Bangkok police have detained a 48-year-old man accused of snatching a Chanel handbag worth more than 100,000 baht from an Italian female tourist in the Talat Noi area.
Police said the suspect, identified only as Prawit, was held with the bag after officers and members of the public gave chase in Soi Wanit 2. The reported theft and chase, was followed by a formal at a house in the same soi.
The black leather Chanel bag, valued at more than 100,000 baht, was recovered and returned as evidence, police said.
Suspect allegedly fled into Soi Wanit 2
The case was announced on 24 July by officers from Plabplachai 2 Police Station in Bangkok's Samphanthawong district.
Pol Col Witthawat Kengkhoom, the station superintendent, and Pol Lt Col Sutin Yunsaman, deputy superintendent of investigations, ordered the arrest operation. Investigators Pol Lt Col Thanakrit Wutthimanojinda and Pol Lt Col Harn Khiaomanee, along with the station's investigative team, carried it out.
According to police, patrol officers were in the Soi Wanit 2 area on 23 July when members of the public asked for help, reporting that a bag had been snatched from the Italian visitor.
Officers arrived and, with assistance from bystanders, detained the alleged offender and recovered the tourist's bag. Police said Prawit admitted taking the black Chanel handbag before running into Soi Wanit 2.
He reportedly told officers he acted because he had no money and no job.
A practical reminder for visitors
Talat Noi is a historic riverside neighbourhood close to Bangkok's Chinatown, with narrow lanes that are popular with visitors. This case does not establish a wider safety trend, but it is a reminder for tourists and foreign residents to keep handbags and valuables close when walking in crowded streets or lanes.
Travellers carrying high-value items may also wish to keep proof of ownership, receipts or insurance details accessible separately, which can help when reporting a theft or making an insurance claim.
In this case, the quick response by local residents and police meant the bag was recovered immediately, according to the police account.
