  1. I don't mean this sarcastically, but a genuine curiosity... who buys travel insurance, and why? I've been to 30+ countries and to my knowledge never needed insurance of any type, nor did I ever regret not having it. Whatever it's for, would it not simply be better putting a few bucks in your rainy-day account, let it grow with each trip, and just pocket the thousands of dollars you saved when you are 65 as Git says, and no longer eligible for insurance?

People like you always annoy me. Haven't you read some of the begging posts here of idiots who have no insurance who have an accident that isn't their fault, and have HUGE hospital bills that they can't pay?

The general statement I get is; 'well I can get on a plane and fly back to UK where healthcare is free'.

Except that if you've been hit by a car/bike/tuk-tuk and you're in a coma in the ICU for 2 weeks, getting on a plane might present some problems. And the costs very quickly mount up. When the hat gets passed around, I always get my health insurance card out and say - I paid, why didn't he?

  2. As long as "tea money" and an utterly superficial approach are at play, Thailand will experience a dearth of quality of education. Throwing money at the situation will improve nothing. Equality in this country is a joke. There is a firmly entrenched class system that wraps its tendrils around every stretch of the long-term Thai experience.

The daughter of my wife just entered the mattayom 1 class in a school out in the deepest isaan, the school has about 1500 students and 80 teachers, about 250 new matayom class 1 students. at the parents information they were talking about discipline and about physical punishment (yes, really, they distributed a form where the parents had to say yes or no to allow the teachers to hit for punishment). that is a typical teacher quality problem they need to hit if they are not able to cope otherwise, never learnt how to (i used to be a teacher and know what i am talking about)

now our daughter reports that in her class are 45 students and some have no desks and must sit on the floor. the school has not enough teachers and not enough rooms and the stupid populist governement is spending millions for useless tablets... a real pitty and it happens on the back of the future generation. i think that situation is symptomatic for governement schools out in the poor red shirts country side, which again shows the low interest of many people for a better education out here. the interest stops because of the costs. to enter matayaom 1 school we had to pay about 6000BHT for uniforms, shoes, and and and ...here i am estimating the avaerage income at about 4000 BHT (cash is scarce here) a month...what happens if they have more childern????....they do no go to school anymore!!!! very simple is it???

If you care so much for your daughters education, send her to a better school!

  3. Really don't understand your thread. If your gay, your gay. Do what you want with others of your same gay thingy, end of story. ;)

    Same 'gay thingy' hehehehe

As a gay man, the only thing I do which could be viewed as 'alternative', is visit gay bars. I see an increase in straight females to these bars, I suppose because they want intelligent conversation, good music and friendly guys who certainly don't view them as sexual objects.

Other than that, what is the point of this thread? jap.gif

  4. I am always amused by posters that can't, somehow, use spell-check.

Somebody mentioned to me recently that if you want to make a small fortune in business in Thailand - start with a big one! whistling.gif

I've been here for many years, but next year I am going to give the Philippines a go. I'm sure that the 'negatives' will be there also, but hey-ho, it's still better than living in UK.

  5. Hmm.

If I'd known about this when I flew out of LHR last year I might have been less concerned with the jar of Marmite that the b*stards stole from me and more concerned about the receipt-less 5000EUR I had in my pocket!

Argh!! They confiscated your marmite? Now that really is a story. I go back to UK every year to get a new 'O' Visa, and bring back 2 large jars of marmite, and 2 large jars of colmans.

Oh, and to stick with the subject, at least 10k in £50 notes to get the best exchange rate from the gold shop in Soi Thaniya. Best exchange rate I've located so far. whistling.gif

  6. In my view, if you can't afford health insurance, you shouldn't consider living here, if you are from UK. There are many types of illness or accident damage that could result in extensive treatment, and you may not be able to travel (back to UK for the free healthcare).

And being so irresponsible as to smugly report that a saving has been made by not having insurance is frankly ridiculous. Citing open heart surgery as potentially being the most expensive treatment is laughable. You could be very badly damaged being hit by a car/bus/tuk-tuk/motorbike or even being badly beaten during a robbery. If you are unable to travel to UK for treatment, and you run out of money, who do you think is going to help you.

Can't afford insurance? You can't afford to live in Thailand. unsure.gif

  7. As has already been alluded to with the mention of Steven D. Levitt. The answer lies in chapter 4 of "Freakonomics"

Essentially, due to legal abortion, women have the kids they want/can afford/don't resent, and are generally more settled and ready to be better parents.

It's more complex than just that of course, but try the book, I think there is a huge amount of good sense in it (unlike some other places I read opinions). whistling.gif

  8. Well, I looked in my extensive health insurance policy (not Boopa btw) and I can find no exclusions referring to bars.

I say again, another sad story of yet another traveller with no travel insurance. annoyed.gif

And you can call me cynical if you like, just don't pass the hat around me, I have no time or money for irresponsible people.

  9. A farang taking legal action against a Thai national - and you expect justice? laugh.gif

the Thai courts are actually quite impartial, I dont know of anyone who has had a vaild case who has been screwed over, and i know of a number of Foreigners who have initiated proceedings and won.in the civil and family court arenas.

If that is indeed the case, then I apologise. I have been here for more than 7 years, and I know many friends who have businesses here who happen to be foreigners. I am yet to hear, first hand, of a foreigner winning a case in court against a Thai national. I heard, first hand, of many occasions when the Courts have found against what I consider to be 'natural' justice.

I am not a 'bar stool gossip'. I have progressed and won many cases in the UK, acting for myself at every level, from County Court, through to appeal courts and even, in one case, the Royal Courts of Justice. All my cases were civil.

  10. Not sure if I smell an organised scam here, but last week I was stopped by a young farang girl (21-25), on Suriwong Road. She wanted to know where the tourist police are, complaining that she'd had her bag stolen.

There is a tourist police office at the end of Pat Pong 2, which I pointed out to her. She asked me for 500 baht so she could get a taxi to her hotel. I declined.

I then watched her walk past the tourist police office, and brazenly approach another man.

  11. It doesn't matter what the figures are, it's blatantly unfair that a tax payer who has made the required contributions to this 'Ponzi' scheme should be penalised in any way, Regardless of what Country they choose to live in.

The fact that this is enshrined in law is a bloody good reason in itself to sign the petition, because it is unfair.

And no, I am not yet on a pension, despite retiring 11 years ago. laugh.gif After 7 years here, I am moving my base to the Philippines, purely coincidentally.

  12. Sex tourists bring nothing, I say again, nothing to this beautiful Country. annoyed.gif

Well, erm, except for employment, and money, and help for the folks upcountry and.........

Anyway it's disgusting and should be made illegal. I shall order it banned hence forth. biggrin.gif

  13. Unusual choice, widely considered the worst of the suv bunch.Did you not look at the Pajero Sport? they can be found in stock in BKK. Good luck with your new truck rolleyes.gif

Why is it the worst of the SUV "bunch"? Because of it`s design?

    I love the design...

It's a huge vehicle. You certainly ain't about to save the planet! whistling.gif
