Anti-Israel protests in Bangkok fuel concern over Israelis

Two anti-Israel protests have been held outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok over the past two weeks, drawing groups with sharply different motivations, according to an analysis by Khaosod English senior staff writer Pravit Rojanaphruk.

Pravit said concern over Israeli conduct in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Iran had converged with suspicion towards what some Thai critics call "grey Israeli" visitors and expatriates. The term is used by critics alleging disrespectful behaviour, opaque business dealings or attempts to gain excessive economic influence.

He said some Thais fear Israelis could become entrenched in property, tourism and other businesses, or undermine Thai sovereignty. These are perceptions held by some protesters, rather than findings yet established.

Different groups, common protest

Pravit described two strands among demonstrators: Thai ultranationalists focused on alleged "grey Israeli" activity, and others whose objections centre on Israel's military actions and treatment of Palestinians.

He cited claims that Israeli expatriates, including some who have acquired Thai citizenship, are involved in building a large Chabad House in central Bangkok, expanding cemeteries and operating businesses in Phuket. Critics quoted in the analysis argue that Israeli interests are effectively behind accommodation, transport, restaurant and tour businesses in some areas, with limited benefit for local people.

The analysis linked the mood partly to high-profile cases involving Israeli tourists accused of brash or culturally insensitive behaviour. It also placed the protests in the context of Thai economic stagnation, xenophobia and a history of concerns about foreign influence.

Gaza and West Bank concerns

Pravit also pointed to international reporting on the Gaza war and violence in the occupied West Bank as a major factor shaping opinion.

He noted that the UK government had warned Israel over tenders for more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 area near Jerusalem, which Britain considers a "red line". The UK has said settlement expansion could fragment the West Bank and weaken prospects for a contiguous Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

According to the analysis, Britain is considering restrictions on goods and services from West Bank settlements and limits on British firms financing, supporting or advertising settlement projects. Israel has warned that unilateral British sanctions could harm diplomatic ties, and has threatened retaliation. Israel denies the allegations and has closed the British consulate in Jerusalem.

Pravit also cited a Channel 4 News report saying the UN had recorded nearly 2,000 Palestinians injured by Israeli forces or settlers this year, with 85 killed, while three Israelis had been killed.

Potential diplomatic impact

The Thai-Cambodian conflict had also heightened fears of outside threats. Veteran activist and former Yellow Shirt leader Sondhi Limthongkul, who co-led anti-Cambodia protests last year that attracted about 10,000 people, led Thursday's anti-Israel rally, attended by an estimated 300 to 400 demonstrators.

Pravit said a larger mobilisation in coming weeks could prompt the Thai government to try to appease protesters, potentially affecting Thai-Israeli relations. He added that Israel's ambassador to Thailand, Alona Fisher-Kamm, would play an important role in handling the issue.

Israelis with Thai citizenship, really? There can't be many of those. It's very hard to get Thai citizenship.

The embassy ban is very surprising to me.

Surprising to me too. None of that list seems off-limits to Sondhi's mobs throughout the years. Embassies, government offices, UN building, etc.

I find the story about your friend considering your long pattern of extremely inflammatory anti-Israel posts as well as even employing racist Jew hating tropes about the "chosen people" regularly to be extremely suspect.

Jewish spaces all over the world NEED to have good security.

Was your "friend" going there to sincerely paricipate in the religious and community activities there or was on a kind of spy mission?

It was a very sincere inquiry on his part to see whether or not the temple was someplace he wanted to visit regularly. The fact that he was not only not welcomed but surrounded by policemen within minutes was rather shocking and alarming. It simply proves the extreme levels of exclusion when it comes to many Israelis and their reaction to people outside of their own communities. Being Jewish wasn't enough, you had to be an Israeli Jew who spoke Hebrew to get in, as if it was an exclusive establishment of some sort.

What do you think about my post means less than zero to me I post them with a level of sincerity and we disagree and have a very different perspective on things. That is on you if you question my sincerity just because you don't agree with my opinion.

It was truly pathetic and highly dishonorable behavior on the part of the local Israelis. No wonder the local Thais are up in arms about the Israeli visitors.

I never had any interest in visiting a Chabad place. They are very Orthodox Jews and I'm an atheist.

I have been to a number of Israeli dominated spaces in Thailand. Yeah they speak Hebrew and I don't, but never turned away and they would talk to me amiably if approached them. It was all very normal.

I never saw any Israeli Jew behaving badly.

Their culture is very different of course and I can see how their directness could clash with Thai culture.

One experience at a place with a restaurant and synagogue was intense though. They needed another Jewish man for a minyan. I was approached and I told them I'm not religious, then was asked if I have a Jewish mother, well yes, then please join us. I did as a favor. It was all in Hebrew and not fun for me as again I'm an atheist.

I've been to Italian spaces in Thailand where everyone is speaking Italian. It's the same feeling. Normal when you're an outside to the larger group.

Not sure that's the reason. It's more likely because China usually retaliates when its citizen are targeted. Israel has no significant retaliation power over Thailand.

And China has the will and determination to use that power. Western countries do not. They most often will leave their citizens hanging. The Italian school kids on the BTS was a prime example. The Italian embassy couldn't wait to apologize for something the Chinese would have turned around and accused the Thais of. In fact the Chinese did that shortly afterwards when a misbehaving Chinese woman waiting in line was defended as a victim.

There's a really good restaurant in an Israeli-run tourist hotel a few doors down from the Bangkok Chabad. (Don't tell Sondhi). BTW, I didn't even know what a Chabad was until a friend pointed it out to me and explained what they do there.

Could it be that the worldwide experience of Israel's invasion of other countries is leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth? The same experience from the United States. The attempt at world domination and genocide does not make you popular.

Israeli tourists and expats are not their government.

I don't agree there was genocide but wrong topic to discuss that.

You should save your dislike for the Countries that caused the wars when they attacked Israel, causing Israel to respond

Nick, how many thousands of your posts have the word 'Israel' in them? Maybe 80-90%?

If DJT had the balls, he would stop supplying weapons to Israel, but he will not do this because he would lose the Jewish votes.

Bibi and his cabal of Jewish zealots are a bloody disgrace and I look forward to seeing them all being tried for genocide. The UN have issued Israel with memoranda after memoranda and the Jews take no notice. If the truth be known Bibi and his army would be delighted to wipeout every Palestinian in existence and the world should be bloodywell ashamed of itself for allowing the killings of innocent Palestians. SHAME ON THEM ALL, including the Palestinian armed factions. Whatever happened to the "Balfour agreement"?

American Jews mostly do not vote for any republican.

Thailand is an overwhelmingly tolerant and peaceful country.
If Jews did something to make Thais dislike them and want to kick them out en masse then I guarantee you

it is warranted and has nothing to do with religion.

That's YOUR hang up. Not theirs.

Its just a few 100 Muslim protestors , probably funded by Iran, that oppose Jews in Thailand

Thing is - and while I am annoyed about the Israelis here too - the fact is you could 'pinpoint' other nationalities on that map. Russian dominance (Pattaya and Phuket) and Chinese dominance in different areas (Chinese in Bangkok around Rama 9 and RCA).

Perhaps because your 'sponsors' are only concerned about

wars that Israel are fighting ..all 7 fronts ??? is Sudan one of those fronts ?

Not forgetting Arab street in Phuket , not just a street, an area dominated by Arabs .

Yet, 1 Israeli chabad house is considered to be an "invasion"

"Arab Street" in Phuket refers to the vibrant cluster of Middle Eastern restaurants, shisha lounges, halal eateries, and Arabic signage located around Soi Sansabai and Rat Uthit Song Roi Pi Road near Patong Beach
