A 36-year-old man returned from an errand to find his wooden home in Saraphi district, Chiang Mai, reduced to ashes after a fire on the morning of 27 September.
The blaze at house number 52/1 in Moo 7, Ban Ku Daeng, Nong Faek subdistrict, may have started after a mobile phone charger was left plugged in, according to initial information obtained by Saraphi police. The cause has not been formally confirmed.
Firefighters prevent spread to nearby homes
Nong Faek Subdistrict Municipality's disaster prevention and mitigation team sent one fire engine to the property after receiving the report.
Firefighters found the single-storey house already burning fiercely. As the building was constructed mostly of wood, the structure provided ample fuel for the flames.
Crews took around 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring homes.
The owner, identified as Mr Arm, returned while the incident was unfolding after going out on business. He was said to be deeply shocked to find that the house and all of his belongings had been destroyed, leaving only ash.
Charger left connected after owner went out
In initial questioning, Mr Arm told Saraphi police that he had slept in the house the previous night with a fan running throughout the night.
After waking, he unplugged the fan before leaving the house, but left his mobile phone charger connected to the mains. He later returned to discover the entire home had been damaged by the fire.
Local assistance planned
Anchanlee Saidech, the village head of Moo 7, Ban Ku Daeng, said immediate help would be arranged for Mr Arm as a disaster victim.
She said the case would also be reported to Nong Faek Subdistrict Municipality for consideration of further relief under official regulations.
