  1. May I join that request ? I used to be a member of the organization "Exit" in Switzerland but now no more.
  2. It was published some months ago. I do not recall the exact numbers but I remember it to be in the millions (bike and car). When my wife made her license at the driving school we were accompanied by a neighbor who was driving since decades without license and decided "it would be unhastily time to make a license".
  3. Quite an impressive list of exotica you list. All I know from this list is Bacon and Steak and I have heard the name "Haggis". But as far as I remember not because of the excellent taste (However, I certainly did not try it).
  4. How nice would it be if they were to implement this in Thailand. None of our credit cards (Thai wife and myself) uses two factor authentication. When I asked I was told "Thais like it simple". Indeed, simple in the correct sense is the right expression here.
  5. TOPS Central Festival or VILLA. The problem with many imported merchandise is that some items are quickly sold out and many shops do not seem to maintain a proper supply management based on stock turnover to replace it in time. I am waiting for my sweet and sour gherkins Hainich Brand now for months (TOPS). Same for most common items like Barilla No. 1. No 5 they have sometimes in abundance. Other brands will be ignored. I suspect that supply managers here seem to think that an item is always the same regardless of brand although this is a huge mistake. Example: They discontinued the original Roses Lime juice at VILLA and substituted it with another Brand which nobody (at least not me) buys. Does their system not tell them that this was a suboptimal move ? The answer is obviously NO - since I have the strong suspicion that they dont have any system for stock turnover control which does consider expected delivery times as well. How can it be that some items are sold out for so long without any replacement ? So buying 2 bottles of Angustura if you see any and replace one of them and use the older one would be a method to counteract that. They last long. Not so for pasteurized orange juice, french brie etc. Unfortunately. Makes me not happy since it might be avoided if managed with competence.
  6. There is definitely a core of truth in what you say. Nevertheless human values (lets make it simple: to be happy) are universal. There is no discussion about them. And a nuclear strike or deployment of phosphor bombs on a home for the old age (as reported in the Swiss Press), killing of children etc. while they flee does not support that idea. I do honestly not believe that the NATO would do something like that out of the hunger for more power. So I think it is not fair to compare the previous actions of NATO with what Putin does right now and say: Som nam na.
  7. First of all, yes, most of the food there IS terrible (my first wife was a Philippinia so I have years of experience - at least it does not give you the slightest clue of an asian touch), but my theory is the other way round from yours. Maybe their original native food has not been spoiled by modern fast food in its core. I believe that their food culture has been formed by a large degree by invading Portugiese or Spanish. Now this is some hundred years ago and they might have brought with them such delicacies as "Rotten Rat Stew - Captain Style" which the creative Pinoi have developed into the form and under the name you have now. However, there are also some (rare) delicious treats. All you need is a just caught fresh fish, rubbed in salt and put on the grill. To make this taste bad you would need an outstanding talent. Sea food is not my preference but a makerel made this way, maybe served with soya souce and a bit grated radish (this is than as well known as a Japanese Shioyaki) is superb. Or a milk fish. Then they have this fish salad (raw tuna with lemon juice) which is as well known in Mexico (here we have the connection). This one is a highlight, too. And then there is leche flan as a dessert. After that I need to start to think hard of anything exeptional. There is not really such a thing as a vast excellent original Cuisine tradition, like we have in France, China, Thailand, Italy, Japan, even Germany or Spain.
  8. As long as there are nukes around there is always the latent danger that at some time in the future they will be used. And there are still some 30'000 warheads or even more around I think. Fortunately - as far as I know - there is no such thing as one big red button that only needs to be pressed and off it goes. There are a number of security mechanismns that not only one being can provoke a nuclear holocaust - and do you remember the US general that instructed his direct subordinates to call him back first (against the protocol) if a certain former president would instruct to fire out of a possible confusion in his head or elsewhere ? But I do not know how it would work in North Korea. But in Russia I suspect they have something to make it at least a little bit secure. Another scenario that I am afraid of even more is the one that is very authentically shown in the scary and very credible movie "13 Monkeys". To set free a superdeadly virus needs only one insane person if he can get hold of the staff.
  9. For a very good tea or coffee or pure drinking I would also use only good water. Filtered and irradiated water tastes not so good - for pure drinking unacceptable. So for this application we use Mont Fleur from the supermarket only. Then there is a lower grade water which we use for some standard tea/coffee/cooking - from the supermarket Singha Brand or alike - medium sized bottle at THB 35.-- At the bottom end is the water that is discussed here for cleaning vegetables etc. and some cooking, like for spaghetti etc. Our condo house sells the big bottles for 1 THB per liter.
  10. Unfortunately you are right. Looks not too god. Maybe they consolidated with another company due to scaling effects in our hurt economy. But they were a quite large company with branches in Hua Hin and Pattaya, I have rented there (Mitsubishi SUV and Almera) for many months. Maybe you just try to email [email protected] or have a look at the dolphin circus in Pattaya when you come across it. It should be visible from the outside, parking spaces are in the back near the hotel there (if they still exist)
  11. The Synology AV runs on the NAS, not the PC. But you have given the most appropriate advice: No access from the Internet, or via VPN. Let me add: Do not store sensible data on any device accessible from outside unless you do not have a really heavy protection like 2 security zones with hardware firewalls etc. But we are talking private use here so no overexagerration needed. A picture of your mom and dad having dinner together might be OK, but the key to your Cryptouniverse is a completely different ballpark. Memorable pictures are regarded as security relevant and must be stored Ransomware proof. However I would not recommend to run absolutely no protection on a PC. There are even solutions for free, so why not have it. If you have many PCs there is a chance that they somehow are connected even if you did not intend to do so. If you need something to experiment, then on a completely standalone PC via a seperate router.
  12. I would rather put data on the NAS that SHOULD be accessible from outside (like photos or films you want to show somewhere) or as a single point of access to your internal display devices (music, films in any room where you have a network connection (WiFi works wonderfully) or to connect to the build in surveillance station (just need some cameras of course as well). For backup of serious confidential data there are other solutions. My Synology has a virus scan facility by the way although it takes AGES to scan.
  13. Most has been explained already - but Synology is the way to go. A UPS (I recommend APC) is mandatory as is an external USB disc for offline backup. I use their NAS for many years now. Combined with Clickatell as SMS provider (for personal alerts). And they have a very good support. In the beginning I had some nasty problem (most probably self initiated - I like to play around with stuff) which needed a deeper look. They contacted me from Singapore while I was living in Switzerland. And all components (NAS, USB disc plus APC UPS are available in Thailand).
  14. My big recommendation: Thai Rent A Car (thairentacar.com). We have several times rented a car from them for extended periods of time before we bought our own car. They are friendly and flexible and have good conditions and of course first class insurance. We even had some incident with another car once which was handled perfectly. They are located near the roundabout in North Pattaya, but you can rent a car in another branch and give it back where you desire. We once did travel from Hua Hin to Pattaya this way and then kept the car in Pattaya for a while.
  15. I used them almost from the very beginning while I was still in Switzerland and never had any problems - even not after our move to Thailand. If you use their system build in communication channels it should work well. Trying to call them because of something is probably difficult because they might have many customers with questions. It was very convenient for buying small items online or sell small things via Ebay occasionally, a book, an old instrument you do not play anymore, things like this. The big advantage was that you had to store your credit card number only once and you did not need to transmit the data again every time you bought something. This is especially very important here in Thailand for their credit cards (even if they come with a Visa or Mastercard logo) do not offer any security. My Visa card from Switzerland had a maximum liability of the card owner of CHF 120.-- and it came with travel insurance etc. etc. Nothing I have seen here. My wife even has a credit card by invitation (and I have the partner card) and I do not see any advantage of this plastic exept a questionable social effect and that you can make reservations and pay big bills at hotels for it is recognized as credit card and not debit card. Selling small household items on Ebay (not at all in a commercial sense, just very occasionally) has been as well very convenient in the past for me. Paypal offers as well buyers protection. I have never sold anything on Ebay while in Thailand but how do I go about that if I wanted to ? I have for example a very much rare book which is of interest only to a very limited crowd. No chance to sell it by writing an advertisement and stick it on the wall at Big C. Newspapers ? Complicated as can be and probably expensive, too. I cancelled my Paypal private account immediately when I read about their new regulations. It was just the hunger for more and more data they wanted to collect even from a small user like me which put me off. I do not support the big data idea and resist that where I can. So no more Paypal for me ever again. And I am sure it was not Paypals idea to change anything at all. To buy our usual lot of Nespresso we now need to put in the credit number any single time we buy some capsules. How convenient and safe that is.
  16. Following your theory you need to be really really close to someone to "discover" the fragrance. Lets try next time in the elevator at Central when I bend my nose to the neck of the lady standing right near me and then say: "I knew it, Chanel No. 5". She would be delighted I suppose. ????
  17. I do not understand your post. I never asked for any sales. I do not recall exactly how much I paid for the Antaeus, but it must have been something around 6'000.-- THB or a bit more in between up to 7'000.--. I cannot tell if 100ml is in it - it is just always the same size I know and there is no indication on the bottle itself (maybe on the carton, but this one goes into the garbage).
  18. OK, one more about weird pricing. I invite everybody to check it by himself. When you exit BIG C Extra to the parking at the back, you will find a stand selling orange juice on the left just before the door. One small bottle with 220ml is THB 20.--. Sometimes I buy 5 for THB 100.-- (and therefore a little bit of more than 1 liter). The 1 liter bottle at the same stand sells for THB 150.--. I tried to explain this absurdity to the sales girl and what I got back was a nice smile. I am not really sure if she even understood what is wrong here.
  19. Wanna see some REALLY expensive fruits ? Here they are - a couple of japanese crown melons at a bargain price of 5 Million Yen (which amounts to something like US$ 45'000.--). No joke, you can easily check on the web. OK, now back to the discussion of an apple costing THB 80 at Villa vs. 15 at the local market. BTW, my wife just brought some kilos of strawberries home - from the local market near Tukcom - and they are extremely sweet and tasty.
  20. And it is not only the price but the products as well. Some procurement managers here obviously have an extremely unlucky hand for they pick mostly inferior products if they could have much better quality at the same price. Maybe they are forced to do so or they dont have the knowledge how a 36 months old parmesan is different from a 12 months old one. I am still desperately looking for really tasty orange juice and apple juice (regardless of price). I knew exactly what to import and people would love it. As a private person and without company I most probably could not do it so I am seriously thinking of talking to some managers here or restaurant owners who could maybe try to follow my recommendations and import on their behalf. They would make a lot of money if advertised properly then.
  21. While we are at fragrances at the time please allow me to hijack this thread a little bit. My wife is looking for the ordinary original "Opium" (red) and was told by sales personnel in Central Festival that it is not available - whatever they meant - not produced anymore (which I doubt), not available in Pattaya (possible). Anybody knows a reputable shop (preferably Pattaya, but BKK is OK, too) that sells it ?
  22. I have not bought Kouros in Thailand, but I suspect that the official YSL shop in Central Festival cannot afford not to sell the original stuff - although there is no guarantee exept your nose.
  23. Exactly what happened to me. Exept that Kouros is not really an aftershave. It is eau de toilette. Now I use mostly Antaeus:. Available at Central Festival. As far as showering goes: 2 x per day minimum with Shokubutsu Monogatari.
  24. This is what my father used and I am 66 years old.
