Australian's Bangkok ICU care costs $50,000 a week

An Australian man is in a coma in a Bangkok intensive care unit following an accident in Thailand, with his family saying his medical bills have already exceeded $135,000.

Sydney model and Copini Beauty co-founder Casey James said her father had undergone multiple emergency brain operations and had spent 10 days in the ICU as of Sunday, 23 August.

James, 28, said she received a call from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs telling her that her father had been involved in an accident and was in a Bangkok ICU.

"Within two hours, my husband and I were on a flight to Thailand," she wrote on Instagram.

She gave not further details of the accident, but did state that her father had previously survived a serious motorcycle crash in March 2025, pulling through, after the hospital had described his injuries as life threatening.

Family faces uncertain wait in Bangkok

James said the extent of her father's future needs was not yet known, but described him as "one hell of a fighter".

IMG_1023.png

"My dad has been in a coma for ten days and counting. What his future looks like is unknown," she wrote.

She added that her mother's 57th birthday fell on the day of her post, saying she was sitting in the ICU while remembering her mother, who had died from cancer.

James urged others to hold loved ones close, saying life could change "in a blink of an eye".

ICU and medical evacuation costs mount

A GoFundMe appeal started by James's cousin, Bridgette Pereira, is seeking $250,000 to help cover the man's treatment. It had received well over $36,000 in donations by Sunday.

In a note on the fundraising page, James said more than $135,000 had already been incurred for emergency brain surgery and continuing ICU care.

IMG_1025.jpeg

"The cost of keeping Dad in the ICU is approximately $50,000 per week, and the cost of transporting him safely home to Australia is expected to be around $500,000," she wrote.

Those sums do not include long-term care and rehabilitation expected after he returns to Australia. James said the family had been told he was likely to need ongoing medical support, potentially for life.

A warning over medical cover in Thailand

The case underlines the potentially substantial cost of emergency private hospital treatment and medical evacuation for foreign visitors and residents in Thailand. James has not stated whether her father held travel or health insurance.

Foreigners arranging travel insurance should check the policy's cover for emergency treatment, intensive care, pre-existing conditions and repatriation, as medical evacuation can involve specialist staff and equipment.

In Australia they say when people drive on flooded roads ' a bloody idiot'. In Thailand if ride on a motor bike same saying applies, especially if not experienced on motorbike and especially if no helmet

Which city? Do they not have public hospitals? Why do farang mostly go to private hospitals? Do public hospitals have ICU?

In Thailand the same doctors and surgeons work in both public and private hospitals. My 4 hour surgery for a broken leg in Chiang Mai 3 years ago was just 130,000 thb ..had I gone to the private hospital that the same surgeon would have done the procedure and it would have cost over $600,000! Same doc but in a more pleasant atmosphere.

Let's not forget that the racist Thai government allow medical facilities to charge foreigners double what thais pay for any treatment, and the racist Thai medical facilities take full advantage of the fact, its disgusting !

Whatever the cause we would all feel deep concern if it was a parent of ours. There is always a lot of moralising in these situations but stuff happens. Thailand needs to improve its medical funding for ordinary hospitals. Thais tell me that in real emergencies family members face better emergency treatment in private hospitals in larger cities. Indeed in life threatening situations if they can afford it rural ppl will send family members to say the 'Bangkok' branded private hospitals etc

Thailand is a an unequal society but in Europe/Aus/NZ we know that the larger local hospitals are able to handle most serious cases like heart attacks /strokes and major traffic accidents. In Thailand I get the impression access to good private hospitals depends on your wealth and income not your needs, especially in rural areas like the North East etc.

Not entirely 'unhelpful'... a lot of useful info in the post!

eg:- without knowing if he was drunk/drugged up/wearing helmet/had motorbike licence/had insurance etc.. DO NOT WASTE DONATING to this m0r0n! Leave him where he is..

Why should innocent people who would probably in most (if not all) cases get the proper insurance, and do the right things in Thailand.

FAFO!

No Insurance, drunk, no licence, no Helmet, drugs in system maybe? (a total loser if he did not learn from 2025 accident... a deadbeat)

I was going to donate 5 thb to this loser, but have decided to keep my 5 thb.

The guy's famliy can take out 2nd or 3rd mortgages for him if they love him so much.

A better idea though: cancel the GoFundMe, turn off the machines he is on at hospital, let him pass away, hire a tuk tuk for 300 thb and dump him outside a Temple... they will then look after him and burn him.. (end of story)

Again, what a total loser!!!!!!! A lot of GoFundMe's are for patient's family to help them pay off their own mortgages. They 'use' relative's conditions for their own selfish purposes.

Harsh response but outlines today's reality. Before donating people want complete transparency. If the family can't and won't provide a complete and honest account of the events, this is what they can expect. An unsympathetic response with negative feelings and speculation.

I suspect he was unconscious and didn't make that choice.

If you're unconscious after a bad accident, do you figure the ambulance is going to take you to a private hospital, or a government hospital, given that I think they are generally funded by finder's fees from the hospital?

I thinking similar and that with those injuries the Doctor onboard the ambulance may have advised going to the private hospital because it has whatever medical equipment that may he needed and Doctors more readily available without delay.

Just like to add to your comment of innocent people. Innocence can be in the form of innocent people being injured or killed by this drunk/drugged individual if he is in a position to ride motorbike again if he recovers.

There's a ton of reasons to go private. I use Bumrungrad and Sametivej, realizing I'm paying a lot more. Partly because they have all my records from when I had great employer provided insurance, and both have done a great job. In English.

In this guy's case, I'm sure they hauled him in unconscious, and I suspect the private hospital won't release him to a cheaper place unless he settles up first.

This is where the "living will" would have been helpful. Very little chance of him having a normal and productive life if he survives.

I can’t understand a situation where someone can afford to travel overseas but cannot/ does not get the proper insurance..sure in cases of special circumstances (which i cant think of atm) perhaps a money raise otherwise get the proper insurance cover and don’t be a fool!

There's a simple answer: require every tourist to buy accident insurance when entering the country. Insurance the even covers idiocy on motorcycles. I don't know what that would cost. Maybe not too much for a short term policy.

Neurosurgeons are never cheap. I don't care where you're from or where you go. Personally, I wouldn't want to go to a state hospital or one of the "public hospitals" with all the other chickens and goats. I've seen what goes on in there, and I would not want to be in one. I already told my wife "you sent me to a private international hospital" if something happens to me, I'll pay the bill. This gentleman is very unfortunate having multiple brain operations. He probably can't be moved because at $50,000 dollar a week, he might as well get an air ambulance to transport him to his home country... if that's what they think is a cheaper/better alternative. And by the looks of that diamond (assuming it's real) on his daughters hand, someone close to him has money.

If that ring contains a genuine diamond or other kind of valuable gem, I would sell it before starting a fund raising page — or at least remove it before a photo is taken — seems like too many people forget both insurance and common sense.

Maybe Thailand could just charge a larger entry fee and establish a pool for the payment of hospital bills for all tourists.

No, the extreme price differential is quite common! Some years ago I had an extremely violent headache, which was diagnosed through a brain scan at the local military hospital as a brain haemorrhage and I was advised to have the operation at Hua Hin General or a private one. The quote from one of HH's private hospital was 1 million Baht for the operation and 1million for "aftercare". I was in my 70's at the time and didn't have health insurance. I was transfered by ambulance to HUA HIN GENERAL and was operated on the same evening. The neuro surgeon visited me twice a day including weekends for 7 days before I was discharged. The bill for both hospitals came to just over 80,000Baht.

It is more than likely that the same neuro surgeon would have been the same person that would have operated on me at the private hospital as neuro surgeons are not in abundance. My recovery time was spent on the general ward not in a private room so this reduced the cost but HH General have in the past 5 year completely refurbished the General wards to a very high standard. Private hospitals are fine, but by hell they know how to charge; excessively in my opinion.

Was he a "resident"? – a long stay? Or was he a tourist?

Those involved in victim blame are not helping – and most probably don't have adequate insurance themselves – and are unaware of it too!

Appropriate insurance is the key. - It seems for one reason or another in this case they aren't paying out – and let's face it, they will do anything not to...

If a long-term stayer, everyone should make sure they have adequate insurance.

If you are a visitor, then make sure you have repatriation included...

However, is there possible Thai government compensation for foreigners in serious accidents in Thailand?

For foreigners there is the Emergency Relief Fund – the government occasionally runs temporary budgets offering up to 500k Baht for serious medical care or 1M Baht for death/disability.

There are zero payouts if you are at fault... any negligence, illegal acts (no helmet, no valid driving licence, or DUI), or risky behaviour instantly disqualifies you.

Compulsory Vehicle Insurance: If a registered vehicle is involved, this mandatory cover pays basic medical costs to anyone injured, regardless of fault.

There is also the possibility of legal processes. Under Thai law you can sue a liable party or business for damages, but this is a lengthy court process, and it is not worth pursuing a "man of straw".

So you should never rely on the government to bail you out. Every foreigner should make sure they have travel or health insurance.
