Brit, 32, dies in Thailand days before wedding after crash

British man Kyle Campbell, 32, has died in Thailand days before he was due to marry his fiancee, Kannika Masasai, his family said.

The plumber from Westhoughton, Bolton, died in his sleep in the early hours of July 30 after being involved in a motorbike crash, on a holiday island, that left him with a head injury. He had travelled to Thailand to marry Kannika, his partner of two-and-a-half years. The family said he had travelled often to meet Kannika during that time.

Family raise concerns over treatment

Mr Campbell was taken to hospital after the crash, where relatives said he received treatment before being discharged only hours after the collision.

His family say doctors gave him the all-clear but advised that he return the following day so he could travel to the mainland for further treatment. The family were informed of his death in the early hours of July 30.

Relatives have described the standard of medical care he received as "inadequate". In a statement on a JustGiving fundraising page, Mr Campbell's cousin, Dianne Fisher, said the family had since been told his care was inadequate and that he later died as a result of his injuries. The family gave no further details of where the crash occurred or the hospital involved.

"His death has devastated everyone who knew and loved him," she wrote.

Kannika, who has been left grieving alongside Mr Campbell's 12-year-old son, paid tribute to her fiance.

"Death takes away the body but love remains, rest in peace my love, and you will always be in my heart," she said.

"I will keep you in my best memories forever my love."

Repatriation costs and travel concerns

The family has launched a JustGiving appeal with a GBP10,000 target, which was quickly reached, to help meet the cost of returning Mr Campbell's body to the UK, his funeral and other unexpected expenses.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Thailand."

A pretty hopeless case most likely. The hospital or clinic isn't mentioned because of libel chill.

OP says: Mr Campbell was taken to hospital after the crash,

So was there only one hospital on the un-mentioned holiday island.

Reports are that there has as yet been no official investigation as to cause of death. So that entity who has advised the family as 'inadequate' would maybe be more in line for libel.

The pics suggest he was on Phi Phi.

There is only 1 small one small government emergency medical facility (Phi PHi Hospital).

As noted earlier, all those pics could be from a prior visit.

From OP: The family said he had travelled often to meet Kannika during that time.

Agree. But any news outlet that publishes that would also be open to charges for further spreading the libel. News outlets here are very careful because there is so little defence against the charge (eg. even if it's true, it doesn't matter - they're guilty because they've damaged the individual or hospital's reputation - though its discretionary for the judge who doesn't have to follow precedence)

NB Not here -- but there:

World News per the Sun UK

‘BROKEN HEARTS’ Brit, 32, dies in Thailand days before his wedding despite being discharged from hospital after horror motorbike crash

“Whilst in Thailand, Kyle was involved in a motorcycle accident and sustained a head injury.

“Following treatment at a local hospital, he was discharged.

According to heartbroken loved ones, the standard of medical care he received was “inadequate”.

Right, well maybe the Sun were just lifting the story from a Thai publication, and so didn't have any further info?

True but apparently the family is not willing to divulge what island and what hospital and who advised "inadequate" even to an ex-Thailand under UK laws newspaper who could not be held for libel.

If this family is really out to make a stink, it would seem that they would file a criminal complaint for negligence rather some kind of civil action.

I understand. But is the Sun the first place the story appeared, or was it published here, and the Sun just copied it without speaking to the person? If the Sun did speak to the individual, if it was a Thai (like a lawyer etc.) he or she might have asked the Sun not to publish those details because even though it was a UK paper, the hospital, the doctor, etc., could still take action in Thailand (if they knew who leaked it).

To the above: They have not divulged the info as above to anyone other than as you say maybe on QT to the Sun.

The inference I make to all that is that they are contemplating legal action even now before the official cause of death is released -- and they would have 3 months to file a criminal complaint official cause of death available or not.

Photo looks like Phi Phi, so I'll guess he was staying in Phuket or Kho Lanta.

Can't see why they want his body back, wouldn't ashes be sufficient?

At least he was having a good time when he died.

I assume no insurance, so the old back up, a go fund me, without details of the crash, I again assume motorcycle involved and if so the reason for no insurance, if he liked it in Thailand and leaving an intended in Thailand why the need for the body to be returned, with SM playing a large part of everyday life , why if it is the case are people still renting m/cycles especially people with no experience of riding

If that's the case (only the Sun scooped) then the source is likely to be the bride-to-be family and/or the groom's family in the UK. Yes, that would seem consistent with them already beginning to put together a legal case.

Did crowdfunding facilities exist at that time? I suspect not but if it had done exactly the same thing would have been happening despite what you were taught.

Not a chance, it's begging, I didn't do it and nor do my sons in 2026.

That was my point, the facility did not exist at the time you were referring to so, obviously, it didn't happen but, had it existed (regardless of whether you would have taken advantage of it), there's no reason to suspect that it would not have been just as common an exercise as it is now.

OK the criminal complaint would have to be filed by the deceased family since there is no official relation with the Thai fiancé.

Hmm, not so sure about that. You might be right, but he was engaged, a dowry might have been promised, or other expectations left up in the air.. There could be a case for damages.

As to any possible dowry or other damages lost to the fiancé are you suggesting she sue the deceased's family?

Any civil complaint compared to a criminal complaint for negligent death is cream puff. And damages can be negotiated as part of the criminal complaint, not that the hospital could not put up a compelling criminal defense and have the whole thing thrown out.

No sheet sherlock.

But if he was still on Phi Phi that would explain the medical attention received aye.

The money must be there,

Maybe HIS money, but not the family's money. Therefore begging now

OK, so I have been dealing with a few deaths here. About 3-4 of my friends as well as helped my wife´s friends with contacts with Embassies.

Normally, if the body is released, they have a death certificate. That´s basically what they need to access his bank account together with a signed police report. It´s just like this! As usual, the money isn´t there! Just another guy on fluffy clouds, that thought moving, marrying a woman from another country, or relocate her was free.

Wherever it is, they are being circumspect about which holiday island and the hospital and I don't think it is because they are concerned with the hospital and/or doctors suing them for libel.

And no sheet to you, Dr. Watson

At least as reported, this is a solo accident and/or the kind of accident where someone collides with a utility pole.

Per The Sun article linked above: Kyle was involved in a motorbike accident and rushed to hospital, suffering a devastating head injury.

Phi Phi Island does not have an MRI machine. The local medical facilities and the small island hospital only handle basic first aid, stabilization, and minor treatments.

Medical Capabilities on Phi Phi Island

  • No advanced imaging: There are no MRI, CT scan, or standard X-ray facilities on the island.

  • Limited care: Facilities like the local hospital or small private clinics are meant for basic consultations, minor injuries, and stabilizing patients.

To the above: There has been no public info that this occurred on Phi Phi.

However the above hospital analysis would likely apply to most any "holiday island".

Nothing about the "accident" either. Single vehicle? Hit a tree? Telephone pole? Dog ran into the road?

If the accident wasn't reported to RTP then no insurance company will pay out even if he had any?

Right he could be on Phi Phi. But for me the interest is in why are they so hush-hush about the island, the hospital, or any details of the accident.

People had different mindset back then.

We had far more pride in ourselves and what other people thought about us.

Yes, I very much miss the ' good old days ' and don't like the present one.

Even in Thailand, both my partner and me have noticed the change in attitudes amongst the young, from the lousy musical tastes to the severe lack of work ethic, so It's not just in my home country.

from the many stories I have read over the years here in Thailand, having an accident on a motorcycle and not wearing a helmet many times has resulted in head injury and brain damage. Insurance companies usually deny a claim for such action so it isn't strange at all.

Understand your point, however, have you seen the state of crash helmets in Thailand that are available on sale?

You will very rarely see a Thai go out and buy a high quality crash helmet when cheaper options are available and the same applies to the helmets supplied by shops renting bikes, it's wrong, we all know it is, but it is, what it is.

The cheapest helmet on the market, even though it scrapes through as a crash helmet for the law, will always be the favoured option.

Not necessarily a legal case, but spinning the story for the JustGiving narrative.

More likely to get donations claiming third-rate hospitals and unprofessional health care workers at fault. Makes for a much more intriguing victimhood story.

Less likely to give when possibly learning drunk/high or no insurance or no helmet.
