  1. Got chatting to a couple of guys from the U.K, last night, to find it was their first time to Thailand asking them if they we're here for the girls or the temples, or both, got a reply that shocked me, they tell me their here not for the girls one said, "i wouldnt dream of going with a hooker" or for the sights, but their here to buy and smoke ganja, plus look for this "yaba" drug they heard about on T.V, obviously i tried to warn them of the dangers and penalties of being caught with either drug, and just got laughed off as they wouldnt beleive it was a big deal, i soon left them to their fate, this is by far the worst reason i have heard for coming to Thailand, and to any one reading this who is planing to come here, Dont get involved with dope, it is a big deal this is not europe

I read a book a few years back, " The Damage Done" written by a young Auzzie(forgot his name) that did some high flying for several years with the drug dealing/smuggling and finally got busted here in the LOS, his mate who was arrested and incarcerated in the Bangkok Hilton with him finally wound up committing suicide after they were released and went back downunder. A good read. Recommended

Send these guys to the library.

  2. A skidboot is what is put on the front legs(down at the hoof) of horses for calf roping, barrel racing to prevent the animal damaging their legs during sliding, many use these Skidboots for hunting dogs as well. When I was growing up they were all made from leather but these days many are made from Kevlar. Now you know as much as I.

You ask me what time it is and I told you how to make a watch.

  3. I will embrace the wise words of Prime Minister Tony Blair who told the Labor Party conference, "They(the muslims) have no moral inhibition on the slaughter of the innocent. If they could have murdered not 7,000 but 70,000, does anyone doubt they would have done so and rejoiced in it?

You have that VERY VERY wrong, the 'they' Tony Blair was referring to was Al Qaeda and NOT Muslims as a whole. The Labour party has gone to great lengths to avoid stereotyping and with the help of the Muslim Council of Great Britain keep peoples focus on the Islamic extremists who are the perpetrators of these atrocities and away from witch hunting.

If you boil all the fat off of what Tony Blair said the word Muslim will appear....

This thread was originally posted as a plea for Muslims or the like to step forward and intellengently explain their reasons for slaughtering innocent people but it seems it has gotten out of hand a bit but you have to admit the responses are interesting, I am also a litle surprised we have non-Muslims(I assume)at Thai visa that would actually prefer to go live with the Muslims and defend their slaughter of the innocent, but it seems we have several, I have no problem with that, I'll even help them pack.

  4. I have been traveling to SEA and India as well as China and Japan for over thirty years. Everywhere I have traveled the muslims were always creating some problem.

I don't have time to expose erudite discourses on muslim terroist issues.

What I will say is this In Thailand my wife from Bangkok has always said that the people in the south are no good.

I say what do you mean. She says they are muslims, they will kill you and no one will ever find you.

From the mouths of babes, huh.

    Tell me this.

How does killing Bhuddist monks and teachers in the south have anything to do with western impirialism or christian issues?

No offense i say if you sympatize at all with them go and live with them :o

  5. Well BC,

I am on duty today! :D

And quite a few days after,...

Hate is nice, keep you "balanced".

But, but, there is quite a lot of reasons to hate people and religion is sure not the "best" one,... :o

Well said Bluecat, You all hang on and maybe someone will open up a discussion about the Kiwis. :D

  6. Hold on now, everybody slow down some, this was not meant to start internal squabbles/fights or whatever you want to name them. If friends can't disagree(we are friends in here are we not?) then something is bad wrong. I am glad we don't all have the same opinions and ideas.

  7. Hi everybody

Does anybody know where I can find out how many expats are living in Thailand (ideally by nationality)? I couldn't even find some official figures, let alone guesstimates how many expats are really living in Thailand.

    Thanks for you help

    Uncounted Quasi-Resident

I'm one but why do you want to know?

  8. BTW, Goat Roper, on Quidnovi quoting your are reffering to, he is just saying the following:

Thank you Bluecat, thank you for the translation that I far better understand than the one I submitted.

    :o

On the son part, he can't do that anymore since his son's name has been changed from his' to her's. So I'm not sure he would be able to leave the country.

Anyway, as much as I symphatize with him, I think the communication in the couple was quite a problem, not to mention the communication with the police,...

10-4 Bluecat, I do understand but I also understand that as an alien in this country we find ourselves in he is an un-person(as most aliens here are) and I think as far as the courts are concerned he has already lost the battle before it even begins. My intention was not to be flipant of other folks problems but there is a basic issue here that I don't think can be settled in any amiable way and certainly not through the Thai legal system. The 1.7MB mentioned is not a huge price to pay if this is what is necessary to get ones children back but I am sure this "woman" is holding a gun to his head(figurtively) and will bleed him until their is nothing left and he still won't have his son back.

I sure don't have any answer for him, wish I did.

  9. Merci Chat bleu, merci beaucoup pour la traduction que je comprend beaucoup mieux que celle que j'ai faite sur internet.

    Merci

You son was kidnapped eh, respond in kind and the both of you get out of the country immediately!!! Or, you could always go to Petchburi and find yourself and enforcer for a ###### of a lot less than 1.7MB, I know this is ugly talk but I am just trying to find a way to sympathize with you.

  10. i wish i can buy a set of Snap-On tool, can't seem to find any, any of you guy seen any in bangkok.

labor is cheap in thailand so most people bring in their car for services, but the problem about mechanics in thailand is that they don't seem to put thing back the way they took it out, certain tool are meant to work with certain part but they use any kind of crap tool they see, a missing wire mean that you did something wrong, for them is if it work who care about the rest of the part. I usually work on my own car, even changing my own oil

There was a Snap-on authorized dealer in Jawaraj (China town Bangkok) a few years back (~6), I was in his shop once, didn't stock much but had BIG catalogs. Maybe check Snapon's URL.

  11. Any suggestions where a good shop is in Bangkok to do business with and what wheel maker is among the best and maybe give me an idea of costs, I realize costs will much depend on the particular style and manufacturer of wheels but just grab a decent number in the middle somewhere. Thanks

  12. Hi....I have lived in Thailand for nearly 4 years now and i am ashamed of the fact that my thai consists of taxi thai and bar thai. All my thai friends speak english and of course so do all my farang friends. However the time has come to rectify this probelm and so to that end i am looking for a good place to learn thai. I live near the silom area so anywhere round there would be good, although anywhere on the skytrain route would suffice......oh and i am looking for something that will not cost me an arm and a leg.

So any suggestions, experiences, prices would be appreciated.

AUA is affordable and not too far from Silom if you can meet the class schedules.

  13. personally i like the mitsibushi strada, the new engine though 2800 turbo intercooler,

i like the tigers but i feel like i'm to close to the windscreen, (i'm 6ft2")

i've looked at all of them and i prefer the mitsibushi, (lovely interior)

i have to say though the isuzu looks really nice with some nice wheels etc

Toyota is coming out with new models I think in August this year, maybe can save a few bucks by taking some leftover old stock.

  15. Thanks again all, I will do the same and put it all under my wife's name as a returning Thai . ( she is in the states with me now ) Your right Dutch, some items do have personal value, other things like my sony 53" tv and computer im hoping

will be cheaper to ship than to buy new..again.

Will that 53" Sony TV set work here in the LOS?

  16. Great story  :o

But an urban myth. Someone else posted a variation of the same tale on Thaivisa recently.

Urban Myth or not, I wish someone would create a nice story like this that would put me in a as good of light as it seems to do British Airways; Works for me.

  17. Anyone give me ballpark figures on construction costs including materials for building a house in Chaiyaphum. Low and High per sq metre.

Got quotes in Hua Hin early last year to build a 100 square meter bungalo, not fancy but western style, price with some fixtures and electric all pulled in- Baht 5500/sq. meter, my plans. I could have chiseled the guy and got a cheaper price but I say pay cheap-get cheap; Bangkok vacinity you can start by doubling that at least. This is of course construction costs only, land not included.

  18. We are coming back in june and I am bringing a mate with us, he is from the back blocks of Tea Tree Gully, is semi-trained human, should be interesting to see the reaction by the villiagers when they see him.

My wifes niece is also planning to return to Oz with us for 3 months, again that should be interesting.

I just hope it doesnt all turn to shit and come back on me.

You won't be able to get your mate out of the LOS so secretely prepare him before you leave :o home.

  19. Thanks for your suggestions.

I would like to ask for a final vote for either Bangkok Bank or Siam Commerical, based on:

    1. customer service / farrang attitude

    2. service fees (esp. international transfers/bank drafts)

    3. internet banking

    4. ATM access / fees

    5.  debit card payment

Perhaps we can compile a document which contains opinons/experiences or a 'ranking guide' for Banks for future assistance to others?

    S.

The problem is different people have widely differing experiences from bank to bank and branch to branch. I use Siam Commercial Head Office and find that as modern as a tomorrow, and a very helpful staff too. It suits me there. I wish a one size fits all posting could be made, but it is a bit too hard for now. Good luck.

Been using both Bangkok Bank and Siam Commercial Bank for two decades now for international and local dealings, both are friendly and effecient, Siam Commercial is a tad more forgiving than is Bangkok Bank.
