Anti-Israel protests in Bangkok fuel concern over Israelis

Two anti-Israel protests have been held outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok over the past two weeks, drawing groups with sharply different motivations, according to an analysis by Khaosod English senior staff writer Pravit Rojanaphruk.

Pravit said concern over Israeli conduct in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Iran had converged with suspicion towards what some Thai critics call "grey Israeli" visitors and expatriates. The term is used by critics alleging disrespectful behaviour, opaque business dealings or attempts to gain excessive economic influence.

He said some Thais fear Israelis could become entrenched in property, tourism and other businesses, or undermine Thai sovereignty. These are perceptions held by some protesters, rather than findings yet established.

Different groups, common protest

Pravit described two strands among demonstrators: Thai ultranationalists focused on alleged "grey Israeli" activity, and others whose objections centre on Israel's military actions and treatment of Palestinians.

He cited claims that Israeli expatriates, including some who have acquired Thai citizenship, are involved in building a large Chabad House in central Bangkok, expanding cemeteries and operating businesses in Phuket. Critics quoted in the analysis argue that Israeli interests are effectively behind accommodation, transport, restaurant and tour businesses in some areas, with limited benefit for local people.

The analysis linked the mood partly to high-profile cases involving Israeli tourists accused of brash or culturally insensitive behaviour. It also placed the protests in the context of Thai economic stagnation, xenophobia and a history of concerns about foreign influence.

Gaza and West Bank concerns

Pravit also pointed to international reporting on the Gaza war and violence in the occupied West Bank as a major factor shaping opinion.

He noted that the UK government had warned Israel over tenders for more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 area near Jerusalem, which Britain considers a "red line". The UK has said settlement expansion could fragment the West Bank and weaken prospects for a contiguous Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

According to the analysis, Britain is considering restrictions on goods and services from West Bank settlements and limits on British firms financing, supporting or advertising settlement projects. Israel has warned that unilateral British sanctions could harm diplomatic ties, and has threatened retaliation. Israel denies the allegations and has closed the British consulate in Jerusalem.

Pravit also cited a Channel 4 News report saying the UN had recorded nearly 2,000 Palestinians injured by Israeli forces or settlers this year, with 85 killed, while three Israelis had been killed.

Potential diplomatic impact

The Thai-Cambodian conflict had also heightened fears of outside threats. Veteran activist and former Yellow Shirt leader Sondhi Limthongkul, who co-led anti-Cambodia protests last year that attracted about 10,000 people, led Thursday's anti-Israel rally, attended by an estimated 300 to 400 demonstrators.

Pravit said a larger mobilisation in coming weeks could prompt the Thai government to try to appease protesters, potentially affecting Thai-Israeli relations. He added that Israel's ambassador to Thailand, Alona Fisher-Kamm, would play an important role in handling the issue.

The Jewish problem.

That's Nazi stuff.

This topic is not about the west bank.

Neither is it about Japanese restaurants and HAMAS. It's about, sovereignty and bad, perhaps illegal behaviour. Why worry? If everything is above board, then you are all clear.

That's part of hysteria here.

Random incidents by a few Israelis overblown and distorted to an insane level

Obviously some players in Thai politics are intentionally playing this game for reasons that have nothing to do with Jews.

There would be a risk that the Thai person would want "Jews out" the cemetery 😄?

Chabad folks are seen here surveying land to purchase for a cemetary. But the Thai analysts seem to think they don't have a right to the land.

But they aren't random incidents. Not every single incident is reported in the media. I guess these things reach a critical mass. It's not as if they haven't been told over the years. Excuses made at every turn. So now the Thais are asserting themselves. For a non-confrontational nation, there must be a lot going on in the background for them to take this step.

Sorry, I surrender. It's getting too complicated and I don't have any more time to devote to this.

Don't worry yourself about it .

Don't be so concerned .

Its just some people trying to open a cemetery .

Its not a big deal or issue

It was garbage.

One man's comment.

Representing the idiocy of one man.

Can we agree that Chabad houses are there for mainly Jewish Israeli's traveling around Thailand, with the occasional non Israeli Jew thrown in?

As was reported, a Jewish man stated to a Thai official there on official business, this is "Israeli Territory" from that can we agree the man was more than likely Israeli?

If that is the case, how do you suppose the Thai official now feels after this incident?

Yes, an Australian man kills an underaged girl stuffs her body in a suitcase and dumps the suitcase in wasteland .

One month later, all forgotton about .

An Israeli woman doesn't take her shoes off in a restaurant , still talked about and referenced over a year later .

An Israeli keeping her shoes on is worse than an Australian child killer .

No Australians were harmed in your post.

Yes without a doubt Jews and Israelis are being irrationally scapegoated. Its very ugly.

Maybe it's not just one comment.

Maybe it's the way they conduct themselves in general.

I really don't know. I don't like there and it's hard to get into the mindset of the Thais.

The implication is that those isolated incidents represent all Jews and all Israelis in Thailand.

They may be the social media inflamed perception of many but in no way whatsoever does it reflect objective reality.

I agree with you, but it does represent the opinion of the masses and that opinion was formed exactly as I described.

Citizens forget, they are representing their country when overseas.

The issues are around land ownership.

Is it a true Thai who leases the land to Israelis, is it a nominee company, or as I believe, an Israeli who has somehow acquired Thai citizenship.

You can be sure it will be investigated in full, especially if it’s a foreigner who has somehow acquired Thai citizenship. That needs to be squeaky clean and it probably isn’t.

You've been in Thailand long enough to know that with Thai's it is all about respect, we foreigners are at the bottom of the ladder, you can jump up and down till the end of time complaining about anything you like but unless the Thai's sympathies with your point of view, it means nothing to them.

Israeli's have done a few things to upset the Thai's, all over the place, the 4 deported fro Pai, over the hospital thing, this one in the Chabad and the woman saying we built your country etc.

All that is disrespectful to them in a big way, Thai officialdom, Hospital Doctor, and a retail business, it's gone out on Thai news networks which they all watch, nobody looks good here, we are all tolerated as long as we keep our noses clean, so don't FA wherever you come from.

As far as the Jew thing goes I agree a few bad apples should not apply to all Jews but that's your problem, trying to differentiate between non Israeli Jews and Israeli Jews, westerners get it but the Thai's don't.

I see no evidence as yet about the opinion of the majority of Thais.

I see political agitators and Islamic activists at some demonstations,

Well under 1000 people total at all the demos so far as far as I can tell and in Phuket looks to be almost all Islamists (who it's fair to assume are mostly about trying to protest Israeli government policy as opposed to tourist behavior).

I see Jews Out signs.

But I have no idea what Somchai on the street is thinking about all this.

Do you have a survey to show us?

Yes I understand the respect hierarchy here and how foreigners have almost no rights here.

It's a one way street.

But the problem now is that the political agitators leading this anti-Israel now anti Jewish crusade have globalized this internal conflict.

It's significant that the US envoy has taken notice.

I think the people behind this do see that the Israeli government is very unpopular globally these days and think it's going to be a win for them to make all this now internationally heard noise.

They may have made a few mistakes.

The vast majority of people in the world make a distinction between a small number of Israeli tourists and the actions of the Israeli government.

An even bigger majority well understand that promoting demos with explicitly racist Jew hating slickly made signage is very unfair and a really bad look for Thailand. Jews Out is the opposite of the Land of Smiles image promoted by the tourism authorities.

If they had kept this local it would have been one thing.

But the orgamizars clearly wamted international press and now they have it.

So its not only local any more and I think the organizers of this are inviting negative international responses that might surprise them. I don't know what exactly yet but FAFO is not out of the question.

Apart from the fact that statement makes no sense at all, perhaps you have some proof to show it's validity. Does the article encompass only Israeli tourists?

The US envoy is part of the problem, the only reason he's here is to try to lesson any bad feeling towards Israel and the US their biggest supporter, I have no doubt he will be trying to get the Thai government to close this all down to stop all the negative publicity towards Israel, nothing more and nothing less.

Ordinary Thai people will just be seeing the Israeli dis-respectfulness towards them, the genies out the bottle on that, it may well suck for ordinary non-Israeli Jews like yourself but as I've said elsewhere be nice and you get no problems.

The World opinion of Israel is dropping through the floor, people have had enough of the lies and misinformation, to much is being seen by everybody, no matter what happened on the 7th.

I disagree with you entirely but thanks for sharing,

The organizers wanted this to go international (I've heard them say that clearly) and they got their wish,

Be careful what you wish for,

In many things in life, there are often unintended consequences.

Was the "Our money builds your country" (sealed with a wink) put on Thai TV???

...After refusing to take her shoes off in a Thai owned business that insists on it 😂

Imagine doing that in a country where face is so important and where many of the inhabitants have very little besides national pride.

Sure was a classic of the entitled j genre.
