Foreign Tourist Held Over Visa Overstay in Phuket

A male foreign tourist has been arrested in Cherng Talay, Phuket, after police checking a complaint about loud music at a hotel found he had overstayed his permitted stay in Thailand.

The man was taken into custody and transferred to investigators for legal proceedings under Thai law. Police did not disclose his name, age or nationality.

Police called over loud music complaint

Authorities were called after receiving a report that a group of tourists had been playing loud music in a hotel's common area, disturbing other guests.

Officers went to the hotel and asked the individuals to show their passports. The tourists were unable to produce the original documents, instead showing digital images.

Police checked the passport numbers against immigration records. The check found that one member of the group had remained in Thailand after his permission to stay had expired.

Overstay charge follows immigration check

The tourist was charged with being a foreign national residing in the Kingdom after permission had expired, commonly described as an overstay offence.

He was then handed to investigators for further action in accordance with Thai law.

The case began as a hotel disturbance report rather than an immigration operation, but it shows how contact with police can lead to a check of a visitor's immigration status.
