  1. This is Thailand ,everything's for sale

Not sure if you can still do it but all the driving schools in Phuket used to have B5,000, copy of passport and some photos , come back tommorrow and pick up your license. Dont have to set foot in a DLT.

Why would you pay 5000 baht for something that costs 100 baht?

  2. why do drivers licenses expire at all? i did my german moped / car / truck licence in the '70s and this license is still valid today.

having to renew licenses without associated skill assessments are nothing but a money grap.

australia does the same thing, every 5 years i get slugged A$150+ to have my photo put on a new piece of plastic.

Do you have a Thai license and have you already renewed it?

When you go back after it expires, before you get the new one, you have to do the eye tests and reflex tests again.

They should also do this in Europe, too many old people on the road there who can't see #### anymore.

  3. Everyday I and my neighbors have to put up with one idiot who has an illegal exhaust and so some reason feels it necessary to sit on his bike and rev rev the engine. He and others like him should be removed from the road. Selfish little bastard.

Have you called the police to come and test him? I would have thought that would be your first course of action. You sound like the guy who would to that.

What is it with you? Your wife doesn't allow you to have a bike so you can't play with the boys?

I have more respect for the people around me than to constantly annoy them with selfish loud noises. And yes if he does not soon change his ways police will be called. It has been done before and the police have been most cooperative and helpful in making selfish loud noise makers quiet.

What makes you think that he is in the right to make noise and I should have no recourse to quieten him down. I have no wife anymore so that comment of yours is totally irrelevant.

What happened? She left you for a guy with a loud exhaust? biggrin.png

  5. 1.You can get a 2 year temporary drivers license on a tourist visa but not a 5 year licence with a letter of residence from immigration, as I found out last week.

This makes total sense, tourists normally don't hang around for 5 years.

But they might be coming once a year to Thailand, so why have them reapply every two years? There's no adventage, just creates more work.

Seems to me they half-way understood that, hence the increase to two years.

Then you can just use an international drivers license.

  7. Paddock is OK for helmets. Easy as well, next to Huai Kwang MRT.

If you can get to Ladprao/Kaset Nawamin area there is Honda BigWing, Dainese (plus 2 other bike shops next door), Panda Rider, Dr. Bike, U Turn etc.

This is great! Will check them out today. If I tell the taxi to just go to Honda big wing, would I be able to walk to the other shops, or should I have the taxi on standby?

    Good luck with that biggrin.png

  8. Oh, sorry never knew that. No offense meant, thought it was some Bangkok sign.

Good question, but its very difficult to answer, but ill try my best of my ability.

First things first, you need to understand that all police officer have their own agenda, in the eyes of the law, nothing is specific, but laws that are specific just dont work and makes no sense.

Laws states that you cannot change or modify your vehicle in any way shape or form. this law apply to all vehicle that is register, and if a vehicle is not its considered illegal and can be confiscated,

but here's the argument, your registered vehicle only states the color, the engine type, the CC, inline 4 or 2 or 1, model or series.

so with that being said, you can technically modify anything that i didn't mention above. but here's where things get confusing.

Police officer always use this LAW to fine you, but mainly exhaust or hidden license plate.

normally under all circumstances, your after market mirrors, tires, back seat cover, frame slider, fender eliminator, bars any kind of modification done to your bike can be held as infractions under this law, but you dont and that where the irony of the matter is.

so it all comes down to the police officer, to let you pass or to fine you.

Rule of thumbs. If a police officer stops you and is issuing you a ticket, if you dont want your bike impounded, take the ticket and pay the fee, but if you do then by all means argue with them.

Hope this clears up some confusion.

    Thanks for that !

What does the blue sign say in your photo...it is just out of focus... " Welcome to Tea Money Shake-down " ???

DELETED, it says "Welcome to Yala". Apparently you have no clue what goes on down south to have checkpoints like these. The last thing these guys are interested in is collecting tea money.

Didn't think you did, since your original post started with being stopped for not wearing a helmet, says it all.

  10. My wife just called up the transport folks and this was the info she got:

"If 3 years plus you have to pay "Pasi Ra ngub" 572 THB and return the plate number and also paid those 3 years that you missed

Next step is register again with new plate 315 B"

Edit - that was info she got from a Thai forum, not the official transport department.

I have a bike for which the tax hasn't been paid in 18 years now.

Went to the DLT, couldn't do anything for me, even tried offering them some money, nothing worked.

  11. 1. Go for the older riders - they have managed to survive this long, so either have good defensive riding skills or a particularly effective talisman.

That doesn't really work because they work with a rotation, you have to take the one whose turn it is, so if you get a young guy you can just sit around and wait for other customers to turn up and then jump up when it is the old guy's turn.

  12. Maybe one reason was that I always drove wearing full gear, respected the driving rules, and never went out after 10pm. I think most of the check points usually set up after the heat of day is gone (6pm onward). It is so hot in day time that no policeman is willing to stand in midst of smoke and heat and check why your license plate is missing. It might be a different story in the evening or at night.

Not where I live, almost daily checkpoints from noon to 4:30 PM.

I know it is very safe to ride around here after 5 PM smile.png

  13. First Class insurance comes with many things which I consider mandatory. Agent appears at accident site, sorts out details, takes statements, liason with police. Bail Bond. And on all my bikes - large and small - First class covers aprox 80% of replacement value, even the accessories added to the bike. Just show them the bike, with a list of what you added and the prices, they take a few pics - done. Drive with minimum insurance - no matter how safe you are as a driver - how do you control the actions of the other drivers ? Answer - you have no control. So have an accident, and not First Class coverage, be ready to pay. And pay. And pay. No Brainer in my Opinion.

This is very useful when you are still at the site of the accident.

By the time the insurance guy came to my last accident, I was already on a hospital bed, so half of the damaged items where not noted, including my helmet.

Went to the insurance office when I came out of the hospital and couldn't add these things, should have been done at the place of the accident.

  14. The cost of tax and basic gov. insurance on a bike up to 125cc is about 420 baht. However, if it has not been taxed for a while then you have to pay the back duty owed as well. Also if not taxed for more than 3 years (afaik) then you lose the plate and registration of the bike and have to start again.

Umm, if its a case of a mere 420 Baht then I suggest you sort it eh lol.

It is 5 years and nothing like start again, your green book and plate become invalid.

It means you actually forfait the bike.

  15. i went to honda big wing in Hua Hin with a friend who wanted to trade in a cbr 300 on a new 500 model.

they simply were not interested in a trade in.

he showed them cash and was willing to deal on the spot but they simply would not trade in his bike.

his 300 is in good condition with low mileage and we were both simply flabbergasted by their attitude.

needless to say they lost a sale.

    rob

That is because Big Wing doesn't deal with 300 cc bikes. Try trading in a Yamaha Fino at Yamaha Riders Club, will be the same story.
