  1. Try the nachos at the Mexican restaurant in Soi Convent. I guess they must be doing something right because they did a big 'do' for the Mexican Ambassador last year.

    It's called Coyote on Convent.

and this raises the question: do they have nachos in Mexico? I think not...they are an 'across the border' gringo invention concocted by off duty bar staff, blond guys named Greg and Steve in California in the bar kitchen while drinking shots of cheap tequila chased by boddles of Corona beer...

but, no matter...it's whatever floats yer boat...to His Excellency the mexican ambassador: 'and how are the nachos, senor?' and then he sez diplomatically: 'excellent...I must try these at home...'...

Well I used to eat Nachos in Puerta Vallarta many many years ago......maybe they were exported from America. I did read somewhere that they were invented in America though....

  2. Finally the Blether understands and respects us real Thaivisa posters. Because we live here we have a higher status as people on holidays. We need to be treated with respect, our opinion should be the only one to matter. Based on how long we have been here the more valid our opinion is

We are the master race on Thaivisa, i am happy you finally acknowledge this fact. Maybe once you can join this brotherhood of men and woman. We are so much above you and others that we get dizzy looking down on you guys.

    Bow before us... respect us.

I am on my knees as we speak!

  3. Define 'Thai resident'?

The thread is aimed at a substantial contingent of members who continually complain about we non residents commenting on TV. So let's say they live full time in Thailand.

Good on them, however that is not the criteria for being a TV member. There are plenty of members such as ourselves that have Thai partners, have experience of Thailand, are in contact with Thailand every day, and spend every spare minute in Thailand.

I've even seen an attack this week against a member who lived in Thailand for years, has a Thai wife, and is now bringing up his Thai kids in the UK. Some people seem to think he has no right to comment on Thai issues now.

I think that is a ridiculous concept. So let's give these malcontents a thread of their own to play with.

Personally, I think unless you have PR, a Thai passport or work permit for Thailand ie legal status in Thailand, you dont have the right to comment on Thai issues either....so this would exclude all the OAP's who live in Thailand, chase women (well hobble after women at least), pay no taxes in the country

Oh.... so being married to and living with a Thai spouse in Thailand is not a 'legal status' in Thailand?

If that's the case, after we come back from Japan, I am getting a divorce only so I can maintain my TV 'legal status'.

On the topic of sorting the wheat from the chaff, maybe there could be a colour coding of a posters info on the left where a post originating from a non- Thai IP address could be in a different colour, or maybe their avatar isn't displayed? Anyway, something suitably discriminatory and stigmatizing that would fit well with the perception of the foreigner in Thailand concept.

Agreed, and black people can have their own special (non-discriminatory) colour .....like.......erm....black?

So paying VAT doesn't count? And doesn't having a non-immigrant 'O' visa give 'legal' status in LOS? Just a thought.

  5. "BTW: the safety rating on the Fortuner is the same as the Hillux, not very good. "

The Hilux is the same wheel base and running gear, the fortuner just has a full size passenger body.

I've never had a diesel, but I take the point with regard to torque. I guess the diesel will also have a better resale value because it's a longer lasting, more robust engine.....just wonder if it vibrates and trundles along like most noisy diesels?

  6. It really doesn't make a difference where this attack happened, I don't really understand what that has to do with getting a decent health insurance policy.

Even if the school concerned provided a policy of sorts, it's still up to the individual to make sure that adequate cover is in place.

Regardless of where you happen to be in the World. Thailand is not the nanny state that UK has become.

  7. It would appear yet another case of a foreigner in Thailand with no health insurance. Makes my blood boil, and this guy is a teacher? Should know better.

I hope he has generous friends, and wealthy parents. All completely avoidable with a decent policy.

And yet again another clear demonstration to those clowns who say they can just get on a plane if they get sick. Can't get on a plane if you are in ICU in a coma.

That said, I hope he recovers for the sake of his family as much as himself.

  8. Don't you just love it when vested interest parties try to talk the market up, not dismiliar to that group that's waiting for 70 baht to the Pound again.

I don't have a vested interest anymore, I just keep myself up to date. But I've blundered, and didn't consider the rule about arguing with certain types - and I've been beaten by their experience!

Mrs Mills, I came to Thailand for the weather! clap2.gif

  9. "Anyone who thinks the property market in the SE UK is being energised currently should stop reading the Daily Mail as their sole source of input to their economic opinion forming and decision making."

I couldn't agree more. My sources are highly placed business people, respected financial institutions and relatives in the property industry. I don't read the Daily Mail either. Of course, living in Chiang Mai, gives you a unique insight, with relevant direct connections to London and South East England professionals. Good post!

  10. whistling.gif Enjoy it while you can.

My personal opinion only....but the people in the U.K. who somehow believe that the Euro collapse ....(inevitable now that Greece will default and now Spainish banks are showing problems)..... and that Eurozone and Euro collapse will not affect the GBP are deluding themselves.

All the European economies are like a house of cards....Greece, Spain next, then Italy....and all the rest of the cards will be falling sooner or later.

Yes, the Pound will be insulated somewhat....but the Eurozone turmoil will cause problems for the pound also.

As for the Euro...it's basically toliet paper now.

In fact the whole world economy will shake. It's all smoke-and-mirrors anyhow....based on an illusion....and backed by nothing but hot air and illusionary paper profits.

The Euro first, then the Pound and the U.S. dollar will come under pressure. Exactly how hurt they will be it's anyone's guess.

The days of "western" economic dominence are going fast if not gone already.....and it's never coming back.

The old Europe is on it's last legs, and Asia (especially China) will take it's place.

And the last time I looked at a map London was closer to Brussels than to Beijing.

    whistling.gif

I do love the ramblings of a bar stool economist!

The London and South East England property markets are currently being energised by a huge influx of Greek and Spanish money.

So evidently the wealthier Europeans disagree that the £ is not a good bet. Essentially what people are looking for is a stable currency, backed by a sound fiscal government - and the only Countries that have that are NOT in the Euro.

  11. I don't mean this sarcastically, but a genuine curiosity... who buys travel insurance, and why? I've been to 30+ countries and to my knowledge never needed insurance of any type, nor did I ever regret not having it. Whatever it's for, would it not simply be better putting a few bucks in your rainy-day account, let it grow with each trip, and just pocket the thousands of dollars you saved when you are 65 as Git says, and no longer eligible for insurance?

People like you always annoy me. Haven't you read some of the begging posts here of idiots who have no insurance who have an accident that isn't their fault, and have HUGE hospital bills that they can't pay?

The general statement I get is; 'well I can get on a plane and fly back to UK where healthcare is free'.

Except that if you've been hit by a car/bike/tuk-tuk and you're in a coma in the ICU for 2 weeks, getting on a plane might present some problems. And the costs very quickly mount up. When the hat gets passed around, I always get my health insurance card out and say - I paid, why didn't he?

  12. As long as "tea money" and an utterly superficial approach are at play, Thailand will experience a dearth of quality of education. Throwing money at the situation will improve nothing. Equality in this country is a joke. There is a firmly entrenched class system that wraps its tendrils around every stretch of the long-term Thai experience.

The daughter of my wife just entered the mattayom 1 class in a school out in the deepest isaan, the school has about 1500 students and 80 teachers, about 250 new matayom class 1 students. at the parents information they were talking about discipline and about physical punishment (yes, really, they distributed a form where the parents had to say yes or no to allow the teachers to hit for punishment). that is a typical teacher quality problem they need to hit if they are not able to cope otherwise, never learnt how to (i used to be a teacher and know what i am talking about)

now our daughter reports that in her class are 45 students and some have no desks and must sit on the floor. the school has not enough teachers and not enough rooms and the stupid populist governement is spending millions for useless tablets... a real pitty and it happens on the back of the future generation. i think that situation is symptomatic for governement schools out in the poor red shirts country side, which again shows the low interest of many people for a better education out here. the interest stops because of the costs. to enter matayaom 1 school we had to pay about 6000BHT for uniforms, shoes, and and and ...here i am estimating the avaerage income at about 4000 BHT (cash is scarce here) a month...what happens if they have more childern????....they do no go to school anymore!!!! very simple is it???

If you care so much for your daughters education, send her to a better school!

  13. Really don't understand your thread. If your gay, your gay. Do what you want with others of your same gay thingy, end of story. ;)

    Same 'gay thingy' hehehehe

As a gay man, the only thing I do which could be viewed as 'alternative', is visit gay bars. I see an increase in straight females to these bars, I suppose because they want intelligent conversation, good music and friendly guys who certainly don't view them as sexual objects.

Other than that, what is the point of this thread? jap.gif
