Lumpini Hawker Centre Debuts in Bangkok

Bangkok's new Lumpini Hawker Centre, located on Ratchadamri Road, offers downtown food vendors legitimate business space for the first time, marking a shift in the city's management of its famed street food culture. The centre, which launched on April 10, accommodates 88 vendors per shift in eco-friendly stalls and operates from 5 am to midnight, aiming to improve walkability and accessibility.

The hawker centre is inspired by Singapore's model and features modern amenities like centralised dishwashing and waste separation zones. With rental fees set at 60 baht per day, vendors can maintain affordable pricing. Customer response has been positive, despite a slight price increase of 5 to 10 baht at popular stalls.

Vendors express relief over the improved stability and lower unexpected costs. A beverage stall owner noted the new system instills discipline among vendors, with plans to not renew contracts for those violating rules. The initiative is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's broader urban planning efforts aimed at enhancing sidewalks and city infrastructure.

So like the open air flea market around Nana, Bangkok, they will openly be selling electronic cigarettes, sex toys and other band weaponry and chinese crap ?

The point of street food is that it's located where you need it on a work break or where you conduct business. A food vendor who makes people sick won't be a food vendor for long, so any sideways references to hygiene are for manipulative purposes. My guess is that this is about taxation, regulation, and elimination of competition for overpriced corporate options who can't compete due to high overhead.

Singapore has spent billions of dollars and has been working on the hawker centers since the 1960s...Singapore now has hundreds of hawker centers..

Bangkok is twice the size of Singapore and Bangkok has ONE hawker center...

Bangkok has ZERO chance of replicating the Singapore food hawker model..Not in our life time.. 100% ZERO chance...

Its very very expensive to buy land in Bangkok for hawker centers now.....The Cheap land in the 1960s is long gone.....

So street food and food carts on streets is here to stay in Bangkok for a very long time... you can take this to the bank....

Is this located on Rajadamri outside Lumpini? Pretty far for Silom office workers but Chula Hospital across the street has 4,000 employees and thousands of patients every day. Hope this venture has great success...if the food's good!
