Anutin orders faster deportations of foreign offenders

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed governors across Thailand to act quickly against foreign nationals who break the law, exploit Thais or engage in what he described as undesirable behaviour.

Speaking at the Interior Ministry at about 8.30am on 17 September, Anutin said foreigners who earn an honest living, respect Thai law and do not take advantage of local people remain welcome. He specifically mentioned Phuket and Surat Thani, but said similar action was needed nationwide.

Deportation action without delays

For foreigners living in, investing in or visiting Thailand, the immediate message is not a change to legal immigration status or visa rules, but a tougher enforcement approach where authorities believe there is evidence of wrongdoing.

Anutin told governors and district chiefs to stop handling cases one at a time and use their full legal powers. He said he had signed an Interior Ministry deportation announcement and that officials should act immediately when a case met the criteria.

He told provincial authorities not to delay an expulsion because of uncertainty over the cost of an air ticket. Provinces could pay first and later arrange reimbursement, he said.

"If their conduct is undesirable, there is only one option: leave. That is all," Anutin said, adding that appeals would not be a problem.

He said keeping offending foreigners in Thailand for legal proceedings could leave the authorities responsible for food, water and accommodation, whereas deportation would remove them from the country.

Focus on land, nominees and illegal work

Anutin ordered closer monitoring of offences involving foreign nationals, including the use of Thai nominees, landholding, fraudulent business activity, working without permits and using Thailand as a base for crime.

He said the cases did not concern one nationality alone, referring to foreign nationals from Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe and Africa.

The prime minister also told governors to investigate premises displaying signs barring Thai people from entering. Thai people should generally be able to enter establishments across the country, he said, with private residences the exception.

Even then, he said a private homeowner should not display a sign saying Thai people were not welcome. Anyone prepared to erect such a sign should face closer scrutiny for other possible offences, he added.

Religious sites and cemetery request

Anutin also raised concerns about foreign nationals establishing religious sites without approval, saying such places must respect Thai society and culture.

Referring to a recent request to establish a private cemetery, he said: "If they are going to die, they should go die back home, not here."

He also said a business licensed as a restaurant could not operate a religious site inside the premises. Thailand remained willing to welcome tourists and investors where the relationship benefited both sides, he said, but spending money in the country did not give anyone the right to exploit others or carry out illegal activities.

Granted the Thai constitution refers to protections for Thai citizens and not to traditional democratic "we the people" but -

All lot of contradictions in Anutin's proposals seem to exacerbate further Thai xenophobia.

But okay to exploit all other nationalities? Only Thais protected?

But okay barring all other nationalities from entering?

"local people" are any nationality or only Thais? I expect only Thais is intended.

So prosecution and trial is made irrelevant in order to avoid costly humanitarian support for the foreign alleged defendant being held in detention? This goes beyond even the so-called Thai-styled democracy (meaning not Western-styled democracy).

Yes, sounds like the "guilty until proved innocent" scenario.

I see from your number of posts that presumably you live here, so I am surprised that you do not seem to realise that in the majority of cases, if you invest a lot of money you CAN do whatever you want. (And by "investing" that covers brown paper bags as well!)

I've invested a lot of money (relative), without the need to ever stuff a brown bag/envelope. Ever broken a minor traffic law every now & then 🙄 days past and just a small contribution to PoPo, fine, legally paid, with no issue or fear of deportation.

No need to support corruption if you follow the rules. Just avoid them felony arrests.

Mr. Jingthing, if you read his posts across the forum, has a real Love/Hate thing going with Thailand - like many farangs who are retired here - he's not unique. On the one hand he is highly critical of Thai nationalism, and on the other hand he's scared to death that the Thai authorities might eventually decide to toss foreigners like himself out of the country. He doesn't have a real Plan B.

Everyone needs a Plan B, and Plan C for that matter. And then stop worrying and enjoy your life here in the LOS.

For the annual visa renewal, you are now required to submit a hospital statement certifying that you will not die in the coming year.

Similarly, going forward, if a Thai immigration officer happens to ask you if you're feelin OK today on your next visit to their offices, (sa bi dee mai), keep your guard up when you respond. I'm fine (sabai dee) is the response to give. Don't be honest and tell him/her you're a little tired today. It may be a test of your immigration status and the wrong answer will result in being told to go home and die. Trust no one. :) 😀

I am not talking about the normal "man in the street" like you (and me) that play by the rules and don't have any hassle.

I'm talking about the "businessman" with pots of cash who wants to make even more pots of cash, and does it by "investing" one or two of his pots via brown paper bags!

Due to Thai driving habits ...many foreign pedestrians and road users have no choice but to die here.

True but they aren't requesting to be buried in a specific area for their religion only! 🤣 Hard for some to see but there is a difference!

Near my home S.F. there is a small city outside called " Colma " this area is where majority of cementary located, Some are title Greek, Chinese, Italians, but they can't discriminate. You see the difference!

They won't even let us die here.

I guess we're allowed to die by suicide or murder, but it's strictly forbidden to die of natural causes here now. Thank you for clarifying that Mr. Anutin. I must be very careful to make sure that I don't die, and upset you.

Anutin knows what the West is like, and as a Thai leader, he wants to protect his country from the same type of cultural demise. Thailand does not want to be assimilated into the Borg-hive-mind of Western liberal democracy.

The problem with this statement is that it is not the West that is frogmarching Thailand into a giant bee hive. It's China. It is far and away China more than any other country. But he calls China "big brother." And how true that is.

Not necessary for them to do that either, brown bag it. Sure they could invest plenty legally here. Though would think the returns in home country or markets would be better.

Brown bagging it is OK if trying to hide funds for whatever reasong ... but ... som nan naa if not above board. Risk assessment vs profits or pentalty.

Live with them choices. Got enough grey / silver hair 🙄 Besides, can't take it with me.

Exhibit A in putting forward your case would be:

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Whilst Thailand has a process for cancelling a foreigner's permission to stay, it does not actively deport foreigners. Rather it locks them up in the Immigration Detention Centre indefinitely but places the onus on the foreigner to buy a direct flight to their home country (if such a flight exists) with the assistance of friends and family members on the outside. The funds most certainly do not come from the Thai government.

Therefore, the Thai Prime Minister's insistence on speedier deportations could be very easily accomplished by the Thai Government flying them out. Somehow, I am very confident this is not what he meant but it would achieve his goal.

Indeed:

I am thinking that the long awaited tourist tax could usefully be used as a deportation tax. They don't really intend to use any of it to actually benefit tourists so at least it would be better than simply lining someones pocket.

The cemetery was a zoning and licensing issue - it was never a foreigner vs local issue. If it had been a Thai cemetery, it too will be removed but this did not happen because Thai cremates their dead. In any event, I am beginning to see Anutin's frustration and him breaking into irresponsible and immature comments serving only his political base and enraging all the long term foreign residents. He should not complicate matters.

Hm, I have seen dozens of Chinese cemeteries all over Thailand !!

Rich Thais of Chinese descent like to get buried the Chinese way !

You mention noted correctly which is what the heart of the problem today which the majority of people visiting or living here don't get the big picture.

When it comes to the leaders of this country I personally don't give a rat ass who they are and even whether they went to Harvard or not the are all in the same boat corrupt because to be in office any part of government anywhere in Thailand it is all about nepotism old boys network.

I don't think there is one person in government when watching the tube at night the channel that shows government events nightly aren't related in some manner. Personally there is no rags to rich stories that a person can come from nothing and ne PM of this country.

I don't pay much attention to the guy Anutin if he has said and done the things as noted at least I know where he stands he isn't much different than the lowest and highest Thai I've met they might not say it to your face but that pride is embedded in all of them.

When I first got here I had encounters over the smallest stuff because I look like them but once they found out I wasn't the level of the incident increase 200% towards me one encounter I came within a CM of being killed.

When it comes to this article there isn't anything that he said that any expat living should be concern if you follow the rules even if you don't which is the case for everyone. Although he has nothing to do with this article the hate or dislike sounds the name same as for Trump.

It isnt just here but every country Thailand included is to protect their own guess what it is like make America great again, no country want outsider to commit crimes to take over their country Thailand guess what, England, France, Spain, Australia.

Because they are scare <deleted> of the Chinese, loss of face call it what you want how do I know I've been saying it for years the Chinese Triads have been here for centuries up north half of my family specifically from Hong Kong are triads which is how I got introduced as early as 70's to Thailand.

Everything that has been happening isn't about farangs it is about the Chinese Triads which they are scare to point fingers at only one person has done it

CHUWIT, formerly a MP, nick name the massage king who sounded years back Triads had taken over the country.

It started with Tuhao, then follow by the raid in Pattaya leader Feng, Mr. Ming which were tipped off like Thaksin and escape arrest left country. Prelimary investigation found after these Triad faction had taken over and control more that half of the province ln Thailand and on record 72 of them digging deeper these Triads, their businesses, the money laundering their partners "NOMINEES "

familiar word included the riches Thais in the country.

All the stories today about crackdown on so call nominees are the small fish! The big fish they can't go after doing so exposes all of them including those at the very top most likely include the man here so disliked!

It is nothing but Smoke and Mirror all show! For their people who are so nationalistic and blind to what is happening. Like everything they got to place blame and the white man or foreigners is an easy target. This is the same with the banking it is the expat when everyone knows it was the Chinese who were paying bank official BBC in Pattaya to turn a blind eye, 200,000 baht a pop to open accounts for Chinese tourist.

As noted I've been here 20 years not looking for trouble done good done bad but if you play their game anything this guy's say is nothing to worry about.

Some guys here are scared of their own shadow

Keeping their country keeps the system in place doing so the corruption money keeps them in office for their siblingss of the future.

He forgot USA, Australia and new Zealand.

And who will define what is undesirable behaviour?

Could be anything that he dislike?

Signs stating "Thai people are not welcome"?

I didn't hear anything about it.

Any way a xenophobic attitude could be perceived here?!
