  1. snicker bars are cheaper here and thats one of the reasons im here 20 baht for a big bar.WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?

I hear you... i go to oz for work sometimes pay nearly $10 for a medium snickers and a 600ml coke. thats 300 baht!

or hows about AU$4.75 for a 1.5 liter bottle of water (150 Baht) cant believe it.. its just water in a bottle.. more expensive than <deleted> petrol

  2. I've read that companies like Haliburton and Esso and PTT and Chevron all have office there.

They also have offices in Bangkok.

They have offices in Bangkok. They have depots in Songkla.

Not sure about that. I've seen lots of offices in Singha Nakhorn. Many top companies are there: Haliburton; Chevron; etc. Many execs stay at the Had Kiaw Resort Hotel in Singa Nakhorn; and many execs work there full-time too.

I spoke to a Thai guy there. He told me about the three main jobs available:

    1. rig cleaner

    2. roustabout (the guy who takes equipment to the people who need it)

    3. roughneck (the guys who joins the pipes)

The Thai guy said he got paid 30,000 Baht per month, and that after a few years that could go up to 100,000 Baht per month. He worked 4 weeks on followed by 4 weeks off.

Thai only jobs, no way will an expat get a look it.

Junior rig crew positions are filled locally and usually change nationality depending on where the drilling location is. Thai, Filipino, Indian, etc.

  3. One baht? Serious question? I think not!

You are aware of who's head is on the 1 baht coin right? And you are saying you would leave it on the ground? Your actions would offend I think every Thai person in this country, and depending on your intentions, may in fact be illegal.

I heard a story (dont know about the truth in it) about a foreign golfer playing against some thai ppl here in Thailand. There was a lost bet of 1000 baht and the foreigner in a fit of rage crumpled up the note and kicked it along the ground to the thai players.. the story continued on telling about police involvement, persons head on the note...etc etc...

but then ive seen the odd thai in 7/11 drop some one baht coins and walk off without picking them up.

  4. All I know is I put my coins in a little tin every week it is empty every week and the wife's mentally challenged nephew plays a lot of games at a arcade, Sure saves me a lot of work and makes me feel good to see the kid enjoy himself,

Thats a brilliant idea.. im going with my 20kg of coins and im going to master the mechanical claw soft toy machine!

my new found hobby.. you heard it here first!

  5. A comment on "the working conditions, food and safety culture" offshore Thailand versus offshore Australia. Aussie Government regulations and Union rules makes any compromise on these items non-negotiable whereas one would (and frequently does) put up with a lot more sh!t here because it is Thailand after all.

Wasnt the PTTEP rig which caught fire a few years ago working under Aussie goverment/union rules, and this was being run from the Aussie Divsion of PTTEP out of Perth ?

Having worked many years in the Gulf of Thailand can't say I have had to put up with any more shit than I have anywhere else I have worked over the years and in some respects its better than some Western countries I have worked in.

Yes, the West Atlas...or the 'West Ashtray' as it was called in the office after that event. We lost gear in that fireball.

cant believe that the outcome of that event was that if the opertator can pay for damages / spill cleanup, then they can drill in australian waters.

big news in Australia.. but not in Thailand

  6. Im on the hunt for some good quality bar stools for my apartment in Bangkok. Im looking for one with an adjustable cyclinder and better quality than the vinyl covered models ive seen at SB and Index.

Anyone know where else to look? Went to CDC last weekend and didnt find much.

  7. Siam Paragon in BKK has original leatherman, Swiss army knife and all the other big name knives, Mens level, sporting section out the back.

Little bit pricey, but a pretty good selection.

Next to the knives is a good store called TANK. Great selection of Cree LED torches and other survival gear, think theres another branch at Central World as well.

  8. Better working conditions, food and safety culture to be had back home

You base this statement on what ?

In the gulf of Thailand, the working conditions, food and safety culture are the same as, if not better, than some of the "western" locations I have worked in before

Based on personal experience working in the industry im saying i prefer to work on drilling rigs in Australia, sure its not the ultimate adventure some want, but i save that for my time off.

So you have worked drilling rigs in the Gulf of Thailand then ?

    yes

but thats not the original point of my post,

Initially i wanted to work in Thailand so I could live here. Later on I decided that I would work elsewhere which I found more enjoyable and commute here to thailand for my time off.

  10. I have the same problem, Just moved house and had to transport about 20kgs of 1-5 baht coins (10baht coins handy for the washing machine at the old apartment)

I told the misses that we should donate it to charity and her reply was that we have to count it, they only accept notes.. which kind of defeats the purpose.

Id love to drop it at the feet of a beggar, maybe the sukhumvit worm guy, but aparently their all gang controlled,.

  11. Trouble with these 5 ltr boxes is that one can lose track of how much you are drinking. However, on the plus side - when the bag is empty it can be removed and inflated by blowing in the nozzle then used as a nice pillow to sleep of the affects :)

Im pretty sure the "Cask" is an Australian invention and refered to by many budget minded university students as the "Space Bag"

One drinking game we used to play was to tie the bag up on the clothes line (hills hoist) poke a hole in it and drink it like that. Often some one would spin the clothes line and you'd be chasing the spinning bag around the back yard.

Imagine the looks you would get attempting that in Thailand!
