  1. I am always amused by posters that can't, somehow, use spell-check.

Somebody mentioned to me recently that if you want to make a small fortune in business in Thailand - start with a big one! whistling.gif

I've been here for many years, but next year I am going to give the Philippines a go. I'm sure that the 'negatives' will be there also, but hey-ho, it's still better than living in UK.

  2. Hmm.

If I'd known about this when I flew out of LHR last year I might have been less concerned with the jar of Marmite that the b*stards stole from me and more concerned about the receipt-less 5000EUR I had in my pocket!

Argh!! They confiscated your marmite? Now that really is a story. I go back to UK every year to get a new 'O' Visa, and bring back 2 large jars of marmite, and 2 large jars of colmans.

Oh, and to stick with the subject, at least 10k in £50 notes to get the best exchange rate from the gold shop in Soi Thaniya. Best exchange rate I've located so far. whistling.gif

  3. In my view, if you can't afford health insurance, you shouldn't consider living here, if you are from UK. There are many types of illness or accident damage that could result in extensive treatment, and you may not be able to travel (back to UK for the free healthcare).

And being so irresponsible as to smugly report that a saving has been made by not having insurance is frankly ridiculous. Citing open heart surgery as potentially being the most expensive treatment is laughable. You could be very badly damaged being hit by a car/bus/tuk-tuk/motorbike or even being badly beaten during a robbery. If you are unable to travel to UK for treatment, and you run out of money, who do you think is going to help you.

Can't afford insurance? You can't afford to live in Thailand. unsure.gif

  4. As has already been alluded to with the mention of Steven D. Levitt. The answer lies in chapter 4 of "Freakonomics"

Essentially, due to legal abortion, women have the kids they want/can afford/don't resent, and are generally more settled and ready to be better parents.

It's more complex than just that of course, but try the book, I think there is a huge amount of good sense in it (unlike some other places I read opinions). whistling.gif

  5. Well, I looked in my extensive health insurance policy (not Boopa btw) and I can find no exclusions referring to bars.

I say again, another sad story of yet another traveller with no travel insurance. annoyed.gif

And you can call me cynical if you like, just don't pass the hat around me, I have no time or money for irresponsible people.

  6. A farang taking legal action against a Thai national - and you expect justice? laugh.gif

the Thai courts are actually quite impartial, I dont know of anyone who has had a vaild case who has been screwed over, and i know of a number of Foreigners who have initiated proceedings and won.in the civil and family court arenas.

If that is indeed the case, then I apologise. I have been here for more than 7 years, and I know many friends who have businesses here who happen to be foreigners. I am yet to hear, first hand, of a foreigner winning a case in court against a Thai national. I heard, first hand, of many occasions when the Courts have found against what I consider to be 'natural' justice.

I am not a 'bar stool gossip'. I have progressed and won many cases in the UK, acting for myself at every level, from County Court, through to appeal courts and even, in one case, the Royal Courts of Justice. All my cases were civil.

  7. Not sure if I smell an organised scam here, but last week I was stopped by a young farang girl (21-25), on Suriwong Road. She wanted to know where the tourist police are, complaining that she'd had her bag stolen.

There is a tourist police office at the end of Pat Pong 2, which I pointed out to her. She asked me for 500 baht so she could get a taxi to her hotel. I declined.

I then watched her walk past the tourist police office, and brazenly approach another man.

  8. It doesn't matter what the figures are, it's blatantly unfair that a tax payer who has made the required contributions to this 'Ponzi' scheme should be penalised in any way, Regardless of what Country they choose to live in.

The fact that this is enshrined in law is a bloody good reason in itself to sign the petition, because it is unfair.

And no, I am not yet on a pension, despite retiring 11 years ago. laugh.gif After 7 years here, I am moving my base to the Philippines, purely coincidentally.

  9. Sex tourists bring nothing, I say again, nothing to this beautiful Country. annoyed.gif

Well, erm, except for employment, and money, and help for the folks upcountry and.........

Anyway it's disgusting and should be made illegal. I shall order it banned hence forth. biggrin.gif

  10. Unusual choice, widely considered the worst of the suv bunch.Did you not look at the Pajero Sport? they can be found in stock in BKK. Good luck with your new truck rolleyes.gif

Why is it the worst of the SUV "bunch"? Because of it`s design?

    I love the design...

It's a huge vehicle. You certainly ain't about to save the planet! whistling.gif

  11. The ones I hate are the parents who park their unruly children in economy and then head off to their nice quiet seats in business class whilst we have to cope with the bickering mayhem of their unsupervised progeny.

Or the times I've wound up in the middle row stuck between two hugely overweight people who then overhang their seats and crush me between them, making it impossible to get my table down to eat or drink.

!00% agree, which is why I fly Biz Class. whistling.gif

  12. You failed to identify your router (Make, Model)

But with many routers you could use your browser to access the IP address for the router and do a restart to accomplish the same thing.

You might be able to re-boot the router remotely, but if you switch it off, you will be unable to communicate with it to turn it back on again remotely!

  13. I just bought a 50 inch Panasonic plasma 3D in London.

I was told by the salesman that the 2 best makers are Panasonic and Samsung.

A friend bought a Lada not so long ago and the salesman told him that Lada is one of the best cars on the market.

The OP wanted an independent view, I gave an expert's opinion from a retailer that deals in pretty much all the TV manufacturers.

He didn't ask about the opinion of a Lada dealership salesperson.
