  1. I would chracterize my wife and myself as real gourmets who have eaten everything from self-caught rat on a stick up to the highest Michelin decorated restaurants in France and Spain etc. But it is never too late to get our palates educated further - so - where do I get this Old Speckled Hen ? Then I know how a real British ale should taste. After all I am only German and know little about beer (sorry - ale, real British ale to be precise).
  2. How could I be so wrong or have at least a so different taste than the majority ? I mean, I had the Watneys BEFORE I went to Amsterdam ????. This makes me even more eager to try it again if I would see it but they do not have it in Central where they really display a large selection of different brands.
  3. That's impressive. I think that in many countries there are dialects that are so different from each other that people cannot understand each other. I noticed that once when I met a taxi driver just in front of the exit of one of Londons airports. Did not understand a thing. In Germany Plattdeutsch is so different from High German that it must be considered a different language. Incomprehensible for the rest. In Switzerland you have regional varieties of Swiss German (apart from the 4 offical languages spoken). But isn't it that Latin belongs to only one of the language families in Europe (where Italian, French belong to) whereas the rest is different (like English, German). But I am no linguist. Just interested in languages and their differences across the globe and how different their concepts are and how different their writing.
  4. It matters a lot. If you do not recognize that you might now want to contemplate about mishaps that happended to you in the past. When I go out I sometimes wear indeed at least a 2 piece suit. Depends where I go. And Gin and Tonic is the favourite of one of the former world champions in cocktail mixing, Peter Roth, which I happen to know personally. Lets forget about the pinky - does not fit into the picture.
  5. Interesting. I did like it. A good example how tastes may differ even if your taste is against the majority. But maybe you like Som Tam Isaan Style. And maybe it depends on the circumstances as well where a "rats push" as you put it so eloquently might be refreshing when ice cold... To be precise it is not Pattaya but Sattahip, but my wife and me are in the city nearly every day - thats where we shop.
  6. That's easy: Because I never saw it again and I have been to quite a number of different countries in this world. And when I was in England or the Channel Islands where it might have been available I had to work and could not make a tour through the pubs. Or do you know a place where in Pattaya I may taste it again ? I think it was draught beer, not in a bottle. Had it in a pub somewhere in Belgium while I was on my way to the Netherlands by car.
  7. You mean to say Watneys Red Barrel no good ? I had Watneys Red Barrel only ONCE in my life - and this was approx. 45 years ago in Belgium I believe. It has left such an impression of being a tasty beer on me that I still remember this event even today !
  8. You obviously did not come close to a real German Pils yet. You should (in Germany, where they celebrate the filling of the glass slowly in batches to produce the right amount and consistency of the foam - which takes time). Pils in a bottle just poured is by far not the same thing, so forget this comparison.
  9. That explains a lot. The only game I know even less of the rules is cricket of which I do not even have the faintest idea. As far as baseball is concerned my knowledge ends with what is shown in the Charlie Brown comics although I have watched games on Japanese TV. But seems to be popular in the US.
  10. Maybe I am misinformed, but the decent way to drink a Guiness is warm to my knowledge. Not that I would ever drink that.
  11. The current population of the US is about 350 Mio people. What is a complete mystery to me is why one single intelligent compassionate strong ingenious leader to be the president cannot be found. I guess there must be at least hundreds that are well qualified and never get the chance because they are not part of the system that allows election. Or they are maybe too clever to be interested in the job.
  12. Something is wrong and you can look wherever you want: Climate, decline of values, wars - even real nuclear threats, Chinese threats upcoming in addition, Dictatorships increasing, pandemics (and might be increasing) .... I am thinking hard if this is a too pessimistic view and I might ignore what has happened in the past, but somehow I have a gut feeling that this is not true. We seem indeed to slide more and more towards an (even more) dark age.
  13. I wonder if there is actually a law restricting the interest one can take for a loan (as it is in other countries) - regardless of enforcement. Enforcement may be up to the borrower (However who is stupid enough to make a loan under these conditions ?)
  14. To call the former "Farang Pub" now "ASEAN NOW Community Pub" is indeed a very good idea. Easy to see why. Congratulations !
  15. Try Weihenstephaner Vitus (available in Central Pattaya Festival). Not as dark as Guiness, but multiple times more tasty. Same price range as the Guiness. Has a high alcohol content of more than 7 %. However it should be drunk cold ????
  16. You can make up any correlation you like on various items if you have enough imagination:
  17. For sure there is an impact of this democratic process. Or not ?
  18. Some are "grilled" (badly), questioned, accused, considered, put down, censored and and and ...... What would you guess the impact of all that would be ?
  19. Did you read the small print ? It says charter rate plus expenses. 750 Grand per week would have been a bargain (or is it ?) - but who knows how much the expenses would be. Gasoline, Crew, Food, Drink, any special extras ...... Better to free the guy from his worries - confiscate - chop chop
  20. Thank you ! Good instructions. Unfortunately you cannot download all without registering. Nothing is free nowadays - and if you have to pay with your private data. Which I wont.
  21. Funny, just today I had a look at the delivery that came in yesterday and I thought exactly the same. They manage to give you 6 copies of the same DIN A4 sheet (one as tax invoice, one as copy of tax invoice, one as delivery confirmation etc. etc.) with a delivery.
  22. Back to the good old times of instant coffee with optional milk powder then. Invokes memories. At least THIS will wake you up in the morning. Vietnam is indeed famous for its coffee and coffee shops. Actually the guy who introduced one of the biggest coffee chains in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam is a friend of mine. So I could have first hand expertise of the best coffee machines and coffee if I wanted to. But I stick to Nespresso - although expensive, the standard capsule is 22 Baht while the Blue Mountain was 65 Baht (reserved for special occasions, I am not Elon Musk, either)
  23. Thank you. Yes, Nespresso is expensive but convenient and they have a really large selection. Unfortunately not always what you need regardless of varieties. Happend with Twinings as well (they dumped the "Prince of Wales Tea" variety - in my opinion the best they ever had and it happened with Lotus', they dropped their phantastic Tesco Lotus Original tea). Since I drink only one cup of coffee for breakfast (maybe two) 2'200.- THB last for me for about 2-3 months. One thing I have to say: Nespresso is lightening fast with their delivery - I have my new capsules in Pattaya in 2 days and ordering is easy, too. They have a good website contrary to many Thai sites I have seen. Your GF must be a genius, you need to fill up the exact amount and how she exchanges the alufoil is a mystery to me. The machine punches holes into the foil and not only the amount of coffee but the correct pressure are vital for a good coffee.
  24. Lacessit brought the term up. For me it means practical intelligence rather than intellectual reasoning and thinking. In English you have as well the term "shrewdness". I do not know if this catches the deeper meaning of street smart. Example: You may be a good business man but maybe you have no idea nor the capability to understand quantum mechanics.
