A suspected drink-driving crash in Phuket has left two people dead and two others injured after a jeep truck struck four motorcycles in Thalang district, according to police.
The fatal collision happened at about 7.30pm on Saturday 25 July 2026, on the access road to Ton Sai Waterfall in tambon Thepkasattri. Police identified the driver as 42-year-old Myanmar national Aung Min Oo, who was arrested at the scene after hitting several motorcycles with his black Suzuki Jeep.
Chain of collisions ends in tragedy
Police said the jeep was leaving the waterfall when it first collided with a motorcycle ridden by 24-year-old Thanawit Inkaeo, who was travelling towards the attraction.
Investigators said the driver then attempted to flee, covering only around 100 metres before crashing into three more Honda motorcycles that had stopped outside a shop in the centre of Thalang district.
The four motorcycles involved were being ridden by three men and one woman, aged between 24 and 60. Police photographs from the scene showed the Suzuki jeep fitted with a reinforced front bumper.
Thanawit and a 45-year-old woman identified as Mariem later died from their injuries at Thalang Hospital. Police said they were pronounced dead at 9.40pm on Saturday.
Two other riders, identified only as Niran, 36, and Khanit, 60, were injured in the crash.
Driver arrested after alcohol test
Officers who responded to the scene said the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
A blood test reportedly recorded an alcohol level of 239mcg/100ml, well above Thailand’s legal driving limit of under 50mcg/100ml, according to police.
The suspect was taken into custody as investigators continued their investigation into the fatal crash.
