  1. The Nine Bistro (Phone: 0998086719) (6.998335, 100.476178)
On Sripoovanart Road, north side, just past the Kasikorn Bank opposite the Winstone Hotel, a shophouse unit hidden behind potted plants and hanging baskets. Inside is a small double height restaurant, wooden panelled and hung with pictures and portraits of the Late King, along with with bric-a-brac and curios from old Thailand. The food is authentic southern Thai cuisine, with many old fashioned dishes that reminded my wife of her grandmother's cooking. The food was excellent, portions aren't huge portions, so we sampled a good selection of dishes. The restaurant was busy, so service was leisurely which gave time to enjoy the succession of dishes, and the pleasant atmosphere of the little restaurant. We all enjoyed the food and the restaurant, so will certainly be back. Food for four adults and two children with drinks including alcohol came to Bht2000.

More and better development needs to take place in Hat Yai.

What did you have in mind?

The problem is your Malaysian and Singaporeans friends are fickle. All it takes is another bomb attack in Hat Yai and they stop coming for six months to a year; that's what has happened after every bombing. So if you've made a significant investment, and are reliant on tourists to make your money, you're in trouble.

Hat Yai is primarily a center for commerce. It has no great history, its only really as old as the railway line, it isn't particularly attractive, just a functional hub for trade. Tourism is a handy additional source of income for the city, but it will never be the main driver, particularly whilst the issue of autonomy for the Pattani States remains unaddressed.

Cracked it!    It's bloody Kaspersky anti-virus.  I paused that and the download figure goes off the scale.  Thanks for everybody's help.  Now to find an anti-virus that doesn't half-cripple my downloads.

I use Kaspersky and have no issues with Internet connections. I don't however use Kaspersky Secure Connect - which comes with the Kaspersky paid version; if I need a VPN I use the one I already pay for. Just make sure Secure Connect is disabled.

  4. Hot - daytime temperature 33°C night time 26°C

    Humid - about 80% humidity

Rain showers - about 10 rainy days per month that time of year with about 100mm rainfall in the month

Best time of year is February - March : driest and coolest

Worst time is October to December : wettest - main monsoon

    June July is OK

yes where you live, but in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and here in Hua Hin things are booming. And all down the coast to PKK and beyond.

Hat Yai is certainly booming. Several of my wife's extended family have moved down here since we opted to live in Hat Yai. We've put them up for a week or so, but in no time they've found work and a place to rent. There's that much work that some have had two or three jobs in a couple of weeks before they've settled on something they're happy with. In Hat Yai much of it is retail, but there's plenty of construction and factory work too.

I would say there are just way too many retail shops and bars/restaurants/coffee-shops

Yes, there's a high churn rate on the bars and restaurants in Hat Yai. I'd guess the failure rate within the first six months to a year is greater than 50:50. Whilst there are many well established bars and restaurants, but there's a huge number that seem to change name and owner every month or so.

there is another place south of KT called Marang which also has a jetty

Yeah, my bad. Merang is about 25km north of KT airport, and Marang is 20km south. I've spent time in Kuala Terengganu, was there March last year on business, it's a pleasant enough part of the world. But I've not visited the islands. It's a short flight from KL and I've flown up variously with AirAsia, Firefly and Malaysia Airways all have regular flights.

    Stibnite seems the closest call.

Stibnite has a specific gravity of around 4.6g/cm3, whilst tektite, which is largely silica, has an SG of about 2.6 - if you're saying they have a similar density then it's clearly not stibnite.

Have worked out the hardness? Does it leave a streak, if so what colour? Is it magnetic?

  8. ????

No, thankfully I don't own a car here, what's the point!  I just use local transport including a handful of local cab & tuk-tuk drivers I can call - parking is then their problem not mine. Wife has a scooter so no issues there.

Yes, it's generally chaos, double parking is common, especially on the wide roads like Sam Sip Met, and no they don't seem to care.

As for traffic cops, we see them at rush hour manning the major junctions with a whistle, but beyond that they've obviously got revenue streams enough. The amount of riders with no helmets zooming around, often under the very noses of traffic cops, is indications enough of a well fed constabulary.
