  1. Saw a pile up at the airport. People stopped at the end of the moving walkway and dawdled around while the people behind crashed into them toppling over their luggage cart, then tripping over the cart and started rolling around on the end of the walkway on their backs.

Security sprinted over to hit the emergency stop.

    Amazing to watch

(Notice how I didn't point the finger at any particular nationality)

  2. I think, it's something to do with interpersonal spacing. If you are from a Northern or Western European, or North American “Anglo-Saxon” context, you may feel the space when passing a random person in a public place in Thailand can be too low for comfort. I think it's a cross-cultural difference in honouring interpersonal space. It may feel even more intensified if one has previously resided in less urban settings.

Tend to agree with you. I've noticed with some middle eastern work mates they tend to walk too close along side me when we're walking n talking.

Another kazakstani workmate commented on how us Australians gave way to others when walking or driving.

Bangkok is very multi cultural and I too have observed the previous posters comments on the difference in asian / western comfort zones when in close proximity to others.

To my observations there not nearly close to the Russians and their 'me me me' mentality.

  3. The new network they are talking about is TrueMove-H, which is basically the same company. They are requiring everyone to switch to the new network so that customers can benefit from their HSPA 3G+ and so that they can shut down TrueMove (license is expiring).

I've been with Truemove-H for over a year and have yet to find a place that does not have 3G coverage.

    Good luck,

    GJ

I think true move H is the inclusion of Hutch which they took over a couple of months ago.

3G Is pretty good throughout bkk.

  4. Man using 2 benches for workout.. 1 one bench for workout.. 2nd bench with 2 inches of paperwork from uni which he would get stuck into between sets.

All free weight benches assembled into a table for snacking on food between sets.

If I was training there I would just ask the guy to move his papers (or lunch) so I can use the bench. No big deal really. I sometimes have to ask people to remove their baggage from benches down in Pattaya.

What's wrong with a guy eating an apple while on a treadmill. You've got hands free and it's mighty boring. Apples are pretty good low-sugar carb sources. The coffee is a really good idea for cardio. I always have mine at home before I go gym, but I can understand someone in a hurry finishing off their coffee while they warm up.

Like it or not a gym needs members and they don't always behave in the way us "old-schoolers" do.

Why do I defend this people? I have respect for any person who gets off his butt to do some exercise, no matter how inefficient his training might seem to the casual observer.

Your spot on with your respect and I find myself turning my negative thoughts into a positive just like yourself.

  5. Anyone that's at the fitness firsts and true fitness around the sukhumvit area have probably already seem a huge influx of ex-cali wow members joining up. Hopefully the price difference will keep the majority at bay. Cali WoW was bad but in my opinion the demographic they marketed towards was part of their demise as well. Ive never seen 100% working equipment be just torn to pieces in my life as I saw at both cali 23 and Ekamai.

How about the dumbells all miss matched on the racks... or even spread out in the room.

Seen some amazing things at these clubs..

highlights: man eating apple wile using crosstrainer.

Man using 2 benches for workout.. 1 one bench for workout.. 2nd bench with 2 inches of paperwork from uni which he would get stuck into between sets.

All free weight benches assembled into a table for snacking on food between sets.

Not to mention.. starbucks on the treadmill. Coke to quench thirst on treadmill.

I phone usage through the roof!

  6. I always wondered where the dairy farms were. Was trying to picture where there were rolling green pastures.

I watched a thai doco on a buffalo dairy where they made cheese, yoghurt etc.

Funny bit was when the worker was asked if she tried it she turned her nose up and proclaimed no way.

Can't remember where it was. Very dry area. Workers very north eastern.

  7. Careful with the lactasoys and most soy milks here, they taste like they have a lot of sugar added. Not having a box infront of me now I'm only going from memory, but I wouldn't be surprised if is sugar content is equal to soft drink.

  8. A Service hand is a third party contractor who provides a specific service during the construction of an oil well. Eg wireline (perforating, logging), cementing (cementing the casing). mud engineer ( drilling mud specialists)They are an outside company contracted in by the oil company.

Roughneck (floorman), Roustabout, Assistant driller (AD), Driller, Toolpusher are all core crew and work directly for the drilling contractor. They own the drilling platform (modu) mobile offshore drilling unit. They drill the hole.

The oil company like woodside or shell co ordinate all these services together to drill and complete a well.

Oil and gas is a pretty diverse industry. I'm only speaking from the drilling side.

Have a look at the websites for the big third party contractors. Schlumberger, Halliburton, Weatherford, Baker Hughes.

They have good information on there about oil field terminology etc.

If you get a start with any of these companies ( an easier task than getting a job as a roustie). The pay sucks at the start. But they will train you if your willing with all kinds of courses both locally and internationally. Think of it as an apprenticeship sort of.

In my opinion a brilliant start for a 19 yr old if you like technical stuff but still don't mind getting dirty.

  9. Qld coal seam gas is going off right now. Seek.com.au regularly has trainee positions for service hands. Pay is shit at the start. But its a good way to start. Mighr require a truck license to get a look in. But at least you'd be usefull.

Read up on the processes involved with drilling a well and the associated companies involved. Such as Mud dr. Wireline. Cementer. Mwd..etc etc..

Hell of a lot more interesting than chasing a hook around the decks or pulling slips

  10. such a bummer that these gyms have to close, Initially I hated them cause they were just posey gyms and not much serious training going on.

but ill eat my words, Ekkamai was a 10 min walk from my condo. So handy!

I dont care so much about loosing my membership but care more about having to join another gym further away..

    Sorry , Rant over

  11. Had hernia op at Bangkok hospital, key hole surgery with mesh implant. Cost about 140k. 2 nights in hospital. 3 scars about 5mm long, cant hardly see it. As far as durability, I lift weights 4 times a week and work on the drill floor of an oil rig.. No probs.

Totally happy with the job. Aussie doc was astounded at the quality when shown

  12. I saw AU$1 under the seat of the airport transit bus. I believe my excitement was greater than usual (after participating in this thread) and seized the opportunity to pocket approximately 31 Baht equivalent.

Pity it wasn't even enough for a bottle of water.

I plan on saving it and convert it to baht at the end of the month when I finish work.

    Oh the spoils!
