies to me anyway) .. back home its based on the property you live in ( not own ).

In the UK I would be paying the equivalent of 13,500 baht a month just in "council tax".  So Im that amount up monthly. My tenent has to pay it not me. £336.09 a month in pounds.

I know there is "free" health care etc etc. I had just not thought of that plus point till today when I researched the tax sum now for a new tenent.

Gave me a warm glow .. mmmm how many "free" beers does that money give me.????????????

Maths not my strong point but 13,500 divided by 0.90 baht is only 15000 beers a month.

Jeez. Gonna have to try and make do I suppose. Or find cheaper beer.

You must be living in utopia if you can get beer for 90 satang

  2. These are long stories but I will give shortened versions.

My manager was transferred from Malaysia and he imported his Jaguar MK 2 3.8 liter 1965 in need of total restoration. His bill from customs was 1,000,000 baht.

A good friend of my wife is a customs officer at Laem Chabang. He drives a 4.3 HSE Range Rover vogue with the UK plates still attached under the Thai plates.

  3. Please note the following is between 10 and 20 year old info.

I used yeepoon turf as described. If the ground is well prepared a good lawn is possible. It takes a LOT of water to maintain. I had an automatic sprinkler system and deep well. Seed is very difficult to obtain. Chatachack weekend market has a seller of bermuda seed 100 grams for 400 baht. There is a Bangkok supplier but they deal in golf course grass so not interested in small amounts. The thai agriculture department has a turf research division. Maybe they can supply seed.

  4. If you decide to go with a proper tool do not use the type above as they work by screwing in to the stub and expanding the stub making it even tighter. OK on thick wall but no good on thin wall. Buy a 4 sided taper extractor. I have removed a broken stub with a flat piece of steel with a slight taper ground on and lightly hammered in then turned

Just down the road from me (Hua Hin), there's a small, cheap-as-chips body shop. Tucked away, outside, in the corner, he has a British racing green Jaguar XJ6 convertible. No idea whose car it is and it's been there for a year now. It was open to the elements but it's now covered in blue tarpaulin (I guess to keep the rain out in the rainy season, as the top is down on the car). Breaks my heart that every day it's just sitting there deteriorating, because, after all, it is a J-a-a-g! One day, when I win the Lotto........

Àny chance of a picture? Please.

I have an XJS convertible back in the UK. I also spoke with somebody to do with a Thailand Jaguar club. He said, as far as he knew there were no convertibles in Thailand. Jaguar did not make a softop XJ6.

I was curious to find out if this was really a Jaguar and really a convertible. When the rumour came that Thailand was to ban import of used cars my then neighbour imported three transporters of classic cars. Thats another story. One of the cars was a xjs drophead BRG with tan roof. It was a 3.4 litre. If it had been the 5.3 i might of been interested.

Are you sure it is an XJ6 as Jaguar never made a XJ convertible. Only the XJS had a convertible model. A few of the 2 door XJ coupes were converted to soft top by a private company. Lynx I think. So if it is one of those it is very rare.

Thai TV featured the Thai classic car club once. The president has a 1957 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing imported by his father from new. When asked what the biggest problems in the club were he replied. It is nearly impossible for the members to import a car. You have to search the country to find an already imported car. Most of the members cars were what I would call modern day classics.

I have fond memories of my exploits while drinking Mekong. Was sad when it was no longer available. Sangsom it is.

From the back recess of the memory. In 2000 all Thai spirits were distilled by a goverment monopoly with mollasses. To improve quality, business was to be sold to the free market. Of course this being Thailand one bidder got the lot. The Thai goverment went to court as they said they owned the trade marked names. For sure there was a big case involving the name Mekong as it was exported. Perhaps that was why Sang Thip disappeared
