Brit Backpacker Hurt in Crash Faces Large Bill

A British backpacker travelling in Thailand has appealed for help after she was seriously injured in a motorbike crash and left with mounting medical bills when her travel insurance was found to be invalid.

Chloe Foster, 26, from Medway, Kent, was attending a full moon party on Koh Pha-Ngan last Friday, 1 May, when she met a 20-year-old British tourist who offered her a lift on his motorbike. Speaking from her hospital bed, Foster said the rider was travelling “pretty fast” before the bike suddenly “did a whole 360”, throwing her from the vehicle and knocking her unconscious.

Foster said she later learned the man had fled the scene after the crash, leaving her alone on the roadside until another person found her and arranged medical help. She described waking up in hospital in Thailand as one of the “scariest moments” of her life.

The backpacker suffered multiple injuries, including a broken foot, a fractured cheek and a bloodshot eye. She also said the facial injury had left half of her face “paralysed”. After the crash, Foster discovered that her travel insurance policy would not cover her treatment costs.

Although she had taken out insurance before travelling, she said the policy became invalid because she had exceeded the 31-day maximum limit allowed for a single trip under the terms and conditions. In a statement shared through a GoFundMe page set up to cover her medical expenses, Foster said: “I was left alone and unconscious on the side of the road after a hit-and-run in Thailand.”

She added: “I was a passenger on a motorbike when it crashed. The driver got up and left me there, without calling for help. I don’t remember any of it, but I know I was lying there alone, unconscious, until someone found me and thankfully got me to the hospital.”

Foster said she now faces medical costs already exceeding GBP4,000, with bills continuing to rise as further treatment is required. She said she felt “scared, vulnerable and honestly a bit lost” while recovering alone far from home.

The incident has also prompted Foster to warn other travellers to carefully check the terms of their insurance policies before travelling abroad. She urged holidaymakers to read the “fine print” closely and to be cautious about accepting rides from people they do not know, especially if alcohol may be involved.

The Daily Mall reported the case highlights the financial risks travellers can face overseas when insurance policies contain restrictions linked to trip length or activities such as riding on motorbikes. Authorities have not released further details about the crash or whether any investigation is under way into the actions of the rider who allegedly left the scene.

I've been here ages and always used private hospitals, I'd love to know the procedure/protocol how to use a government hospital in Chiang mai for example...........

As far as I remember ,this was many years ago , had a yellow book , as Thaksin had made

a law saying Farangs too could be covered under the free @ the time hospital treatment,

I was getting this for a few months ,then he ran away to Dubai , and new government

changed the law again ,stopping free treatment as they were abusing it, now its 30 Baht

for Thais, I still go to the government hospital ,lot cheaper than private hospital ,and

they don't try to push you into getting all kinds of procedures ,

The hospital I go to is at SanSai ,huge hospital now just opened up another big building.

I am the only Farang there when I go. a few months ago had a nasty accident ,falling off

a ladder and hitting my head on a wall , got a friend to drive me there ,and was wheeled

straight in ,cleaned up had MRI because it was my head ,and had 14 stitches ,looked after

wonderfly,

regards worgeordie Maybe I should have done a gofund me page 😊

I did, so?

Any number of people try to cheat insurance companies, do you believe otherwise?

I have never been cheated by an insurance company and have filed countless claims. I few had to be resubmitted with clarification, but they were ultimately paid.

What company cheated you out of your significant tsunami claim, and what reason did they give to not pay you?

Incidentally, of the 300,000 people that died, how many was the insurance company able to bring back to life?

It was which ever insurance company Trailfinders used at the time.

You need to bear on mind myself, wife and two kids lots everything except the clothes we were wearing. As luck would have it we left the beach about 30 minutes before the tsunami struck. I at least had my passport, some cash and bank cards. so this was claim for everything. The insurance company nit picked over what I claimed for, which to be honest was a bit of a guess. I mean I didn't actually know how many pairs of underpants I had, I guessed for example.

The laugh was on them, when I sat down with the wife and listed every single the thing the claim was 3 times bigger than the original claim. They actually paid out 3 times as much had they accepted the original claim.

"Incidentally, of the 300,000 people that died, how many was the insurance company able to bring back to life?" What has that highly offensive comment got to do with anything? When arguing with the stuck up manageress at the insurance company she was complaining about all the OT she was having to do. A win win then, I assume she was getting paid OT. 300,000 people died and she was complaining about working overtime. That was my point. Every single one of the people making a claim had paid for travel cover had paid a premium and she was complaining about having to deal with the claims. Typical tight fisted, bloody minded, cheating, money grabbing, scum bag insurance company.

I did tell the stuck up b***h that she she consider the company lucky that they didn't have to pay for four hospitalisations or four repatriations.

You really need me to tell you the reason they don't have yellow plates is because they're illegal...unlicensed and uninsured for public transport?

I thought you'd know, thanks. Do you know where the licensed, insured and legal ones are? The ones where the unsuspecting foreigner's accident insurance won't be nullified?

What poor understanding you have. I said the revised claim was for three times the original claim, not what they paid me. I made an initial claim made on my estimates not giving much thought to it. That claim was for £1000. The company bitched and whinged and refused to pay up. I then spent some time sitting down with the wife producing a detailed list. Added such things as two kids passports, her passport, getting the UK ILR added, her jewellery, wedding ring etc (that was one of the things that I could produce a receipt for), a full costed list of what was lost. That came to £3000 ie £1000x3=£3000. The company took off an allowance for wear and tear, cant remember if it was a half or a third. Did they try to cheat me, yes they did. It was only after several months of arguments and my perseverance did the cheaters finally pay me what I was owed. The whole experience was extremely unpleasant. Would have been even more so if I had to fight the cheaters over hospital costs. The whole experience was very stressful made worse buy the cheating insurance scum bags.

Ah, so the evil insurance company tried to cheat you, but you were too smart for them.

It's terrible they way they actually make you fill out the forms...

Who said smart. They could have simply paid out on my first claim. It was the insurance company that wanted infinite detail forcing me to list every single item. Every sock, every handkerchief etc etc. I would have been more than happy to settle on the initial claim. It was their cussedness, their intransigence so more fool them. Certainly not me being smart, just giving them what they demanded.

I had no issue what so ever with making the initial claim. They were the ones complaining about the over time. You keep going though.

No they did not pay the claim that I submitted. Do you not understand English. Many months later after a blistering row the bl00dy minded insurance company did finally approve a resubmitted claim. If you think 8 or 9 months after the loss, being bl00dy minded to the nth degree is a good way to business then I am glad to say in am not dealing with anything that you are involved in. Was the premium correctly paid, yes. Did I suffer loss, yes there was a ****ing great tidal wave. Were they awkward, prevaricate, argue, be rude and insulting, unnecessarily delay the claim, yes. Well if that is the way you think a business deals with its customers then say more about you than me. In hind site I wish I had taken them to the Insurance Regulator. Just goes to show. Most of us pay the premiums in the expectation that we will be looked after hassle free. In actual fact dealing with insurance companies is an extremely unpleasant experience.

You said they refused the original claim, and made you fill out additional forms that tripled the value of the claim, and ultimately paid the portion of it they are responsible for. Is that not what you said, or did I miss something?

And all that grief for a thousand quid?

Not what I said, read it again. But don't be surprised if I don't bother responding. Since to love travel insurance companies so much let us all know what wonderful experiences you have had.
