Bangkok gunman found dead after Bang Phlat fire

A man was found dead inside a burning home in Bangkok's Bang Phlat district after allegedly firing multiple shots as firefighters tried to reach the property on 25 September 2026.

Police later recovered two M60 machine guns, a Desert Eagle handgun, ammunition and several objects believed to be explosive devices from the house in Soi Charatlap, off Sirindhorn Road.

The fire began at about 9.25am, with initial reports suggesting people could be trapped inside. The emergency call was received by the 199 hotline centre, which dispatched firefighters, rescue workers and water tenders from Bang O Fire and Rescue Station.

Fire crews forced back by gunfire

Firefighters initially entered with hose-lines to tackle the blaze and look for possible survivors. Several shots were then fired from within the property, forcing crews to withdraw to a position outside the firing range.

Police and special operations officers were called in, while a SWAT team of more than 10 officers surrounded the house. Authorities set up a 200-metre exclusion zone and evacuated nearby residents as firefighters worked to prevent the flames spreading to neighbouring homes.

The fire was brought under control after more than an hour, although smoke remained in the area.

Weapons and suspected explosives seized

Officers found the man, reported to be the son of retired Maj Gen Saman Kesorn-in, on the second floor of the building, seated in a chair with a gun in his hand, according to initial reports. Police later confirmed he had used a firearm to take his own life.

The house contained more than ordinary household weapons, officials said. Along with the two M60 machine guns and the high-powered Desert Eagle pistol, officers found numerous unidentified explosive objects, including one in a room near where the man was discovered.

Explosive ordnance disposal officers, forensic teams and armed special operations personnel inspected the building. Their work included removing and destroying explosives and attempting to establish the origin of the military-style weapons.

Police are investigating the man's possible stress, his motive and the circumstances that led to the fire and gunfire. The investigation remains ongoing.
